Anyone else got this awful chesty cough?

Lottapianos · 01/01/2020 20:28

Asking for poor DP, not me. Started on Sunday with sore throat and body aches, now absolutely horrendous chesty cough, really hacking his guts out. No fever, and hes eating, but no energy and he looks terrible. Hes otherwise in decent health and not on any medication

See GP or just wait it out? All advice gratefully received

Me, exactly the same symptoms. Horrifically painful sore throat which extended into a really chesty cough. I'm now on day 6 having come down with it on Boxing Day. It has totally floored me. I've done barely anything and even walking to the shop today (5 mins each way) wore me out. In fact getting ready to go there wore me out.

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 01/01/2020 20:33

I haven't been to the doctor but I was going to yesterday if I didn't start to feel better, which I did a little. I've been on night nurse, lemsip and nurofen, all carefully spaced out for maximum impact. Lots of tea and water, couldn't swallow food for a few days.

joan12 · 01/01/2020 20:34

Yes. Went to the GP after four weeks and also because I started getting a fever at night. Chest infection diagnosed and treated, but I still have the cough. It's not as horrendous as it was but it's been five weeks now and clearly viral. The tiredness seems much better but it was brutal so your dp has my every sympathy. It's a horrid one.

Me! I’ve had it since the 22nd and still no sign of it doing one. Sore throat, whole body aches, hacking cough and constant blocked/runny nose (which is now delightfully glow in the dark!)
Never felt so horrendous in my entire life. I want to sleep but can’t. If I eat, I’m sick. Horrible Sad
Hope your DP is on the mend soon!

SapatSea · 01/01/2020 20:37

My poor son 17 came down with this first day off sixth form. Hasn't been able to face playing console games or even TV, eating but much less than normal, still hacking his guts up but says he is feeling clearer in the head and has managed a few short walks. He was really looking forward to Christmas and feels the holiday has been wasted.

Geoffreythecat · 01/01/2020 20:41

Yes, I've had it. Five and a half weeks on and almost better at last. I never catch anything, can't remember the last time I had a cold, but this really floored me. Exactly the same, starting with a very sore throat, followed by complete exhaustion, endless snot and a constant cough. Have lost 9lbs. He's got my sympathy.

Anise7438 · 01/01/2020 20:44

Yes DH several friends and colleagues. Seems to linger for ages. DH has had it since Dec 20th

SantaBeckett · 01/01/2020 20:48

I have got it too , my sore throat lasted about 4 days but the cough has been going on for just over two weeks , it feels like i constantly have a lump of mucus st the top of my throat ( sorry TMI ) but it will not come up.

I have found that dozing it the bath helps , the steam makes it easier to breath and the more upright sleeping position stops me waking up coughing my lungs up .

Now just need something to stop me from peeing every time I cough Blush

IncyWincyGrownUp · 01/01/2020 20:54

Into month three If it here, it’s horrid. Been to see a GP twice, no infection. It’s a hard slog.

BarbedBloom · 01/01/2020 21:21

Had this for two months. Had antibiotics for chest but still cannot shift it. It seems to fade away and then suddenly come back full force. It is really annoying me, my chest aches.

BarbedBloom · 01/01/2020 21:22

Meant to say mine started with sore throat too and exhaustion

Lottapianos · 01/01/2020 23:12

Dear god, you poor people. Some of you seem to have it way worse than he has. Hes eating normally and has had no sickness so thank heavens for that. Hes got a streaming nose though and the cough is verging on scary. Sounds like one of those really debilitating nasty viral bugs that you just have to work through and rest as much as possible. Hope you're all on the road to recovery very soon x

I had it in November. After the second week I got some antibiotics and it actually lasted 4 weeks. Dry chesty cough which lasted about a minute, until it was hard to breathe.

Heismyopendoor · 01/01/2020 23:21

I had it around the second week of December thought i was getting better but around the 20th it was terrible again. Lots and lots of green phlegm, I think mine was more bronchitis. I’ve not been able to do anything and have been in bed ever since. Feeling much better today though, got a little cooking done and finally can go outside tomorrow for some fresh air!

Turquiose · 01/01/2020 23:25

Same here. GP gave me an inhaler to open airways but still have bruised feeling in chest and coughing up stuff (sorry for tmi). Told me to rest as much as possible. 3rd week. Getting there but unless it's an chest infection then antibiotics won't help. Could try towel over bowl of steaming hot water or standing in bathroom with hot steam from shower to help loosen? Latter has helped me a bit.

ohfourfoxache · 01/01/2020 23:25

Mine started with a pretty bad cold early-mid December, seemed to be getting bebetter then cough/difficulty breathing started 23 December then just got worse. Started antibiotics on Monday, been on inhalers for weeks but I’m shaking even at rest because I can’t breathe properly. My concentration is shot to shit. Just hope that the antibiotics kick in soon.

snop · 01/01/2020 23:27

Me haven't had a decent nights sleep in over a week

Kanga83 · 01/01/2020 23:28

Yes it's bloody horrid. I ended up in Resus on a nebuliser and steroids last week because of it. Two weeks in, I'm still coughing and feel rather crap.

Tigger001 · 01/01/2020 23:29

Watching for everyone's general advice, as I have started with it in the last 2 days and feel rubbish, back to relying on my Inhaler more.

My neighbour said this is just the start (Thank you doctor Confused) she had it for nearly 6 weeks, but the GP wouldn't give her anything it turned into a chest Infevtoo

pelirocco123 · 01/01/2020 23:29

Husband on day 14 i am day 10 and on holiday !! Temp has gone and manage a few hours break between each coughing fit
Very tired still and away on holiday !

milliefiori · 01/01/2020 23:29

DH has had it for a month now. Still hacking his guts out like an old man for hours every day. He is exhausted! Won't go to GP as it's not infected and he knows they'll just tell him to wait for it to clear up.He's living on Broncostop and throat lozenges.

DragonMamma · 01/01/2020 23:31

I’m on day 14 of this god awful virus. It comes in fits and starts. Some days I feel Ok-ish, others I am completely floored.

misssensible · 01/01/2020 23:33

Me and my partner both have it - as everyone says sore throat, awful cough, aches, lethargy, no appetite. Saw the new year in with no fizz. Day 6/7 here. Fortunately our children are older so we get to rest but I do remember a Christmas when we both had flu and a baby to care for. I think we had toast for Xmas lunch.

scrappydappydoo · 01/01/2020 23:36

Yup had it since November- everytime I think I’m better it returns back. I keep having coughing fits which only finish when I’ve been sick. Went to the dr just before Christmas who just lectured me about wasting appointments and everyone has it - didn’t even examine me - I came home and cried. yes I am feeling very sorry for myself...

namechangenumber2 · 02/01/2020 00:00

DH is currently laid up with some horrible illness - started Boxing Day with a tickly cough, then ear ache over the weekend. Today he looks like he's been hit by a bus and took himself off to bed at 5pm with a temp of 39.2, blood shot eyes, aching all over, stomach ache and just generally feeling crap! I'm actually wondering if he's got the flu?!
