Suitable for a twelve year old and a fifteen year old. We watched Notting Hill and the both laughed a lot, but I did fast forward the odd bit that I felt too adult for younger dd in particular ( the restaurant scene etc). Older dd only just 15. They would like a Rom com or costume drama type thing. Enjoyed Jane Eyre , and the Jennifer Ehle Pride and Prejudice. Hate things like Home Alone, eg slapstick.
My mind has gone blank ! Can be 1930s onward really, as we do watch old films too.

The Princess Bride is excellent - so much better than the title would suggest.

Big is also fun.

highlandcoo · 02/01/2020 18:59

There are also all the other JA films of course

SirVixofVixHall · 02/01/2020 19:02

DH suggested the Princess Bride, for some unknown reason DD2 has decided she won’t like it, but it is on the possible list

Gosford Park, Remains of the Day, Murder on the Orient Express

SirVixofVixHall · 02/01/2020 19:08

Is Gosford park ok ? I thought it it had sex scenes ?

A United Kingdom is brilliant, also The King’s Speech. (There is one scene in it where the King repeatedly shouts “fuck” but it is genuinely significant to the storyline and other than that there is nothing in it which is unsuitable.)

Pitch Perfect could work - my DD12 has seen the first two, but I think not the 3rd one. (I know it’s not Rom Com or Period but it’s great!)

SlayingDragons · 02/01/2020 19:10

Or what about Hidden Figures? Also not period or rom com but brilliant film and my 12 & 14 year olds loved it

AmIthechristmasfairy · 02/01/2020 19:11

Bill on amazon prime.

The untold story of Shakespeare from the original horrible histories team. Very funny for all ages.

TheTittefers · 02/01/2020 19:11

We watched Apollo 13 this week (DD13 and DS9). Also Back to the Future.

SirVixofVixHall · 02/01/2020 19:12

The King’s Speech might be good, I don’t mind swearing, we watch things like Detectorists as a family. I don’t want anything with too much violence (eg Suffragette) or too adult sex scenes. The one in Notting Hill was fine. She is an innocent 12, we live in a rural area and the dds don’t watch adult type tv like soaps or Love Island stuff.

I was obsessed with Wuthering Heights at 12.

iwillnevereatspaghetti · 02/01/2020 19:12

Fighting with my family, fisherman's friends neither are romcom or period but lovely none the less also we bought a zoo

SirVixofVixHall · 02/01/2020 19:14

Will google Bill and Hidden Figures, have not heard of those before. Smaller dd loves Horrible Histories.

Lord of the rings?

SlayingDragons · 02/01/2020 19:15

Oh and The Hundred Foot Journey is lovely. It’s a bit of an unknown film in that’s it didn’t get a wide cinema release here I don’t think, but it’s good and would be totally suitable

SirVixofVixHall · 02/01/2020 19:16

i think smaller dd would find Wuthering Heights too distressing, she is v nightmare prone.

SirVixofVixHall · 02/01/2020 19:17

We all loved Lord of the Rings.

Mine love hidden figures. Little women is brill (at cinema). My dc are currently into Daddy Daycare, Big Momma’s house, Mall Cop. It’s really hard to get suitable films but I find Common Sense Media fab for guidance. Fantastic Beasts?

SirVixofVixHall · 02/01/2020 19:21

Common Sense Media is good isn’t it. I do use that. We have seen Fantastic Beasts.

There are lots of 12 cert romcoms.
Look for Adam Sandler.
Also Hugh Grant (thinking Music and Lyrics but there must be more).
My 15YO still loves Disney and she's in the sitting room with 15yo boyfriend watching The Grinch right now, so don't worry too much if it's a bit 'too young'.
Or retro? Pretty in Pink, John Hughes type films? Goonies?
Pirates of the Caribbean if not too scary.

CroissantsAtDawn · 02/01/2020 19:24

Les visiteurs is fantastic. I watched it at that age with subtitles and adored it.

OrchidFlakes · 02/01/2020 19:25

My best friends wedding springs to mind

SleepWarrior · 02/01/2020 19:25

The hobbit films.

For a romcom try Shooting Fish or Clueless.

Shakespeare in Love was good I think.

For more current films The Kid Who Would King was good.

CroissantsAtDawn · 02/01/2020 19:26

Mamma mia?
Jurassic park (the original) is fantastic though not rom com...
