It sounds like it's time for him to go. Really sorry op but it's the best thing for him. Sad

LadyOfTheCanyon · 03/01/2020 13:15

He's such a handsome lad. We have to do the best by them and probably better a day too soon than a day too late. Thinking of you whatever the outcome OP. Thanks

fastliving · 03/01/2020 17:42

Beautiful cat, it's so difficult watching them get old (older) all the best op

What a beautiful gent. He sounds very loved.

EdersonsSmileyTattoo · 03/01/2020 17:50

Such a beautiful boy OP.

My eldest will be 19 this year and is showing very similar signs, this is the worst part of owning a pet. Sending love to you and your boy Smile

BotBotticelli · 03/01/2020 17:54

My childhood cat lived to be 21 - so special. Enjoy the time you have with him xx

SalemTheTeenageWitch · 03/01/2020 18:10

OP, your cat is gorgeous, what a friendly face! Was he a tinker when he was younger?!
My cats are my world and I you both the best for Monday.

Muminabun · 03/01/2020 18:18

So sorry to hear that OP what a wonderful old age your cat has reached. If you take him to the vet don’t let them persuaded you to run loads of tests and put him on all sorts of medications. I have known vets to do this as they are fee earners and it is not in the pets best interests. Stick to your guns if you think this is the end.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 03/01/2020 18:30

Wishing you some clarity on Monday, OP

Aragog · 03/01/2020 18:42

My cat got to this stage around the same age but the vet felt she still had some quality of life and seemed happy in herself, so was reluctant to do anything.

She constantly wanted to be outside, she was very much an outdoor cat and didn't like to be indoors much, though we did have her inside at night time. We kept her at home and continued to care for her, again though with her outside most of the time - her choices she'd cry to be let out. She died aged 23y.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 03/01/2020 18:42

Agree with @Muminabun too.

We did feel pretty awful not agreeing to invasive testing, but we knew our cat and really didn't feel it was the right thing for her.

madcatladyforever · 03/01/2020 18:48

It's difficult to say. My cat is 18 and much the same. I have a downstairs loo and put cat litter in a large bin bag flat on the floor with nrwspaper underneath. She goes in that and when it's ready for changing I just bag it up and replace. Much easier than a litter tray or going outside. She only sleeps downstairs and has pain killers for arthritis. She's doing OK.

minesagin37 · 03/01/2020 18:52

Don't give up on him yet. Mine is 21 blind has an amazing appetite, insists on feeding every 3/4 hours. He can find his way around the house with the other cats, loves to sunbathe and is now snuggled up on the sofa.Give him lots of affection and get him a litter tray indoors.

EmmaC78 · 03/01/2020 21:17

I feel for you OP. I had to get my cat PTS in November at the age of 19 and it is really hard to know when is the right time.

Wolfiefan · 03/01/2020 21:18

He’s lovely. Wishing you well at the vet.
Older cats can find certain litter hard on their paws. They can also struggle to get into high litter trays or hold on until they get outside.
The weight loss could be serious but it could be something treatable like thyroid. I would see what the vet says. Flowers

Ah, he is a lovely boy , 21 is a fabulous landmark birthday for a cat !

Our old cat was 17 (still jumping up on the NDN 6' fence but we had to put a dustbin beside it to help her and she didn't do it with grace or style )

NDN cat was 21 , they found him as a tiny kitten.

One of the reasons I chose to have DCat PTS (she was going into all the old age changes that happen with cats) was she wasn't eating and was "struggling" .
NDN cat had been PTS 6 months before so she lost her bestie .

The Vet said her thyroid levels were high (she had regular blood tests in her older years ) with the risks involved .

She went outdoors a lot and I didn't want her wandering off to die , possibly suffering ?
She wouldn't have tolerated being kept in.

Our Vet said we were making the right decision. She had a great life with us and I wanted her to have as good a death as possible . Which she did .

Flowers . Your cat sounds amazing .

Sorry I don't agree with this. The cats mentioned are very different, this one sounds like he is still healthy and is managing fine. Ops cat is getting skinnier and is wobbly on his legs, as well as having issues with his bowels. His body is shutting down. It sucks, but to keep going with him wouldnt be in his best interests. Sad

frugalkitty · 04/01/2020 11:57

He's a lovely looking boy. When I had to take one of our cats to be pts a couple of years ago, I was half expecting to be told 'we could try this....' or have the vet be a bit judgy but she was so kind and told me that's it's always kinder to do it one day too early than one day too late. Flowers

unicornsrule · 04/01/2020 16:03

He's beautiful op. It's such a difficult decision and only one you and your family can make ❤

scaryteacher · 04/01/2020 16:14

Hi is gorgeous. Mine are 16, so have this all to come (again). My lovely ginger boy was PTS at 19; it was almost 15 years ago, but it still breaks my heart.
