... how many times a week do you wash up in the sink? Assuming everything you own is dishwasher-safe.

Wooden Spoons, crystal glasses, pans and oven trays. Pet dishes. Often have to rewash stuff that’s been in the dishwasher because it’s not properly clean. At least several times a day.

TwoShades1 · 05/01/2020 23:26

Everyday. But only because my dishwasher isn’t massive so saucepans take up too much room and I have good knives and some other utensils that aren’t dishwasher safe.

mags2024 · 05/01/2020 23:38

Most days because l have crystal and cooking knives which shouldn't go in the dishwasher

pigoons · 05/01/2020 23:41

I handwash items every day - plastic food storage items, water bottles, silicone straws, knives, wooden chopping boards, wine glasses - including stuff that is supposedly dishwasher safe but gets degraded /discoloured really quickly

pigoons · 05/01/2020 23:42

Oh yes, baking trays/ baking tins etc because I hand wash them immediately after use let them drain a while then pop them back in warm oven so that they dry thoroughly / don't get rusty

AlexaAmbidextra · 06/01/2020 00:09

Never. Well, not quite. If I have people round and use my beautiful, expensive wine glasses then I do them by hand. But that’s all.

AlexaAmbidextra · 06/01/2020 00:12

For the many on here who say they wash pans by hand, why?

OhWellThatsJustGreat · 06/01/2020 01:08

@BernardsarenotalwaysSaints no fucking way?!?!?! I've been exclusively pumping for the past 6 months and washed and sterilised everytime, my hv didn't tell me that, just said she was in awe that I was still going... it's only this past 2 months I've cut down from 8 to 4 times. I might go and have a cry now 😭

raspberryk · 06/01/2020 01:16

Heads up I'm not even convinced you need to sterilize bottles and pumps when they're used exclusively for breast milk, only formula. I've never sterlised a thing Blush and I've got 2 kids.

LittleLongDog · 06/01/2020 01:26

Why is everyone hand washing their pet bowls?!

Does it depend what you feed them? If I had pet bowls with globules of smelly tinned wet food in jelly/gravy left on them I could see why I wouldn’t want them mixing with the human things. But the cat eats plain biscuits and the dog eats better than I do! (Turkey, veggies, egg, etc.) Everything goes in together one hot wash a day in the dishwasher (overnight).

I do make sure I run a cleaning cycle on it quite often though as I don’t like the idea of a dirty dishwasher.

MiniGuinness · 06/01/2020 03:53

Because they are so so massive they honestly don’t fit, I don’t know why everything has to be cooked in a witches cauldron, but here we are.
Why is everyone hand washing their pet bowls?! my little weirdo will only eat out of one bowl so it is far easier to just rinse it off and refill it.

Winter2019 · 06/01/2020 04:47

Only wash wooden boards / spoons in the sink

PurpleDaisies · 06/01/2020 05:01

Maybe twice a week. Like others, it’s mainly wooden chopping boards and a few pans that don’t go in the dishwasher.

ec1993 · 06/01/2020 05:03

Once a day. I wash big pans/wok in the sink if they cannot fit in the dishwasher. Everything else goes in. If we have a big family dinner with parents over etc or a big roast, I use the sink to soak trays etc and then stick them in the dishwasher the next day 😂 easily my favourite household machine!

ec1993 · 06/01/2020 05:04

Forgot to add that I wash up our wooden chopping boards and big sharp knives.

northernknickers · 06/01/2020 07:21

Quite a lot actually...some things don't get clean (caked on 'stuff') and take up far too much space, like saucepans and roasting tins. Also, tall stemmed wine glasses are too delicate/tall (they topple over).

So yeah...few times a week. It's no hassle really is it?

Icanflyhigh · 06/01/2020 07:24

Never ever ever ever ever.
I HATE washing pots!

chocolatefudgecake17 · 06/01/2020 07:41

I have a dishwasher. It came with my house. I've never turned it on. Not once. I wash everything in the sink.

Poetryinaction · 06/01/2020 07:46

Every day a couple of times. We have 3 kids and a small dishwasher, and some things can't go through it.

Carlamity · 06/01/2020 07:54

I wash up twice a day. My daughter's medical equipment can't be put in the dishwasher and must be done morning and evening. I also wash big pots and pans in the evening as these don't fit in the dishwasher. I run the dishwasher every evening and it's always full.

stripeypillowcase · 06/01/2020 07:57

why?
if for environmental reasons: most dishwashers use a lot less energy and water than washing up the same amount of dishes per hand. check the manual. ours uses 7l water on the eco cycle. and everything gets clean.

CactusAndCacti · 06/01/2020 08:11

A couple of bowls a day.

If we had three kids I'm sure we'd be doing washing up every day. A dishwasher just wouldn't fit everything in!

This is our problem, DW gets run once a day, it is a lot of the plastic stuff that gets hand washed.

Sharp knives we hand wash, mainly because there is no where for them to go.

The DW was here when we moved in, and isn't great for stacking. We previously had a slimline, and whilst it did take less you could stack it a lot better, I will replace ours at some point, and will be choosing carefully.

yearinyearout · 06/01/2020 08:16

I wash my non stick saucepans in the sink as the dishwasher ruins them.

chocolatefudgecake17 · 06/01/2020 11:30

@stripeypillowcase nothing to do with the environmentBlush I just think they ruin dishes, especially glasses but the main reason is I like to wash, dry and put away immediately and they idea of going back an hour or whatever later would just drive me mad

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 06/01/2020 11:47

Pet bowls only, since they need cleaning more often than I run the dishwasher.

My youngest has a mug that can't go in which he loves... I might rinse the airfryer basket if it doesn't need a real wash.

Otherwise, if it doesn't go in the dishwasher, it doesn't belong in our house!
