If you have a dishwasher..

... how many times a week do you wash up in the sink? Assuming everything you own is dishwasher-safe.

Once a day at least

CigarsofthePharoahs · 06/01/2020 12:02

Very very rarely. Hate washing up. DH has a few things he'd prefer not dishwashed and my attitude to that is fine, but you wash them yourself. If they've been sat on the side for ages then they're going in the dishwasher.

Mermaidtissues · 06/01/2020 12:06

Never, odd rinse of stuff, or washing a knife as I’m using it. I don’t have a washing up bowl or drying rack

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 06/01/2020 12:10

I don't fully hand wash anything, but I've lived with four dishwashers and all of them have required things to be basically washed before going in, or they wouldn't come out clean. Have we just had shit dishwashers?

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 06/01/2020 12:45

We have a few things every day that need washing by hand, but I have no idea why it takes DH just as long to clean up in the kitchen in the evening as it did before we had a dishwasher!

@CactusAndCacti - re slimline dw

I’m re-doing the kitchen & I’m in two minds whether to get a DW or not?

I’ve had them in the past & used plenty of others and I’ve always found them crap at drying and some crap at cleaning. I also hate the smell/taste on the dishes.

But I’m equally fed up of having dishes on the side

I can only fit in a slimline not a full size but if I get one it will be the top of the range Neff slimline (partly because I want the cutlery tray at the top & the racks that fold fully flat & partly because I want one that has the best chance of actually cleaning & drying dishes)

But I can’t decide whether a slimline isn’t even worth having, but it would keep the ‘sides’ clear!

It needs to take pots & pans though because they’re the things I most hate washing, not the plates etc!!

Any thoughts/advice anyone?!

Usernamealreadyexists · 06/01/2020 13:39

Absolutely never. I do rinse everything and scrub pans first through but will never do a full wash up.

dementedpixie · 06/01/2020 13:40

Stop rinsing your dishes, it's not necessary and a waste of water. Scraping is sufficient

actiongirl1978 · 06/01/2020 13:46

Never. Ever.

Why would you? I rinse the DCs water bottles every week, but the wide mouth ones go in DW on bottom row.

The Le creuset casserole dish goes in there, all the Waterford Crystal glasses we got for our wedding, everything.

Life is too short not to, and washed up dishes always have residues on and never look totally clean.

stripeypillowcase · 06/01/2020 13:53

only when the dw is not stacked properly or dc water bottle top a small item falls through and blocked one the spray arms not everything gets clean.
otherwise it doesn't have plroblems cleaning anything.

Vanillaradio · 06/01/2020 13:57

I only wash things that are not dishwasher safe or didn't fit in the dishwasher when I put it on. So, probably once a week at the most....

SciFiScream · 06/01/2020 13:57

Wash in the sink? As little as freaking possible!

We don't buy anything new that isn't dishwasher safe.

Even items that don't state they are dishwasher safe get a test run through to see how they survive.

I do the cats bowls in there (actually that was advice because the dishwasher does a better job of rinsing the smell of cleaning material off which is horrible to cats) plus pet food is sold as fit for human consumption isn't it? In case of mix ups?

Kids water bottles go in too!

I'll let things wait until the next load if too much...unless I've been forced to hand wash something in which case I won't waste the water and will hand wash the spares too.

I even do crystal and awkward wine glasses if I can find a safe space for them.

Now that the teen is responsible for unloading the dishwasher and putting away I'd say it saves me an hour day easily.

minipie · 06/01/2020 13:57

Every day, but we have a fair few non dishwasher friendly items

  • cast iron pans
  • wine glasses
  • plastic food bags (I wash and reuse these many times)
  • wooden chopping boards
SciFiScream · 06/01/2020 14:01

Oh and I also use the dishwasher to clean things. Like the oven shelves and the dish drainer and anything that needs washed that is safe to go in the dishwasher goes in!

It's more eco friendly to use a dishwasher now plus it gets things cleaner, almost sterile.

We take good care of the dishywashy (good life reference there) so that it takes good care of us!

❤️ my dishywashy.

The integrated dishwasher in our new house blew up the week we moved in. We didn't replace it as the whole kitchen was due to be done the next year. But by then we were so used to washing up we couldn't get back into using the dishwasher on a daily basis. So we only used it on a Sunday or if we have visitors 'just to give it a run through'. That was six years ago.
Prior to that I had used a dishwasher daily for about 15 years.

NamiSwan · 06/01/2020 14:14

We have a dishwasher and do at least one load a day but still do a rack of washing up about every other day (and should be every day really as we are never on top of it).

My husband is very particular about not putting decent knives in the dishwasher, nor anything wood, nor our non stick pans. So most days we have stuff that can't go in the dishwasher and have a permanent pile of washing up that we can't keep on top of because we have two small children and both work full time and are too lazy to wash up every day.

Fluffycloudland77 · 06/01/2020 14:24

Washing up by hand saves a lot of water. Our water bill was nearly £50 a month before the dw. It’s £20 now.

BarbaraofSeville · 06/01/2020 14:28

No it doesn't. A dishwasher does a full load with about 10 litres of water, which is about half a sinkful.

There is no way that you can wash the contents of a full dishwasher in half a sink of water. There is also no way that the change from using a dishwasher to washing up by hand more than halved your water bill.

Topseyt · 06/01/2020 14:31

A dishwasher is a big saver of water if used properly. They only take water into the bottom, it isn't the whole machine that fills up. A large load is washed and rinsed in relatively little water.

Bickles · 06/01/2020 14:32

Most days but just glasses, pans etc. Everything that can go in the dishwasher does.

Fluffycloudland77 · 06/01/2020 14:52

I meant to say dw saves compared to washing up by hand & fucked it up.

Deelish75 · 06/01/2020 15:00

Just plastics - mainly our water bottles, Tupperware boxes and the salad spinner.
Everything else goes through the dishwasher, once a day a during the week, twice at the weekend.

avocadotofu · 06/01/2020 16:34

Never.

StarlightLady · 06/01/2020 17:07

Everything goes in the dishwasher except some antique glasses. Putting those in would be silly.

RusselHoward · 06/01/2020 17:09

Only posh stuff I worry about eg le creuset frying pans and saucepans and nice wine glasses
