I think maybe you have an affinity for whatever you grew up with?

Hurt - Johnny Cash or Nine inch nails?
I drove all night - Roy Orbison or Cyndi Lauper?
Say hello, wave goodbye - David Gray or Soft Cell?
Venus - Shocking Blue or Bananarama?
Spirit in the sky - Norman Greenbaum or Dr and the Medics?
The man who sold the world - Nirvana or Bowie?

D'oh! yes I did know Love Hurts and Something. I just don't particularly like either (I know, heresy, but you like what you like...)

MinesaPinot · 09/01/2020 14:18

Love Hurts Jim Capaldi or Nazareth - Jim Capaldi

Crying Roy Orbison or Don McLean - Roy Orbison

I Got You Babe Sonny and Cher or UB40 and Chrissie Hynde - I like both - does that count?

Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart Gene Pitney- solo or with Marc Almond - with Marc Almond (who can do no wrong in my book)

All By Myself Eric Carmen or Celine Dion - Can't stand either!

Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds The Beatles or Elton John - The Beatles

Red, Red Wine Neil Diamond or UB40 - UB40

Something The Beatles or Shirley Bassey - The Beatles

I also prefer Franz Ferdinand's version of 'Sound and Vision' rather than David Bowie - DH will now disown me

Clawdy · 09/01/2020 14:26

All the first ones. Though I do like UB40's Red Red Wine too. And couldn't agree more with Judas - Roy's version of Love Hurts beats anyone else's.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 09/01/2020 18:24

Actually, not meaning to dis Lefty Wilbury, but I probably have to confess to preferring the K D Lang and Roy Orbison version of Crying rather than his solo.

Crying Don McLean

Judas nooooo.......Shock

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 09/01/2020 19:55

Clawdy sorry, but he is still on it.....it’s not just her.....can you ever forgive me? PS do you share my Marc Almond love too? 😀

Clawdy · 09/01/2020 22:41

I like their version, but I love his! Lovely to see KD sing it in concert though, she always raises her hand and looks upwards with a smile at the end as a homage to Roy! Marc Almond....think I'm a bit old for that one! Grin

FeistyOneIAm · 09/01/2020 23:35

Surely the best version of Crying is Raquel and Tony Angelino

Some very tough decisions in that selection. I’d have to go for Cash, but that’s purely because I’ve had little exposure to NIN.

Cyndi Lauper purely because I think in this particular song she edges it slightly, although I was really disappointed she didn’t become much bigger, she is very talented.

Soft Cell. That was the easiest one in this selection for me.

Spirit in the Sky is a very tough one- both versions are good for different reasons - I’d have this one as a draw ( is that allowed?).

Bowie - again a close call, but he edges it slightly- possibly just due to my age. There have been some truly awful Bowie covers (Lulu springs to mind) but this one is very good.

feelingverylazytoday · 11/01/2020 18:18

Hurt - NIN with David Bowie (live performance)
I drove all night - Roy Orbison, though Cyndi is fantastic too
Say hello, wave goodbye - Soft cell, of course
Venus - Shocking blue way
Spirit in the sky - don't like.
The man who sold the world - Nirvana. Badbilly I really like Lulu's version, though it has Bowie and Ronson all over it any way.

Jog22 · 11/01/2020 18:50

William Shatner for Lucy in the sky with diamonds.

CarpeSocolatum · 11/01/2020 18:51

Today I learnt that Lulu had a fling with Bowie.
I usually just hear Bloody Lulu when I see her name Glitterball Brendan went through the mill with her.
But I recently watched John Barrowman and Simon Amstell's gay off so now I just think of Robin Ince in the guess the into round pretending to be irate: ''What would Barrowman know? Lulu. It's Lulu then!!!'' Grin

Clawdy · 11/01/2020 23:05

She only revealed the fling after he died, though, so I think I'd take that with a pinch of salt......

Who, Lulu? No, she's been talking about it for years. I think he might have even confirmed it.

Badbilly · 12/01/2020 11:16

No, she mentions it in her 2002 autobiography, albeit briefly. David Bowie didn’t die until 2016.
