Hangover

Hi,

Does anyone else get horrific hangovers? And if you don't do you have any tips or is it just luck?

I am not a regular big drinker, I might have 1 or 2 glasses of wine across a weekend if I'm just at home.

However, I do like a drink when out with friends and enjoy a good night out maybe 4 times a year. On Saturday, I went for dinner, shared a bottle of wine with a friend, then ate and we had another 3 bottles over dinner between 3 of us . All had a great night, and I probably ended up consuming 1.5 bottles of white wine over the evening by midnight (started around 7) I was definitely merry, but perfectly fine walking home, had a conversation with DH who said I was obviously a bit drunk but not wrecked and having a normal chat. I drank water before bed.

Anyway, woke the next morning horrifically ill. I was vomiting frequently until 2pm and couldn't keep anything down. Total write off and just had to lie in bed. It just feels so unfair that the occasional cracking night out is ruined! I could cope with a groggy head but this was awful and puts me off risking even a couple of drinks next time.

I do get migraine so wondered if this might be why my hangovers are so bad? 1 of the friends was completely fine, the other had a headache and was tired but managed to get through the day. We all drank pretty much the same and no mixing or shots or anything.

Anyone else like this?

I do and it's due to not drinking often enough!! I am just not used to poisoning my body so my New Years resolution should be to drink more but I can't be bothered 😕

Nomorerainplease · 06/01/2020 21:35

Yep me. Although I get it after 2- 2.5 glasses of wine. I’m the next day is a right off. I have totally lost my tolerance and didn’t used to be like this. I am also sober after 2 glasses but still have a cracking hangover. I daren’t get drunk!
V annoying

Hangoverstruggles · 06/01/2020 21:37

That's probably my issue as I drink very little week to week. Sucks as I love an occasional booze up but not if it's going to cost me the entire next day feeling like utter shit.

I'm sure as we get older we can no longer process alcohol. It is one of the reasons I gave it up completely.

Thestrangestthing · 06/01/2020 21:42

Me too. I onky drink on a night out or night in with friends, so at the most 8 times a year. Used to be a lot more, but I just can't face the hangovers now.
Alkazeltser, full fat coke, Lucozade sport, Andrews salts, salty food and lots of water help. I generally have to spend the whole day in bed so can onky drink if my dp will be home the next day for the kids. Luckily alcohol doesn't seem to affect him the next day.

NannaNoodleman · 06/01/2020 21:45

Definitely red coke... proper red coke, not Pepsi or supermarket brands.

  • Paracetamol, an orange, and water.
OhMeows · 06/01/2020 21:52

This was me last week. Puked about 10 times, couldn't even hold down water.

10 years ago I could drink double that, stay up til 4am and be at work at 9am feeling a bit groggy but fine, and then do it all again the next night. Now the next day is a complete write off.

Janaih · 06/01/2020 21:57

Yep me too. Wine makes it worse. Try drinking vodka when you're out.

When you get in, drink as many pints of water as you can, and when you wake up for a wee take an antihistamine tablet.
Then later on the usual bacon sandwich/paracetamol/coke or tea/ whatever makes you feel better

TheZeppo · 06/01/2020 22:02

It’s taken me many, many years to realise my tipping point into vomit is one and s half bottles! The half was your mistake 🤣

Janaih · 06/01/2020 22:03

@TheZeppo wise words

Hangoverstruggles · 06/01/2020 22:26

God it's all depressing Grin I'm my 20s I could drink way more and would have been mixing. And it's the extra half bottle that's the most fun!

hippyfuckinghooray · 06/01/2020 22:36

@janaih what would an anti histamine do to help a hangover?

Ledkr · 06/01/2020 22:40

Yes I'm the same.
Much worse with wine though. I can drink a lot of vodka and be ok. Try that.

happinessischocolate · 06/01/2020 22:44

Stop drinking wine

Wine makes me vomit the next day, and feel rough all day even if I only have a couple.

I now drink vodka with soda or coke and just feel slightly jaded till 10am and then fine.

Biancadelrioisback · 06/01/2020 22:49

Ice cold shower. Works every time. Sometimes I have to force myself to do it, I've even asked DH to shower me when I've been bad, but I need that shower to cope

PrincessHoneysuckle · 06/01/2020 22:52

Soluble vit c before you drink,a takeaway or carby food then a rehydration sachet with plenty of water and another vit c the next morning

Janaih · 06/01/2020 22:53

@hippyfuckinghooray sulphites in wine make you feel worse. You may be allergic or intolerant or just sensitive to them.

WeeM · 06/01/2020 22:55

Wow that’s not good! I definitely think drinking water as you go helps if you can remember. Also try a milk thistle tablet before you go out and one before you go to bed. Not sure if it actually works but it’s not going to do you any harm! And in the morning I swear by a berocca and salty stodgy food.

mildlymiffed · 06/01/2020 22:56

Nothing here helps, just sitting it out, and waiting for bedtime and having a decent night's sleep. So much so that I have one glass max now, and that's it! Gaaahh! I feel sick with a hangover, dizzy, headache, the full works! And it strikes after 3 glasses of wine- either colour!

Makes me feel like an old biddy. But I hear with people in their twenties and below that it's bang on trend now to not drink- so maybe I'm just down with the kids (can't believe I just typed that! How old am I?!!!)

happycamper11 · 06/01/2020 23:16

Yes, a bottle of wine is my limit and even a drop over and the next day is written off. I'm not even drunk just enjoying myself. It's always been the case. No answers sorry

DrKnickerbocker · 07/01/2020 00:09

I'm the same OP Sad

I used to be able to really hold my drink, I was always the one helping people home and holding hair whilst they were throwing up.
Woke up the next day without so much as a headache.

I don't drink much anymore, have a glass of wine if I'm out for dinner with DP and the odd night at the pub for birthdays or whatever.
I'd say, roughly, 10 nights a year.
I used to drink a bottle of wine to myself on a Friday, in front of the tv - couldn't think of anything worse now!

I had a few on NYE and was absolutely wiped out NYD.
Couldn't get out of bed apart from to be sick, was dizzy, sweaty, pounding head and constant nausea.
I can't do it anymore, especially not with DC.

My only cure is a cup of beef oxo and ready salted crisps. It stops the nausea and the sweats.
Plenty of water, paracetamol, OJ and sleep (which is impossible with a 4 year old!)

zoobincan · 07/01/2020 00:12

Does anyone else get horrific hangovers?

I used to.

And if you don't do you have any tips or is it just luck?

I stopped drinking!

It's been a few years now and it's the best thing I ever did. I lost 3 days to my last night out, never again.

PickAChew · 07/01/2020 00:14

I drink often and that amount would still floor me. You drank too much, plain and simple.

PickAChew · 07/01/2020 00:16

Seriously, 1.5 bottlrs of wine is 15 units. It is a lot.

Shockers · 07/01/2020 00:16

I’ve stopped drinking too. I’m enjoying life without alcohol so far!
