Herc and Douglas really seem to despise one another. But in Newcastle, when MJN are flying the Air Caledonia pair three meet for the first time in years and are all rugger-bugger who ya hellos.

Can anyone explain?

I introduced DD7 to it on a long car journey. She laughed for 6 hours 😁

I don't know how many times I've heard it but it's still laugh out loud funny.

Thank you all for responding, good points well made.

I want my GD to have the names Theresa Gustava Bonaventura.

TakeMeToYourLiar · 01/01/2020 08:14

JF also had plans initially for Herc to be the baddie of the piece instead of Gordon, so that may have influenced things

chomalungma · 01/01/2020 08:37

Douglas' animosity towards Herc was probably a better plot device than them being best buddies

I love the way Douglas says 'Herc'.

And when in Yves, Caroline tells Douglas that because they need 2 pilots, then Herc will sit in the Captains seat ' as a Captain's Captain.

CormoranStrike · 01/01/2020 09:04

love the way Douglas says 'Herc'.

I love the way Douglas says anything, swoon

I didn't realise that Roger Allum played Javert in the original Les Miserables.

You can hear him here

Twyler · 01/01/2020 09:15

Just reading the words "the lemon is in play" in the posting above made me laugh out loud!

chomalungma · 01/01/2020 18:21

I am not sure what Caroline would be like as a boss.

Wall calendars can lie, deceptive things, wall calendars.

You have a complaint? Write it down on a piece of paper, and put it in the bin.

I love her relationship with Herc.

lazylinguist · 01/01/2020 20:05

We are obsessive CP fans here too, with regular quoting. John Finnemore is indeed a genius! My favourite episodes are Ottery St Mary, Douz and Uskerty. "We got thrown out of a taxi and now I'm up a tree." "It must have been quite a powerful throw." Grin Love Douglas.

chomalungma · 01/01/2020 20:17

I love Uskerty. Apparently John Finnemore was going to write Jerry, the airport owner, as horrible - but then he made him someone enthusiastic about his airport. Love Arthur's announcement.

It was also good to have Caroline with Martin and Arthur with Douglas.

RudolphIsMySpiritAnimal · 01/01/2020 20:20

"You have a complaint? Write it down on a piece of paper, and put it in the bin"

I loved "Martin, only Father Christmas cares about what you want. I am telling you what you are going to do." Regularly use it on the DC.

Userkty is my favourite. Love Ipswich too.

TakeMeToYourLiar · 01/01/2020 21:08

Favourites are
Uskerty
Ottery
Douz

Whenever I hear an airport aniuncement now it finishes in my head as "love, the airport"

Plumpcious · 01/01/2020 23:52

Why was Carolyn in such a foul mood in Uskerty?

"Why are you buying your...man you know...a stuffed sheep?"

Have you all heard the interview with John Finnemore where he treats us to some deleted scenes? My favourite is the one about Secret Santa from Molokai but there's a bit from Uskerty too.

At the end of the FD boxset

chomalungma · 02/01/2020 08:39

Why was Carolyn in such a foul mood in Uskerty

Because she had had a phone call from Gordon offering her a low offer on Gerti

chomalungma · 02/01/2020 08:42

This is also about Uskerty

johnfinnemore.blogspot.com/2013/01/uskerty.html

There's a new final scene - but I think the one that is in the show works well.

DoctorTwo · 02/01/2020 08:52

Finnimore is the king of whimsy.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 02/01/2020 13:56

Every time I hear about someone who is gluten intolerant, I think of Arthur's reply - 'Well - I'll try not to be to gluten annoying'.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 02/01/2020 16:20

No-one can ever say "nineteen" in our house without a chorus of "will you all stop saying nineteen?!"

I have a couple of colleagues who are avid listeners too, and whenever we all assemble as a group for CPD, we will always mutter to each other the following bit of dialogue:

MARTIN: Must you sit at the back, Douglas?

DOUGLAS: I always sit at the back.

MARTIN: But there's only two of us in a lecture theatre with 500 seats.

DOUGLAS: Some of which are at the back.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 02/01/2020 16:24

Favourite episodes: Ipswich, Limerick, Uskerty, Ottery St Mary, Xinzhou, Zurich (because of how beautifully and neatly it's all concluded).

Least favourite episodes: Newcastle, because the character of Linda is such a cow, Wokingham and Helsinki.

Have decided that the episodes I really enjoy are the ones which centre round the four of them without too many other characters getting a look in, although obviously Herc is an exception to that.

CormoranStrike · 02/01/2020 16:56

Herc is one of them in my opinion.

My favourite varies, but Zurich is right up there.
