What a beautiful boy, fabulous to get to 21 Flowers

Here is a recent thread where I got some very kind advice about my 18-year-old (RIP): www.mumsnet.com/Talk/the_litter_tray/3774838-Sad-about-my-old-cat-dont-know-what-to-do-for-best

LadofThigh · 04/01/2020 16:19

Aw, he's a beautiful old chap, OP. Flowers

So sad reading about elderly cats leaving you all. Ours will be 17 this year and my sons utterly adore him. They will be absolutely devastated when he goes. He still seems fit and healthy but he refuses to get into the car and has not actively seen the vet since 2006!!!! I get him his worming stuff etc and all has been great since one fox attacked him almost 14 years back so he is a sturdy thing. Still not nice to know he is on his last few years :(

One good piece of advice that I was given: it's better to say goodbye a week too early than a week too late. They can go downhill very suddenly at the end, which causes them more suffering and you more distress.

MincePiesGetInMyBelly · 04/01/2020 17:31

We had to put our 21 DCat to sleep. Once she started pooing in the house (and it was not solid!) we could tell it was time. She was also frail and had sore paws, love her.

MitziK · 04/01/2020 17:54

I'm saying this in the kindest way I possibly can, OP.

I'm looking at the photo and, combined with your description, I think it is time.

Within a short time, I believe you will see him get up, take a few paces and then collapse back down on the floor where it's cooler. It doesn't matter how much a vet tries with drips and overnight stays, he will have just a few hours, maybe a day or two, before it is an urgent kindness. It's far better for them to not suffer those few extra, pain filled (for both of you) days. It's better for you.

I've done it with mine. You can't see it in their face and eyes because you love them so much - and then, suddenly, you see. And you know.

So sorry OP. I went through this with my old girl aged 18 and it was heartbreaking. What a lovely long life he has had with you since you rescued him! Flowers

SpamChaudFroid · 06/01/2020 20:07

I'm so sorry your beautiful and handsome cat is no longer with you. What a lovely long life he had. We're so lucky to have them for the time we do.

Fluffycloudland77 · 06/01/2020 20:36

You did so well to get him to 21yo. It’s so hard to lose them though.

Write the next few weeks off.

Beamur · 06/01/2020 21:22

Ah, that's sad but perhaps not entirely unexpected.
Doesn't make it any easier though.
Flowers for your lovely boy x

ChrisPriss · 07/01/2020 10:29

scaryteacher · 07/01/2020 13:52

I am so sorry. They give us such affection and a reason to get up in the morning. 21 is a great age, and he was loved and cared for.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 08/01/2020 09:44

Ah I'm so sorry to hear this. Sending you love xx
