What time would you do food shop tomorrow?

Need to do food shop tomorrow, couldn’t do it any early because of work and other things we’ve had on. Problem is, Asda opens at 5am. Do I go then? No scan and shop that early so will have to tot up total on way round (budget to keep an eye on), or do I go later like 10-11am with scan and shop? What tends to happen round here is it’s really busy early and quietens down later on. I just can’t decide! Help!

Can’t go late night as dp taking grandparents airport. Got my list written will brave early morning. Not even going for Xmas specific things just need a normal shop and couldn’t do the normal massive monthly haul before pay day. Tight month is December

I went to Sainsburys yesterday mid morning for main shopping and it was quiet. I went to M&S this morning for nice bits arriving at 10.35 (it opened at 10.30). All the trollies had gone there were already so many people there.

KilljoysDutch · 22/12/2019 15:49

Note how everyone is posting that they're going early - which means you shouldn't if you want to avoid crowds.

HopefulFor2020 · 22/12/2019 15:50

I tend to a click and collect as I can't trust myself in the shop - I'm too impulsive. As it's almost definitely too late for that now I'd suggest (because you're on a budget) add stuff to a shopping list on the app and use that as your shopping list as you go round. That way you know how much it should come to and can delete it as you pick it up and it's only if you have to get something 'off list' that you need to keep track of for the budget.

I also always manage to forget shopping lists but somehow never my phone so it keeps my list safely with me

Depending on how much you’re going to buy, try parking outside of the supermarket car park so you won’t get caught in traffic.

There’s a retail park near us with the worst system and is always clogged with parking. I leave dh in the pub and walk to the retail park, do my shopping, throw it into the boot and drag dh out of the pub.

pontiouspilates · 22/12/2019 15:52

I went at 10.30am today, parked slightly away from supermarket, walked in and got everything. I've just seen DD open my smoked salmon to put in her bagel, so looks like I'll have to pop out again tomorrow!

DivisionBelles · 22/12/2019 16:01

We were in Aldi at 10am this morning. Was busy, but not hellishly so. Tesco, over the road on the other hand was rammed.

Kobrakid · 22/12/2019 16:03

No other parking nearby and I always have a list and stick to it. Think it might get busy 6 onwards was surprised to see it open from 5

I'm a 5am shopper and I find it busy but not overwhelming. I'm going tomorrow morning at 5 as I will then be going to work all day and I dont fancy having to tackle it later on in the day.

I find it one of the nicer shops I do during the year too. Everyone just seems happy and friendly. A bit of arent we mad doing it at this time and a bit of all in it together type of attitude.

TodaysFishIsTroutALaCreme · 22/12/2019 16:08

And the reason I leave it so "late" is because I want food with plenty of date and so I don't have to go again until the new year.

noblegiraffe · 22/12/2019 16:09

I went today at lunchtime and it wasn’t that bad at all. The checkout people said it had been horrendous earlier, so I’d come at a good time.

danni0509 · 22/12/2019 16:10

I went to Tesco at 9 this morning by 9.30 it was wild! I would go as early as possible

MrsG010814 · 22/12/2019 16:14

I would go for 5am. I had to go to asda this afternoon after running out of calpol for ds and it was rammed. Could barely get round then que went all the way up the aisle at every check out. Good luck!

cantfindname · 22/12/2019 16:19

I shopped Friday and got in a queue at 9am behind an elderly lady. From her conversation with the check out lady it was just her and her equally elderly OH for Christmas Day. She managed to spend a shade over £180!!!

I missed the main part of her loading but would love to know how she spent so much for just two. Think a lot of drink may have been involved.

dottiedodah · 22/12/2019 16:22

Aiming for 8am here .Will be still quite busy I expect .Went Friday to M and S, last minute presents ,busy at 9.00 am ! yesterday S/B for normal week shop and last again to Sainsburys tomorrow, for fresh turkey ,trimmings etc (need a bigger fridge I think!) After that, feet up and doggy Xmas party Tues morn!

Yubaba · 22/12/2019 16:24

I’m working tomorrow, unfortunately it’s in Tesco and I’m dreading it! (The car park is really badly designed and it’s carnage every year)
It’s going to be fucking awful, please remember to be nice to the staff Wink

CurlyhairedAssassin · 22/12/2019 16:27

Whenever I’ve been early morning it’s been horrendous. We always go around 9pm and it’s usually quiet and lovely.

CactusAndCacti · 22/12/2019 16:29

9.23am. All the early birds will have gone and not quite on the "I'll go in the morning" troops.

I have never actually tried out this theory. My shopping came yesterday, though in some moment of foolishness I have booked an opticians appointment for DD at 10am tomorrow at the local shopping centre.

GnomeDePlume · 22/12/2019 16:39

Queueing to get into Tesco at 3pm today. Also major queue to get into Lidl. Nothing says Christmas present panic like an impulse purchase chainsaw from the central aisle of mystery!

SymphonyofShadows · 22/12/2019 16:44

Stupidly booked my M&S slot for 11am today. I got there really early to park and sat in the car watching a queue form. It’s next to a Sainsburys and the car park was rammed. Got the food order fairly painlessly, but the M&S foodhall was just trolley gridlock. I gave up with what I was going to buy, DH can get it in Tesco Metro or the local Co-op.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/12/2019 16:48

Waitrose was practically empty at lunchtime today. M&S busy in the vege aisle but otherwise fine, and no queue at all. Tomorrow I think I'd want to be there as soon as it opens.

kitk · 22/12/2019 16:56

We went last night at 8pm and it was actually fine for the most part. Like a normal busy time on a Saturday but with a few more inconsiderate gits parking their trolley diagonally across an aisle while they stopped to chat etc. Not much worse than a usual shop tho

ICouldBeVotingTactically · 22/12/2019 16:58

Got some bits 'n' bobs in Morrisons yesterday about 7pm - wasn't busy.

Ditto Waitrose this morning, about 10:00.

Going to Tesco tomorrow about 9-10 am, but it's open 24-hours so I hope it's not too bad.

lilgreen · 22/12/2019 17:01

Oh and after my Aldi food shop yesterday, I stopped by Waitrose today at 1pm for some canapés and got parked right by the door and it was really pleasant, not overcrowded at all.

Kobrakid · 22/12/2019 17:19

5am it is! Will report back luckily McDonald’s drive thru next door so might have a sneaky breakfast on way home before dp and dd get up!
