What has YouTube taught you to do?

Dd (9) and I did some art tutorials on YouTube today. I'm terrible at drawing but my cat sketch did not look like a creature from the deep, so win for me. I very rarely use YouTube other than for SNL sketches if I want to kill a few minutes. But obviously it's potentially a useful tool, so what have you learned to do using online videos?

Make ridiculously intricate royal iced sugar cookies by watching Julia M Usher. Dd thinks it’s fab!

SyntheticPumpkin · 02/01/2020 18:11

I learnt to knit from watching YouTube videos.

It’s sadly not proving as useful for crochet.

FamilyOfAliens · 02/01/2020 18:12

Learned to replace the door handle on the bathroom door. I felt right proud of myself for that.

In the past week I've learnt how to fix a non-draining dishwasher, change a door lock and rewire a light switch through YouTube. I use it for a lot of DIY stuff.

Aquamarine1029 · 02/01/2020 18:14

Loads of stuff. Car repairs, recipes, Instant Pot, Air fryer, plumbing, the list goes on. YouTube is wonderful.

creamcheeseandlox · 02/01/2020 18:15

Diagnosed a faulty oven element and then showed me how to change it when I had a new one. Saving me lots of money on getting a engineer out.

JellyfishandShells · 02/01/2020 18:16

How to repressure the boiler - the very detailed print user guide with many a diagram was useless but a one minute video ( not produced by the manufacturer) was clear and concise. Also, how to tighten up a soft close hinge.

LexCake · 02/01/2020 18:17

I learnt how to remove a radiator but sadly not how to fit the new one.

SmellMySmellbow · 02/01/2020 18:17

How to replace seal on washing machine, how to replace flushing mechanism of a toilet, how to install a new radiator, how to change HD and battery on a mac book, how to use Adobe Illustrator, how to solve a rubiks cube... and much more! I love generous internet geeks.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 02/01/2020 18:19

Knit
Sew
Repressurise the boiler
Replace the door on a washing machine

HerBigChance · 02/01/2020 18:28

How to repressurise the boiler, same as PPs.

Shockers · 02/01/2020 18:29

Knit

Petrarkanian · 02/01/2020 18:34

French plaits

Petrarkanian · 02/01/2020 18:34

Oh and napkin folding!

BigStripeyBastard · 02/01/2020 18:35

Crochet.
Fix the thermostatic rad valve on my living room radiator.
Replace the rubber bung thing in my toilet cistern (Ok, I've not actually done it yet but in theory I could if I could be arsed).

LadyCordeliaVorkosigan · 02/01/2020 18:36

Managed to reset tenant's boiler when it lost pressure after a power cut. Took me and her standing on kitchen counters while I googled, but got heating back in 30 min.

Found which parts of dishwasher might fix the problem and resolved it for a whole 2 quid plus postage from nice folks at Bosch.

Also great for Excel and Outlook as work don't seem to have installed the help files and lots of things have changed recently.

On YouTube I also recommend Politics Unboringed for age 7+, by Jay Foreman, who has also done a song listing all 270 tube stations.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 02/01/2020 18:41

MustardScreams I love cake decorating but biscuits scare me. I'll check out that channel.

Lots of diy. I might start searching before I ring my dad Grin

My mum taught me to knit and crochet. I'm not sure I'd be able to work them out from a video so luckily I know already!

Loads, but mostly since having Dd.

Build everything from cot to pram to pushchair to toys. I give up on instructions now I'm just like YouTube it.

thenightsky · 02/01/2020 18:48

How to change the gearbox fluid on my car. Loads of car fixes actually.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 02/01/2020 18:49

Interesting about instructions and things like Excel mentioned above. I tend to go to wikiHow or similar for written instructions instead of a video when I need a how to.

Various editing techniques in photoshop such as adding textures and creating a realistic looking painted face using a displacement map. YouTube has been great for helping me learn how to use photoshop.

Bluebutterfly90 · 02/01/2020 18:53

I watch a lot of cleaning/organisation/decluttering videos. It might sound weird but putting on a cleaning video and then doing my housework at the same time is very calming.
I learned Marie Kondo folding from YouTube, as I had sort of grasped the theory of it but it was much more useful to watch someone doing it and follow along.

I TRIED crochet, but I just cant crack it.

NannyPear · 02/01/2020 18:53

Had to use it to workout how to open a tin of corned beef...

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 02/01/2020 18:58

Folding double fitted sheets (that's my best one)
Nalbinding
Long draw and Great Wheel spinning
Rolled hemming stitch
Replacing the handle on my 1940 Singer sewing machine
