Just as the title says.

If you're working today, what is it that you do for a living?

I work for a church! We have one big celebratory morning service and then I'm on annual leave Xmas Smile

ODFOkaren · 25/12/2019 07:47

Work in a Specialist care home. I got the short straw so have just arrived for a 13 hour shift, 8am - 9pm, then working 12 hour shift Boxing Day night. It’s shit, minimum wage and I’ve been called a wanker and kicked already. I’m hiding in the staff area until the last possible second. Last year I worked Boxing Day night and I got a hot cup of gravy chucked at me when I walked in the door so god knows what today will hold. Happy Xmas.

ODFOkaren · 25/12/2019 07:48

And I am so ill but to add insult to unjustly we don’t get sick pay so can’t afford not to come in.

lellikelly2 · 25/12/2019 07:52

Oh no @ODFOkaren that sound awful

Busy day for you! Took DC to crib service yesterday, the church was rammed @NickMarlow

I’m a vicar!

chesterfuckingdrorrs · 25/12/2019 07:53

Custody officer for the police. Its seriously grim especially over Christmas

Frogsandsheep · 25/12/2019 07:56

I love Christmas but in a 24 hour period I’ll have shook over 1500 hands and said merry Christmas 1500 times and it’s rather exhausting - my face aches from smiling Grin Shock

stuckinthemiddlewithtwats · 25/12/2019 07:57

@ODFOkaren I feel for you - my mum worked in a specialist care home for men with dementia etc. She used to come home covered in bruises every day. There were several incidences of attempted rape and nothing was done because 'they weren't in their right minds'. The staff had zero support from management and told they had to deal with patients singly rather than in pairs which would have minimised the risk in part. What was even worse is that she wasn't even a carer - she worked in the laundry and had no caring qualifications or training yet was forced to work with patients because they were short staffed. She got landed with every Xmas and new year shift too.
Hope everything goes as well as it can today for you Xmas Smile

TwinsTrollsAndHunz · 25/12/2019 07:59

I was a nurse until summer this year and worked every Christmas since I qualified and as a student nurse. This is my first year at home, it’s a bit weird but wonderful.

All the very, very best to those working over the Christmas period. Whatever you do for a living. Xmas Smile

ODFOkaren · 25/12/2019 07:59

Thank you - the people living here are young and very strong so it’s a lot worse than working with elderly residents.

Ciderandskatesdontmix · 25/12/2019 08:32

I work at a hotel behind the bar. I actually offered to work as my oldest 2 are with their dad today,so we'll be having our Christmas tomorrow. It's a 6 hour shift with double pay so I really can't complain!

MaudebeGonne · 25/12/2019 08:40

I'm a midwife on a mixed antenatal/postnatal ward. In from 12 til 20.30. and 13 hours tomorrow.

Santa has been, and I'm just about to start getting ready do I can bring my husband and children to my MILs for the couple of days so my working doesn't impact them too much.

It's part of the job, and while I don't love being away from my children, I love the job.

vicarlady · 25/12/2019 08:44

I'm a vicar too! Two services this morning

lellikelly2 · 25/12/2019 08:45

@Ciderandskatesdontmix I used to work in hospitality and always offered to work Christmas - like you say it was double pay! Couldn't say no to that!

Vicars wife here! (I have my own proper job too) So service and Christmas dinners for 50 people who would otherwise be on their own. Technically I’m sort of doing voluntary work I guess! 😂

Ginfordinner · 25/12/2019 08:49

Thank you to all of you.

Am currently staying in a hotel so that we can visit family for Christmas. I am so grateful to the staff working over Christmas in order for us to be able to do this.

Merry Christmas everyone.

BathTangle · 25/12/2019 08:51

From the bottom of my heart, thank you to all of you Wine Brew CakeFlowersGin as appropriate.

mrbob · 25/12/2019 08:51

GrannyBags · 25/12/2019 09:08

I work for the Church. Morning service in a bit then Parish Christmas Lunch for 75. Didn’t get to bed till 1.30 after Midnight Mass so a bit bleary eyed this morning!

Chilli21 · 25/12/2019 09:30

I used to work in a 999 ambulance call centre; Christmas was very stressful! My DD works at our local airport in service and maintenance, she’s working the early shift, there are plenty of flights today.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Veronicat · 25/12/2019 09:35

Veterinary . Those cows won't calves themselves! And we have a French Bulldog due pups which will more than likely be a C-section. Plus dogs eating chocolates, tinsel, mince pies...

PhoenixReincarnated · 25/12/2019 10:29

Support worker.

I did volunteer to do the afternoon/sleep/morning shift because it means I get new year off. I knew I'd have a better chance of new year off than Christmas.

EntirelyAnonymised · 25/12/2019 11:18

You are all marvellous.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 25/12/2019 11:35

Not any more but I used to be bar staff and worked Christmas/new year. Christmas day was great, everyone was in a good mood and nearly everyone bought us drinks/left big tips.
