Bar Humbug? Really?

I've seen this four times now. People actually think Dickens bestowed us with the grumpy seasonal catchphrase 'bar humbug'.

What do these people think bar means? Or humbug, for that matter?

It’s DEFIANTLY the same people who think it’s ‘Chester drawers’ Xmas Grin

LonginesPrime · 24/12/2019 08:52

It's a cool name for a Christmas pop up venue though.

MorrisZapp · 24/12/2019 08:53

Ooh yes, perfect name for a pop up gluwein stand 👌

It's not like me to be so charitable with regards the English Language.

But, as it's the season of goodwill and all that, predictive text and autocorrect really do have a lot to answer for!

jaggynettle · 24/12/2019 09:02

@Nottobesoldseparately there will be reaper cushions for sure!

CigarsofthePharoahs · 24/12/2019 09:04

It's the antithesis. Bar all humbugs!

AuntieStella · 24/12/2019 09:09

It would be a good name for a pop up pub Wine

Pegase · 24/12/2019 09:18

Although *glühwein

JigsawsAreInPieces · 24/12/2019 09:20

Love the idea of a pop-up pub! Themed so it was completely Christmas free for anyone feeling overwhelmed and just wanting a quiet drink without the place being festooned with Christmas decorations and Last Christmas blaring! Grin

Dragons Den, here I come! 😂

sueelleker · 24/12/2019 10:40

There is an annual Christmas thread on AbeBooks that they call Bar Humbug though. It's a virtual bar.

DGRossetti · 24/12/2019 11:03

Surely it's been like that since the gecko ?

PaulRobinsonsWoodenLeg · 24/12/2019 11:12

I think it sounds better as Hah Bumhug, per-say

AlaskaElfForGin · 24/12/2019 11:15

Celebelly · 24/12/2019 11:17

ProseccoSupernova · 24/12/2019 11:22

Celebelly doh, silly me!! Xmas Wink

SunshineAngel · 24/12/2019 11:26

If you think about it, it's a pretty strange phrase. Why say humbug? And given then "bah" is more a representation of a sound of exasperation than an actual word, then does it really matter - hugely - how it's spelt?

I'm a professional proofreader, editor and writer, and trust me, there are many more spelling sins to be concerned about than this one.

SunshineAngel · 24/12/2019 11:26

*Given that.

I'm off duty ;).

SenecaFalls · 24/12/2019 11:27

Bar humbug
Draw for drawer or vice versa

Mistakes rhotic speakers never make. Smile

Celebelly · 24/12/2019 11:36

My favourite is 'walla'. I had a friend who kept using it and it took me ages to work our she meant 'voila'! I can well understand that one as if you've never seen it written, it does sound like 'walla'!

Never mind this 'off duty' nonsense @SunshineAngel, spill ... Grin
