Suitable for a twelve year old and a fifteen year old. We watched Notting Hill and the both laughed a lot, but I did fast forward the odd bit that I felt too adult for younger dd in particular ( the restaurant scene etc). Older dd only just 15. They would like a Rom com or costume drama type thing. Enjoyed Jane Eyre , and the Jennifer Ehle Pride and Prejudice. Hate things like Home Alone, eg slapstick.
My mind has gone blank ! Can be 1930s onward really, as we do watch old films too.

Dd2 has seen Bill and loved it.

DD1 (also 12) hated The Princess Bride 'It's just a standard man saves helpless Princess film' she said in disgust as she left the room.

Big hits here: Hidden Figures, Stardust, Wonder, The Greatest Showman, all HP films and the female led superhero films, the female Ghostbusters, Yesterday, Frozen 2 (a year ago the 12 year old would not have watched it but she loved it). We've got Pitch Perfect for Christmas based on her love of Glee, hoping it'll be a hit. I'm also going to try out some classics like the Branagh Much Ado About Nothing or the Leonardo DiCaprio Romeo and Juliet to see how she gets on and then we might buy RSC tickets.

Hidden Figures is an excellent film, Martian, Darkest Hour, something called Darkest Minds on Sky Cinema. Avengers series.

What about some early screwball comedies? Bringing Up Baby, It Happened One Night, The Philadelphia Story...

CountFosco · 02/01/2020 19:28

Mamma Mia and Grease were big hits here. We like our musicals!

TheBoxOfDelights · 02/01/2020 19:28

Wonder is fab too.

Aibuornotoop · 02/01/2020 19:29

Just go with it

SirVixofVixHall · 02/01/2020 19:31

Love Bringing up Baby etc. Don’t think they have seen Philadelphia Story so that might be good.

Grease too adult I think, and I hated Mama Mia, I can’t bear to watch that again , even though we all love musicals too.

I love films but family friendly isn’t my strong suit - I’m sure there are loads I love, I just can’t think of them

Groundhog Day
Truman Show
School of Rock
Edward Scissorhands
80s stuff like Back To The Future, Electric Dreams (one of my favourites but sadly not widely seen), The Goonies, Gremlins, Ferris Bueller

I really like Addams Family Values (much better than the first)

If they like foreign films, maybe My Life As A Dog? (It’s been a while though, can’t remember if there’s anything inappropriate)

Or something like To Kill A Mockingbird?

Bogoffrain · 02/01/2020 19:43

Three men and a baby?

ChunkyButFunkeyy · 02/01/2020 19:45

Harry Potter

ChunkyButFunkeyy · 02/01/2020 19:47

Harry Potter
Legally blonde
Bridget Jones
Angus thongs and perfect snogging

Flywheel · 02/01/2020 19:48

Mine enjoyed hidden figures and also Lion

SlayingDragons · 02/01/2020 19:55

Oh yes! Legally Blonde is a good shout for an appropriate Rom Com

musicinspring1 · 02/01/2020 19:58

I was going to suggest Stardust. Labyrinth ? How are they with young adult films ? I quite enjoyed Divergent but then I’m a fan of Theo James ...

4forkssake · 02/01/2020 20:02

I'd look at some of the 80's classics like Ferris Bueller, Goonies, The Outsiders, Pretty in Pink, Dirty Dancing, Back to the Future, Dead Poets Society.

Wonder is also brilliant.

imamearcat · 02/01/2020 20:02

I watched bend it like beckham the other day, love it!

SirVixofVixHall · 02/01/2020 20:12

Legally Blonde has too much sex I think , for my smaller dd. But I haven’t seen it for yonks so maybe I am wrong.
We are watching The Philadelphia Story, I will be making notes of films suggested though, for the next few days.

Emma
Stardust
Little women (90s version or at the cinema)
Jumanji
Harry Potter
Importance of being earnest
Ever after (I was obsessed with this as a young teen)
Mask of zorro
Man in the iron mask
Count of monte cristo
Entrapment
Lost in Austen (mini series)
Overboard (still find this so funny!)

frecklesforever · 02/01/2020 20:16

I recommend The Dish. Gentle and funny... rewatched many times.

doadeer · 02/01/2020 20:17

I don't remember any sex at all in legally blonde are you sure?

namechange5575 · 02/01/2020 20:29

We used to watch The Three Amigos as a family. Brilliant. Also was going to recommend Philadelphia Story - how about Harvey? Also The Hudsucker Proxy, and Singing in the Rain.

CountFosco · 02/01/2020 20:38

Common Sense Media says Legally Blond is OK for a 12yo. Seems to be lots of dodgy references rather than anything graphic.

Into the Woods is a good musical option.

bobstersmum · 02/01/2020 20:49

Forest gump
Love actually
Bridget Jones
The holiday
Castaway
Mrs doubtfire
Kingsman
Hunger games
Twilight
