What has YouTube taught you to do?

Dd (9) and I did some art tutorials on YouTube today. I'm terrible at drawing but my cat sketch did not look like a creature from the deep, so win for me. I very rarely use YouTube other than for SNL sketches if I want to kill a few minutes. But obviously it's potentially a useful tool, so what have you learned to do using online videos?

How to crochet - I went from being unable to fathom how to make a granny square to knocking up amigurumi figures. I've made all sorts.

How to make my own jewellery - I love the expensive Bella Jane silver bracelets but they're expensive, so I buy inferior supplies and make my own. Started out doing shambala bracelets years ago.

How to do my own gel nails - I can do my own overlays and even do my own extensions with polygel now. Invested £200 in products and equipment, and watched endless tutorials!

I love youtube. Over the last couple of years I've learnt

Tunisian crochet.
Amigurumi.
Origami
How to fix my oven.
How to fix parts of our car.
How to solve a rubix cube and the triangle version too.
How to apply ayiner to my hooded eyes and also how to apply eyeshadow correctly too.

There'll be more than I can't think of at the minute but

I'm going to use it to learn to sew this year too.

Virtually nothing, I find print/diagrams/photos far easier to learn from. I frequently use downloadable pdf instructions for things though.

How to change the drive belt on my Dyson. It was so straightforward. DH used it yesterday to fix the sticking latch on the keypad on our garden gate.

Open the washing machine mid cycle.
Get security tags off clothes.

Makeup. When I started watching YouTube I was about 13, and the likes of Lauren Luke and Michelle Phan were the stars. It wasn't 'instagrammy' back then... In fact I think a lot of times eyebrows were left untouched/ quick run through with powder or pencil. My makeup style has evolved through the years with the trends, but you don't have to go for the drag queen Instagram makeup trends, there are still soft natural looks to follow today. Lauren Luke made a comeback to YouTube actually, and she's still the same down to earth lass she was before. Probably detrimental to her channel what with 'influencer' culture, but she has kept true to herself.

Crochetgirl67 · 02/01/2020 19:42

I learnt to crochet, fix a non draining dishwasher, Instant Pot, Bullet Journaling, yoga and how to make Xmas wreaths. Love YouTube.

NoEffort · 02/01/2020 19:42

Procrastinate 🤣

virginpinkmartini · 02/01/2020 19:43

I should maybe add that I get a lot of compliments on my apparent technical ability when I make an effort with my makeup for work/ going out, so YouTube can't have done me too wrong over the years.

gamerwidow · 02/01/2020 19:44

How to fix a dishwasher, how to use the stupid mousepad on my new laptop, how to top up the engine coolant in my car, how to make slime and how to descale my coffee machine.

Doman · 02/01/2020 19:48

I taught myself cement mixing and bricklaying (and then built a front garden wall and re-landscaped my back garden with brick beds).

Also rug-making, loom knitting and gin-making.

I love the University of YouTube!

I’m dyspraxic and learned how to thread a sewing machine from YouTube. I never thought I’d get it. I’m still not confident with other things yet, and I know it will take me a while but I’ll get there.

Husband mended our oven by watching a YouTube video. We thought we’d need to replace the whole thing, but it turned out to be some part that he bought for less than £5 on eBay.

Greedycushionhoarder2 · 02/01/2020 19:58

To sew, using both an antique handcrankb singer and a modern electric machine, followed YouTube videos on how to make dog collars and leads.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 02/01/2020 19:59

How to tie a tie and how to fold a pop-up tent.

I think I'm dyspraxic and have to look them up every time I need to do them, but I can get them done! Love YouTube. I also put my friend's hair up once!

MrsJonesAndMe · 02/01/2020 20:01

Crochet too and I often use it for ideas when I'm baking.
