Suitable for a twelve year old and a fifteen year old. We watched Notting Hill and the both laughed a lot, but I did fast forward the odd bit that I felt too adult for younger dd in particular ( the restaurant scene etc). Older dd only just 15. They would like a Rom com or costume drama type thing. Enjoyed Jane Eyre , and the Jennifer Ehle Pride and Prejudice. Hate things like Home Alone, eg slapstick.
My mind has gone blank ! Can be 1930s onward really, as we do watch old films too.

The greatest showman!

bobstersmum · 02/01/2020 20:51

And Eddie the Eagle

If they loved Pride and Prejudice what about the BBC adaptation I can never get enough of this. Some old classics like Arsenic and Old Lace, Some like it Hot. As said above School of Rock and the Holiday and one I saw was on the other day Cool Runnings about a Jamacian bobsleigh team at the Olympics.

Yes there are loads of dodgy refs in Legally Blonde, I agree. Also the whole “bend and snap” thing is somewhat cringy.
Bridget Jones much too adult I think ?
It is quite hard finding things that are ok for 12, I find the ratings somewhat random. A film like Suffragette , rated a 12, would be much too adult for dd2, would upset her a lot. Other things that are 15 are fine because they have that rating due to swearing, but are otherwise gently and kind. So it is hard picking things unless I have seen them, yet it is nicer to all watch something we don’t know.
Still have not recovered from the shock of Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children, with the piles of eyeballs etc ...it is a 12.

What about some retro ones?

The Goonies
Stand by Me
Breakfast Club
Jumanji
Back to the Future

SirVixofVixHall · 02/01/2020 21:15

Yes it is the BBC version of P and P they love . They didn’t enjoy the Keira Knightly film version. Also the BBC Jane Eyre, and Bleak House was brilliant too.
I think we will watch Some Like It Hot over the weekend. We have half of The Philadelphia Story left to watch tomorrow.

Letters to Juliet is a really sweet film. No sexual references I don't think

wowfudge · 02/01/2020 21:25

What about some classic Alfred Hitchcock? Not Psycho, but North by Northwest or Rear Window are fantastic films.

sparklefarts · 02/01/2020 21:26

Wild child

doadeer · 02/01/2020 21:27

She's the man is funny too

I did think maybe the less terrifying Hitchcocks might be good, but I think dd2 might still find them nightmare inducing, although North by Northwest could be ok, and The 39 Steps might be fine for her, the first one, and The Lady Vanishes. I am trying to remember the films that I watched with my parents aged 12/13. I saw the 39 Steps shown in a local arthouse cinema then. I also watched all the Ealing comedies with them around that time, and a lot of older musicals.

I think dd1 is old enough for something like Night of the Hunter, but not dd2.

The way way back

It's a comedy drama with Steve Carell and its a really great film for anyone.

Stravapalava · 02/01/2020 22:18

I really enjoyed The Kid Who Would Be King, it's aimed at kids maybe a bit younger than them, but every adult I've spoken to loves it.

Cool Runnings
Romeo & Juliet - the one with Leonardo di Caprio in
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Clueless
Pitch Perfect - all of them
Star Wars
10 Things I Hate About You
I Know What You Did Last Summer - not scary but a bit gory maybe?
Footloose
The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants
Steel Magnolias

HarrietSchulenberg · 02/01/2020 22:33

If you like older films, Harvey is brilliant. My 12yo loves it, especially the bit where Mother's portrait has been swapped for that of Harvey (a 6ft rabbit).

Geraniumblue · 02/01/2020 22:38

Seconding ‘Bend it Like Beckham’ also ‘Freaky Friday’ is really fun. The Parent Trap is good too.

Ifionlyknewthenwhatiknownow3 · 02/01/2020 22:45

Check out ' Big Fat Liar ' v funny

SirVixofVixHall · 02/01/2020 23:42

Ten Things I Hate About You has so many dodgy sex references. I bought it to watch with them and we started watching, dd2 was like this Shock and I realised I had forgotten so much of it. Common Sense Media says 14 for it which seems about right.

12 Angry Men and To Kill a Mockingbird are classics.

Nuttyfellalovesnutella · 02/01/2020 23:58

Little Women is great if you like Sense and Sensibility.

wowfudge · 03/01/2020 00:04

If you can get the Anne of Green Gables series filmed on Prince Edward Island from the mid 80s, that is lovely.

Tinkletwat · 03/01/2020 00:04

Hunt for the Wilderpeople

AnneElliott · 03/01/2020 00:14

Agree with Lost in Austen and we loved Hidden Figures.

What about the other Austen adaptations? The Gwyneth Paltrow version of Emma is very good.

SirVixofVixHall · 03/01/2020 00:20

I had lots of nightmares after seeing To Kill a Mockingbird when I was a child, so I think that needs to wait a couple of years although it is a brilliant film . Dd1 would like it, I might watch it with her next time dd2 is on a sleepover. Dd1 would also like 12 Angry Men I think.
Dd2 had very bad nightmares for ages after a seemingly innocuous film she was shown in year 1, and it was just the sort of thing that would have upset me too, when I was small, so I can at least usually predict what she will find disturbing. She watched Lord of the Rings and was mainly fine but the tiny clip of Gollum being tortured did upset her a lot and we fast forward it if we watch the film, or she leaves the room briefly. It is horrible, I agree.
This is the hardest age for films I think, old enough to want emotional depth and a complex plot, but not old enough to deal with edgier adult themes.
