My 3 year old child doesn't understand the stigma surrounding a toffee penny.

She's eaten them all. Bad parenting on my part, I left the room while she was watching something and I forgot the tin was on the table.

She's left all the good stuff and now we have no idea what will be the last sweetie remaining.

My money is on the plain block in the green wrapper.

I've scrubbed her teeth. Bed time was hell, I've learnt my lesson. I don't need a flaming today.

I dont know what is going on with Quality Streets this year, they must have changed their chocolate recipe. Its absolutely revolting now, really waxy somehow.

They are now in the possession of an American company - possibly Hershey's. American chocolate is 99.9999997% palm oil, or possibly corn syrup. Something that renders fine chocolate dining an impossibility, anyhow.

Roses went the same foul-tasting road a few years ago. I used to love both Roses and Quality Street, but now I wouldn't give them house room

They are shite.

OkayGo · 10/01/2020 13:23

Toffee pennies hurt my teeth so I don’t eat them. But if anyone touches the caramels I’ll slap their hands away.

Zaphodsotherhead · 10/01/2020 13:30

I would just like to announce....

that I like the coffee one, and the coconut one.

Hahaha - snap schadenfreude!

Dh says he only married me because I don't like red or black wine gums....

FreakStar · 10/01/2020 13:38

@SchadenfreudePersonified Nestle own and manufacture Quality Street- Not an American Company. Quality Street are made in Halifax in the old Mackintosh's/Rowntree factory where they have always been made. No doubt the chocolate is made to a cheaper recipe these days, but they certainly aren't owned by Hershey's.

lotusbell · 10/01/2020 13:39

Fudge please!

FreakStar · 10/01/2020 13:45

Fudge for me too!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 10/01/2020 13:47

Freakstar

WHAT!!!???

I am ashamed to be British . . .

inwood · 10/01/2020 13:48

Urgh. Haven't had quality street for years. The palm oil rendered them inedible.

Before that, the green triangle was my absolute fave.

Gingernaut · 10/01/2020 13:49

There's a Swapsies Market for these tins of sweets...

FreakStar · 10/01/2020 13:52

Some branches of John lewis were doing custom-filled tins at Christmas where you could just fill it with your faves! Wish I could have done that- mine would have been all fudge and purple ones!

Drabarni · 10/01/2020 13:55

Ooh, I like the orange and strawberry creams. Used to like the gooseberry years ago too.
I think I was the only one who liked the cracknell in the red cellophane.

CoolcoolcoolcoolcoolNoDoubt · 10/01/2020 13:56

This is appalling. I had an orange creme the other day that I actually had to spit out, it tasted so badly of chemicals.. leave the toffee penny alone Sad

Nonnymum · 10/01/2020 14:00

Onewardsup The purple ones are the best! A hazelnut and soft caramel.
Think I agree about the toffee penny, it was always last to be eaten on our house . Also not fond of the dark chocolate one.

Ticklemeelmo · 10/01/2020 14:04

Toffee pennies are horrible, can't stand how they stick to your teeth 😖

The best ones are orange and strawberry creams, and the blue coconut.

PuppyMonkey · 10/01/2020 14:06

£12 a pop for those custom tins. Shock

CatInTheDaytime · 10/01/2020 14:14

This year John Lewis were doing Pick & Mix Quality street. Me & DC were so excited! For reasons I can't fathom :o you couldn't pick them out yourself - instead a staff member had to come round with a shovel following your instructions.

CatInTheDaytime · 10/01/2020 14:16

Oops just seen someone already pointed this out. Yes they were £12 but that was for a lot more than a normal tin/plastic box. The tin was stuffed to the brim - plus of course you don't waste the ones no one likes.

Lovemusic33 · 10/01/2020 14:19

Did she put the empty wrappers back in the tin?

Green triangles are the best, coconut ones are the worst (not sure why as I love bounty but the quality street ones are horrid and dry).

Did she suck them or chew them? Not sure if I could chew them anymore 🤣

SoupDragon · 10/01/2020 14:22

THE CRACKNELL IS THE WORST!!!!!

Yes! I mean WTF is it anyway??

GlendaSugarbeanIsJudgingYou · 10/01/2020 14:25

Has no one mentioned the orange crunch yet?

Heathens.

They are the best!

GlendaSugarbeanIsJudgingYou · 10/01/2020 14:31

Codswallop.

It still breaks my heart that the peanut Cracknell in its pretty blue wrapper no longer exists.

Drabarni · 10/01/2020 14:34

It was red when I used to eat them, maybe 60's / 70's.
I didn't even know it was peanut, I didn't like peanuts. It was just so lovely. Not my favourite, but one of them.

ChocolateTeapots1 · 10/01/2020 14:35

Anything dark chocolate and said toffee penny still sat in the bag from Christmas as I write this. I don’t mind a green triangle. Quite like the new blue one, though it’s no purple!

Jins · 10/01/2020 14:41

We’ve had three boxes this year and the only ones to be eaten are the toffee pennies and toffee fingers. I’ve had a few fudge ones but the rest have been bagged up to be given away.
