Bar Humbug? Really?

I've seen this four times now. People actually think Dickens bestowed us with the grumpy seasonal catchphrase 'bar humbug'.

What do these people think bar means? Or humbug, for that matter?

Why say humbug?

I hate things like this.

Seen on another thread just today was someone pointing their wheels to the curb! It’s kerb!

And DH, every single time you day literally, it isn’t; you mean virtually, or almost.

SenecaFalls · 24/12/2019 13:03

But "curb" is not wrong.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 24/12/2019 13:14

Is it "swings and roundabouts " or "swings in roundabouts?".

And what does it mean?!

I genuinely don't know so tend to alternate each time I (rarely!) use it so to stay off the radar of pedantic old gits like myself! Wink

CaptainMyCaptain · 24/12/2019 13:23

Swings and roundabouts. I think the longer, original version is 'sometimes you win on the swings sometimes you win on the roundabouts'. Despite neither of those things being competitive.

PatchworkElmer · 24/12/2019 13:30

“Ching ching”

NoHummus · 24/12/2019 13:34

since the gecko Grin
Haven't seen that one before!

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 24/12/2019 13:35

Very unreasonable op. They are clearly all dyslexic.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 24/12/2019 13:37

Thanks Captain!

I have been listening to Radio 2 this morning and during a phone in, a dancer from Spearmint Rhino (who thinks lap dancing is a positive force in improving attitudes to body image amongst women, but that’s a whole other issue) proclaimed “Mental health is rifle nowadays!”

I think she meant that poor mental health is rife.

AShaveAndAHarecutHalfPrice · 24/12/2019 13:42

@SenecaFalls in the UK it is kerb

I know that "kerb" is British English. But this thread is about mistakes. It's not wrong. Also there are quite a few North Americans on MN.

DGRossetti · 24/12/2019 16:58

A lot of these mistakes are driven by spellcheckers, which are proof extant that we are nowhere near the level of "AI" people who want you to spend your money on it would have you believe.

There's also a circularity where once a mistaken phrase becomes extant, spell/grammar checkers then offer the mistaken phrase with the correct original making ...

I agree DGRossetti and I think some of the extremes you see could also be voice activated cock ups.

DGRossetti · 24/12/2019 17:13

DW is partially sighted (visually "fucked" as she'd say) and (literally Grin) cannot put into words how much she hates voice input. Again, if we are in a world of so called "AI", then it certainly isn't being applied to anything useful. Although DB (whose PHd was in AI) has said he uses it to do his expenses if he has time to check them afterwards ....
