Would you go wild camping on your own?

Just wondered if many women have done solo wild camping?

Me. It was great. Solitude on the top of a Scottish mountain. Lovely sunset, great night’s sleep. Shame about the fog in the morning which made navigating down a bit tricky!

SparkleBead · 06/01/2020 16:09

No.

I'd love to, but realistically I'd be too scared of being attacked with no one around to help.

FourTeaFallOut · 06/01/2020 16:13

No. I wouldn't. I don't think I'd be able to sleep feeling that isolated.

midgebabe · 06/01/2020 16:15

Have not done so but would now I have sufficient experience . Would prefer remoter location and probably single night

nibdedibble · 06/01/2020 16:16

I think I would, but I'd have to go somewhere really, really remote.
I've stayed in a shepherd's hut on my own, it gives you next to zero security but it didn't cross my mind to fear being attacked tbh.

twilightcafe · 06/01/2020 16:16

No.

Doyoumind · 06/01/2020 16:17

I love camping. I would have no problem camping alone but I don't know if I could do wild camping alone. I would feel too vulnerable.

AutumnRose1 · 06/01/2020 16:18

I would but like a pp, it would have be very remote indeed.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 06/01/2020 16:20

A night off the kids? Just me, a good book and quiet? Eating what ever I fancy that can be cooked easily? No housework?

Sign me up Grin

Realistically, no. I struggle to stay warm while camping despite multiple layers etc.

It's would depend where. I think I'd feel safer wild camping on my own than I would on a campsite on my own.

suggestionsplease1 · 06/01/2020 16:25

I have done wild camping in Scotland alone in the past during cycling trips. I enjoyed it. I had a small footprint tent and was able to get into odd, hidden places to pitch. I just looked for somewhere that was as long and wide as my body and flat! Did feel a bit twitchy at times but for a night or 2 was fine.

NorthEndGal · 06/01/2020 16:31

I would, and I have. I live in Canada, we have oodles of space to just get away from it all.
I like my own company, I grew up in the forest , and have been wild camping, swimming, ect since I was a baby.
If I go in the winter I prefer to have company, just because it is inherently more risky , but in the spring/summer/fall I love going on my own.

AutumnRose1 · 06/01/2020 16:33

North “ If I go in the winter I prefer to have company, just because it is inherently more risky”

Do you mean in terms of animals?

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 06/01/2020 16:33

God no, I'm a light sleeper with an overactive imagination Grin

NorthEndGal · 06/01/2020 16:35

No, I mean hypothermia, it can happen so quickly, especially if you are crossing ice/unknown rivers.
Plus things like falling ice chunks, slips and falls, etc, are all more likely in the winter

AutumnRose1 · 06/01/2020 16:35

North I see, thanks.

Ohyesiam · 06/01/2020 16:36

Yes, in the wilds off the Scottish highlands. I wouldn’t do it anywhere less wild.

I didn’t feel vulnerable to people, but the landscape is overwhelming and beautiful in equal measures, and I had moments of that scary feeling of being totally insignificant to the landscape, and how powerful the elements are.

ohwheniknow · 06/01/2020 16:36

Nope.

Namethecat · 06/01/2020 16:37

Tbh I don't think it's something you can ask an opinion of. It totally depends on you and what you know you can / cannot do.
I live in Cumbria on the edge of the Lake district and know lots of women who regularly do this.
They can use a map and compass , are more than capable of setting up camp , and happy to carry all their gear.
If it's something you want to do , do it !

NorthEndGal · 06/01/2020 16:38

Its helpful to have someone along who can light a fire, or call for help, if you become incapacitated

NannyR · 06/01/2020 16:40

I would like to, I'm planning some easyish camps in the lakes this summer. There is a great Facebook page - wild camping UK, where there are women who camp solo or even take their kids, there are some inspirational photos on there!

RomaineCalm · 06/01/2020 16:40

I'd love to but realistically I don't think I would.

I have camped alone on a small campsite and didn't feel at all vulnerable- there's something very. nice about being on your own, outside the tent with a cuppa just watching the world go by!
