Apologies to those who don't know some of these songs. I'm showing my age somewhat!

All By Myself - Johnny Burnette

Moonmelodies · 08/01/2020 19:58

Love Hurts - Everly Brothers

Pipandmum · 08/01/2020 19:58

@Alexakimbo google it it's one of the greatest love songs ever - written by George Harrison about his then wife Pattie Boyd (Layla and Wonderful Tonight by Eric Clapton are also about her).
The originals are usually the best for all those songs.

Lollypalooza · 08/01/2020 20:01

Moonmelodies Came on to say Everly Brothers for Love Hurts too!

AlexaKimbo · 08/01/2020 20:03

@Pipandmum I have Apple Music so will download the ones I haven’t heard. Might find some new favourites.

MovingBriskyOn · 08/01/2020 20:03

Jim Capaldi
Roy Orbison
UB40
With Marc Almond
Celine Dion
The Beatles
UB40
Shirley Bassey

WildRosie · 08/01/2020 20:13

Generally speaking, I find that the first version of a song I hear is the one I like the most, regardless of whether or not it's the original. Having said that, I first heard 'Mandy' by Barry Manilow back in 1975 when it was first a hit. The original song is called 'Brandy', recorded by Scott English which I didn't hear until nearly thirty years later. I prefer it!

MovingBriskyOn · 08/01/2020 20:15

Thank you WildRosie. Now you can play too

With a little help from my friends by the beatles, wet wet wet or joe cocker?

Dear prudence by the beatles or siouxsie?

Live and let die by wings or guns and roses?

Rocket man by Elton john or kate Bush?

I may think of more, possibly less beatle-related

MovingBriskyOn · 08/01/2020 20:19

Its raining men by the weather girls or geri halliwell?

Comfortably numb by pink floyd or the scissor sisters?

Only love can break your heart by Neil young or st etienne?

feelingverylazytoday · 08/01/2020 20:23

Will only do the songs that I like

Crying - Roy Orbison
Somethings gotten hold of my heart - Gene Pitney/Marc Almond
Red red wine - Neil Diamond
Something - Shirley Bassey (probably my favourite cover song by any artist).

Justanotherlurker · 08/01/2020 20:24

Generally speaking, I find that the first version of a song I hear is the one I like the most

That's the case in most instances as music does generally have a connection to the time you originally liked the song.

It's why in 40 years or so some people are going to cite Mcfly covers as being the best

partyline · 08/01/2020 20:26

Of the only two I can tolerate I'd go for Sonny and Cher and with Marc Almond.

Badbilly · 08/01/2020 20:40

The originals are usually the best for all those songs.

Two of those songs aren’t the originals - Love Hurts was originally done by an obscure (to me anyway) country artist called Bordeaux Bryant ( not 100% sure about his first name) , and Something’s got a hold of my Heart was written and originally a hit for David & Jonathan (who were in reality Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway) .

I am always amazed ( and use it as a trivia question) how many people don’t know that Neil Diamond wrote Red Red Wine - including UB40, who originally gave the royalties to a Jamaican Reggae singer Tony Tribe who also covered the song. He ( Neil Diamond) also wrote I’m a Believer (by the Monkees ).

WildRosie · 08/01/2020 20:49

Moving:

Beatles, Siouxsie, Wings, Elton John, Weather Girls, Pink Floyd. I admit I don't know Only Love Can Break Your Heart.

That reminds me, It's Only Love was originally written and recorded by The Beatles but Gary U.S. Bonds did a splendid cover in about 1981.
