How many coat hooks do you have in your hall

Quite likely the most boring mumsnet thread ever.

Moving on.... how many coat hooks do you have in your hall? And how many people in your family? Do guests have space to hang coats? If not, where do their coats go?

Thank you!

15 I think. Only two of us. Guests can hang coats on top of ours, although the hooks are quite full...

damnthatanxiety · 09/01/2020 06:52

About 18. All loaded up. Remember the days when everyone had one coat

EnglishRain · 09/01/2020 06:52

I should probably say that we have a reasonably sized porch. Coats include a serious outdoor coat each, a shower proof coat, DH has a fashionable coat, and I have a trench coat, a work coat, a fashionable big coat and a fashionable shorter coat. I then have about 6 scarves and we have a basket full of hats and gloves 😬

Chasingsquirrels · 09/01/2020 06:52

Cupboard understairs starts at full height and has a rail & hangers, plus 3 double hooks at adult height and 2 double hooks at child height.
Mainly my coats in there now, plus 1 or 2 of the kids - their coats are mainly in their rooms.

4 hook over the door thing on outside of downstairs loo door next to entrance used by visitors, or they go the the end of the banister rail opposite.

1 adult, 2 teens.

OneKeyAtATime · 09/01/2020 06:53
  1. Not enough
emmathedilemma · 09/01/2020 06:56

4 for 1 person and my "big coat" usually lives on the end of the stairs bannister because it's so bulky.

lovemenorca · 09/01/2020 06:59

This is brilliant intel - thank you!

Do you put coats away in summer?

One adult and two children here. It’s a toss up between an 8 or a 12 coat hook. Wondering if 12 overkill. Useful for guests, but really... not like I have guests every weekend or anything.

  1. For three of us. All full up. We have lots of coats each. We're very outdoorsy and tend to walk everywhere. Not really any space for guests. I have to move ours if people come over.
ExpletiveDelighted · 09/01/2020 07:11

16 and all are in use. 4 high ones for adult coats, 4 below them under the dado rail for bags (dance kit, stuff for recycling etc). 8 low ones further along for DCs coats, hoodies, more school/hobby related bags.

IlsSortLaPlupartAuNuitMostly · 09/01/2020 07:12

Trust us, 12 is not overkill

Chasingsquirrels · 09/01/2020 07:13

Well how many coats do you each have? How many of these are used regularly and are any infrequent and could go elsewhere (and do you have space elsewhere).
I'd go for the bigger one.

cptartapp · 09/01/2020 07:19

Four in the utility room. For four of us. Each have two or three coats on each so it's very full, but out of sight behind a door.
Coats are rotated depending on the season. The rest are in our wardrobes.

CaviarAndCigarettes · 09/01/2020 07:22

We only have five and there are five of us. That being said, I always struggle to find coat space and regularly have to organise it.
One hook for kids play coats, one hook for their best coats, one hook for rain coats. I have a hook for my winter and lighter coat. Dh has a hook for his two coats
When winter is over the winter coats and play coats go in the wardrobes and that hook gets used for hoodies/body warmers.

ConfidingFish · 09/01/2020 07:25

We don't have room in the hall for a coat rack so we use wardrobes that are in the children's playroom which is immediately off the hall. Dh and I have a double wardrobe between us and the children (2) have a double wardrobe. It is a huge playroom with a vast amount of storage.

Any guest coats are hung up on hangers in there. Definitely get a 12 hook.

FourTeaFallOut · 09/01/2020 07:25

We have the smallest doorway in the world so we have 8 by the front door and 4 at the back. The eight at the front are two rows of four, the top are very high and for the adults and the bottom ones for the kids where it's easier to reach.

Cornishmumofone · 09/01/2020 07:26

We have a rail that is just over a metre long (maybe 115cm). It's stuffed for and there are only two adults and a small child in the house.

silenceofthemams · 09/01/2020 07:29

I got rid of the coat hooks and the cost stand and repurposed a wardrobe from my bedroom when I redecorated.

Much prefer it, rail adds more storage, don't have to pack away seasonal coats, plenty of room for guest coats, no dusty shoulders on the ones we occasionally use and it looks sooooo much tidier.

SallyLovesCheese · 09/01/2020 07:31

Oh my god, we're have 3! For two adults, one baby! But I do keep seasonal coats in the loft when we're not using them.

Guacamole · 09/01/2020 07:38

None. I hate to see them, I don’t like clutter and find them messy. Instead the hooks are
In the cupboard under our stairs. 3 of us in our family and my DH seems to own a ridiculous number of coats.

okiedokieme · 09/01/2020 07:42

25+, always full of goodness knows what, must cull!

TheMemoryLingers · 09/01/2020 07:47

They're in the downstairs loo rather than the hall and there are 4. I recently took everything off them except the coats in current use and it was very refreshing!

Lucky44 · 09/01/2020 08:29

None. Coats either go on back of kitchen chair or over bannister before being taken upstairs and hung up in wardrobes. Don’t have many visitors and hate that cluttered look of piles of coats that never get worn because no one (teenagers) can be bothered moving them to get to the ones underneath. Or ending up with a pile of coats on the floor.

TeenPlusTwenties · 09/01/2020 08:33

8 double ones going up the side of the stairs. 4 people in family.
Also have an under stairs cupboard where out of season / not in regular use go.

Visitors use one of the less used pegs or the finial on the bannister.

katzenellenbogen · 09/01/2020 08:37

None. We don't have a hallway.

Ofitck · 09/01/2020 08:38

We have a small cupboard (about 80cm) with a rail and coat hangers for adult coats and 4 hooks at child level for kids coats and school bags and they are all burst off
