Help! Keto or Slimming World

NameWithChange · 29/12/2019 18:32

I have managed to narrow it down to these 2. I can't do fasting days or cut out sugar etc. Just too complicated.

I did well on slimming world years ago but Keto has caught my eye.

Anyone tried both? Got good experience or any tips?

Thank you

Slimming world

TerrifiedandWorried · 29/12/2019 18:34

Because much easier to do

Boohooyouho · 29/12/2019 18:38

If you can’t/won’t cut out sugar then slimming world will be a much better fit.

Well keto truly effed up my thyroid. 4 years later I'm still under the endocrinologist.

That reason alone I'd say so

thismeansnothing · 29/12/2019 18:40

Sw

Lweji · 29/12/2019 18:40

By definition, you can't go keto if you won't cut sugar.

supercee · 29/12/2019 18:46

I suppose it's down to how carb sensitive you are.

Keto works for me as I've found I lose cutting out carbs/sugar, though I find it difficult as I bloody love carbs.

Slimming World didn't work for me despite me sticking to it to the letter. I couldn't get my head around being able to eat carbs/sugar and lose weight. Worked for loads of my colleagues though. I found SW easier to stick to.

Hoghgyni · 29/12/2019 19:05

I agree with thismeansnothing. A keto diet resulted in the worst kidney stones I have ever had, surgery to remove them and one permanently wedged which surgery can't shift. The consultant said it's a common issue.

Piixxiiee · 29/12/2019 19:07

thismeansnothing I'm looking at ketosis or low carb but have under active thyroid- so no go?

CatToddlerUprising · 29/12/2019 19:07

Depends what type of Keto you do. Or you could do Slimming World and not take the unlimited pasta, rice and other carbs too seriously

This is really helpful. Thank you all.

Is Keto a bit like Atlkinsons ?

I didn't realise you cut all sugar out too.

The thing I don't like with slimming world is all the diet products and sweetners

You have to cut out a lot of veg and fruit too unless you can get it under the 20g net carbs

TerrifiedandWorried · 29/12/2019 20:06

Slimming world has changed a lot in that respect. It's much better now.

trinity0097 · 29/12/2019 20:07

Keto, if you consider it a lifestyle change not a diet. I lost and have kept off a ton of weight on a low carb high fat diet. Also no weekly payouts to stand on scales! Look at the diet doctor website for the science behind it.

nearlyfinished1moreyear · 29/12/2019 20:12

I do keto, we'll done keto n prep for my holiday last year. I lost 1st 8lb in just over a month.

I was very strict. No sugar, no white foods so basically; potatoes, bread, rice, cereals. My go to foods were fish, chicken, broccoli, high fat Greek yoghurt and plenty other veg. Apples and bananas are a strict no no but if I was feeding hungry I would have the odd one. I also drank plenty water and the only exercise I done was the 1.5 hr walks my dog gets a day. I also drank coffee with full fat milk and upped my water intake.

I have just started again this week but I have only put on 8lb since I came back from holiday and that's been with some days totally pigging out Blush.

I'm in the same limbo so useful info thank you. Only thing pulling me to keto is that I'm prone to having diabetes as it runs it the family and had gd while pregnant. Sw worked for me before but I remember it being hard. I also did gd diet during pregnancy and remember being a bit more satisfied. It's interesting to read about keto casing health issues tho. Something to consider!

BarbaraofSeville · 02/01/2020 17:45

he thing I don't like with slimming world is all the diet products and sweetners

Well that's good because slimming world is nothing like that at all Hmm, just unlimited fruit, veg, pulses, eggs, lean protein, fat free dairy and limited amounts of bread, cheese and junk like cake, chocolate, crisps, alcohol etc.

Fourmagpies · 02/01/2020 18:50

Have a look at James Smith Academy. Eat proper normal food but in calorie deficit. No need to give up sugar, bread or anything else.

TiddyTid · 02/01/2020 19:13

Keto does work but you must do it properly. It's not really a diet, more like a way of eating and it is not easy either. You must ensure you have enough magnesium, water and electrolytes otherwise you'll feel rubbish but get it right and you can feel great on it.

You tend to lose interest in sugar on Keto and fasting is easy as you end up eating inky when hungry which isn't as often as we think it is.

I'm saying this as a lazy Keto. The full on Keto is too much for me.

Looneytune253 · 02/01/2020 19:29

Keto is amazing (only thing that's ever worked well with me) but I'm concerned you can't cut out sugar or fast. Both of which are a huge part of Keto. In fact it's defo cutting out sugar lol you can't have any. This works tho as it removes the cravings you get from eating sugar.

venusandmars · 02/01/2020 20:01

It's interesting to read about keto causing health issues tho

All you've read is that a couple of people who were on a keto diet also had health issues. That's a long way from being caused by keto (or any other way of eating).

But a low carb / keto diet is definitely not for you if you can't cut out sugar.

Hoghgyni · 02/01/2020 20:08

My renal consultant would disagree with you Venus & I think they are better qualified to comment. The high proportion of protein in a keto diet is a known risk in developing kidney stones.

nearlyfinished1moreyear · 02/01/2020 20:26

The protein content while doing keto isn't as high as the fat. That's why you have to drink plenty of water to balance electrolytes and flush out your system.

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/01/2020 20:27

Keto for me because things like slimming world make me hungry. And there's a low carb boot camp staring on the 13th.

No sugar though.

snowone · 02/01/2020 20:36

Neither!

Have a look on internet / Facebook / Twitter / Instagram for a group called Team RH fitness.

Their motto is very simple.....

Eat less, move more.

The only way to lose weight is to be in a calorie deficit. You don't need SW, WW, Atkins, Keto or any other diet to do that!
