Herc and Douglas really seem to despise one another. But in Newcastle, when MJN are flying the Air Caledonia pair three meet for the first time in years and are all rugger-bugger who ya hellos.

Can anyone explain?

CormoranStrike · 31/12/2019 18:44

They meet not three meet

I think Douglas became pissed off with Herc because, at the end of Newcastle, Herc strongly discouraged Douglas from applying to work for Air Caledonia.

mousemousse · 31/12/2019 18:51

I think that's before herc finds out that Douglas is only a first officer? So Douglas then gets annoyed he's more junior

FreezerBird · 31/12/2019 18:51

I think when the greeting happens they're not expecting to be an ongoing part of each other's lives again.

Also Douglas discovers that Herc is still flying as a captain and he HATES being reminded that he's flying first officer under Martin. Herc plays on it as well of course.

chomalungma · 31/12/2019 18:54

The best one Herc and Douglas episode is when they both compete to do the announcements.

Hilarious Both trying to out smooth each other.,

And in the last one, when Douglas says he's the Supreme Commander of the vessel.

I love CP and the way the relationships evolve.

chomalungma · 31/12/2019 18:56

I love how in Newcastle that Martin is played by a different actor.

CAROLYN: Ah, there you are, Martin.
MARTIN (sounding very different because he’s played by Tom Goodman-Hill, as Benedict Cumberbatch went sick): Hullo, Carolyn. What have I missed?
ARTHUR: Hi, Skip! You’re looking very well.
MARTIN: Oh. Thank you, Arthur.
ARTHUR: Don’t you think, Douglas?
DOUGLAS: Not specially. I think he looks exactly the same as always.

lazylinguist · 31/12/2019 18:57

I think FreezerBird nailed it. The jovial greeting was a bit of mutual rugger-bugger bonhomie related more to shared past than to any genuine liking for each other. When they go on to have to spend time together, it's a different matter. I'd imagine that once they are working together after Zurich they'd establish a kind of bantering joky repartee, but with an underlying layer of vague resentment.

Dictionariesandpictionaries · 31/12/2019 18:58

Yeah Douglas gets annoyed with Herc as the episode continues I think. I love Cabin Pressure, it's my happy place!

chomalungma · 31/12/2019 18:59

but with an underlying layer of vague resentment

I don't know. Douglas is Captain. Herc is married. MJN (or is it OJS) has survived.

But does Arthur still have his ice cream van Grin

Oh me too. So, so much. I've been known to shed a little tear over the conversation in the cockpit in St Petersburg after the bird strike - Douglas suddenly starts to address Martin as Captain, and although he offers to take over the landing, he doesn't argue when Martin says he'll do it. I think that's a turning point of all the series.

Honestly I love it so much I risk boring people half to death with it regularly. John Finnemore is a genius. He really is.

chomalungma · 31/12/2019 19:10

Have you read his blog

johnfinnemore.blogspot.com/

He talks about the characters and how they evolve. It's interesting to see how they work together.

Timbuktu - when Martin comes up with the cunning plan
Uskerty - when we see Martin and Caroline together and Arthur and Douglas bond over pineapple juice
Vaduz - Martin finds love
Wokingham - all working for Martin
Xinshou - all on Gerti - lots of bonding together, with the strange smell of bacon and hat sizes
Yves - well, we know what happens there.

It comes after the joys of Qiqitarjuak - where Martin desperately wants to be seen as a professional.

Ipswich is one of my favourites - Hey Chief Grin

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 31/12/2019 19:15

We are obsessed with it in our house and regularly quote it. My BIL (who isn't obsessed) was talking about Hitchcock films today and mentioned The Man Who Knew Too Much, much to my and DH's delight Grin

mousemousse · 31/12/2019 19:43

I regularly think about how many otters I can fit in different rooms/vehicles Grin

Yellow car

I love it all, it is indeed as PP suggested, my happy place. If I had to pick a favourite it would be the one where they have to get re-certified.

But Arthur comes good in Zurich showing his id with his father's name. So many turning points.

FreezerBird · 31/12/2019 20:24

I think Ottery St Mary (Weasels King Henry? Hedgehog O'Brian?) was the episode which really made me fall in love with it all. It reminded me so much of the sort of conversation I used to have with my much-loved late father. In fact there was one particular one about what quarter of a million chickens would look like which went on for hours and involved actual measurements and calculations.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 31/12/2019 21:50

Jelly babies to manual.

TakeMeToYourLiar · 31/12/2019 22:01

DH and I now start tricky conversations with "hey chief"

Slightly outing but this was my Xmas present, he wrote to Diageo to get it

I've met John, he signed my lemon (plastic), it's got pride of place on my shelf. Carl from ATC was there as well :-)

"You took my Pétrus, and you... mulled it"

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 31/12/2019 22:26

The lemon is in play.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 31/12/2019 23:04

I got DH a bottle of 25 year old Talisker for his 50th - and got the bottle engraved with "Happy Birling Day" Grin

TakeMeToYourLiar · 31/12/2019 23:10

Brilliant @TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross I don't drink, so would be wasted on me!

CatherineVelindre · 31/12/2019 23:56

I actually bought a yellow car.

Plumpcious · 01/01/2020 00:13

I'm listening to it on CD right now!

Re OP's question, I think I read that Herc was originally a one-off character but he/Anthony Head worked so well that JF developed him into a returning character. Going forward, Douglas' animosity towards Herc was probably a better plot device than them being best buddies.

DareDevil223 · 01/01/2020 00:14

Whenever my son and I are in the car together we play yellow car. He's 25 Grin

I love Cabin Pressure, my absolute favourite episode is Ottery St Mary. Makes me weep with laughter.
