Bread vs sausagemeat stuffing?

Which do you have?

Boring question but I'm curious to know which type will be on your plate this Christmas.

I'm in the sausage meat camp.

DM does both, so no arguments

Sn0tnose · 21/12/2019 20:17

Both. I prefer the bread one though.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 21/12/2019 20:20

I do a sage and onion bread stuffing with sausagemeat in it, so BOTH!!

f00k · 21/12/2019 20:38

I make a bacon & cranberries sausagemeat stuffing.

BlackboardMonitorVimes · 21/12/2019 20:41

I do a mix too, bread and sausage meat.

TheCrookedHorse · 21/12/2019 20:53

Why have I never thought of doing a mix before? It sounds so good.

Both?

My mum used to make a really nice, herby stuffing with breadcrumbs but also put sausage meat in the bird. I've tended to do the same over the years. Yum.

IHaveBrilloHair · 21/12/2019 22:02

I do stuffing which is sausagemeat, chicken livers, onion, apple, sage and breadcrumbs, an egg to bind it.
It's shaped into chipolata sized pieces and wrapped in smoked, streaky bacon.
It's a tradition in our house, we call it, " murderers stuffing".

ItFigures · 21/12/2019 22:05

Really dislike sausage meat stuffing (I love sausage so don’t my dislike of it). Bread all the way for me

DramaAlpaca · 21/12/2019 22:05

Homemade sage & onion made with breadcrumbs in our house.

I've never had sausagemeat stuffing but I imagine it would be very rich.

Gotthetshirt23 · 21/12/2019 22:05

Both

Skyrain · 21/12/2019 22:05

Oatmeal stuffing for me (Scottish)

glasshouse · 21/12/2019 22:14

What about potato stuffing? Mash, herbs, onions, garlic and sausagemeat - heavenly.

KittenVsXmastree · 21/12/2019 22:14

Both (but no pigs in blankets.. )

LadyCordeliaVorkosigan · 21/12/2019 22:16

Both, plus chestnut stuffing (it's nuts and a bit of meat holding it together).

IHaveBrilloHair · 21/12/2019 22:17

Skyrain
Like skirlie?
We love that.

lifeisgoodagain · 21/12/2019 22:17

I use a pack of normal sage and onion reconstituted mixed with equal amounts of sausage meat then add fresh cranberries and a teaspoon cinnamon. It's a good hack

Miscella · 21/12/2019 22:46

Both, one either end of the turkey- bread one in the main cavity.

Current advice is not to stuff the cavity, I do but am careful to leave a gap and also use a digital meat thermometer so know it has reached the correct temperature. The two stuffings flavor the bird and also the juices, makes delicious gravy. Looking forward to Christmas dinner....and all the leftovers!

safariboot · 22/12/2019 00:06

Stuffing has always been bready for us.

I was supposed to be not serving pork for this year's Christmas, so I rejected so many fancy roasts because they were wrapped in bacon, then ended up buying one that's stuffed with bloody sausage meat! So as far as I'm concerned the stuff can burn in heck.

SpoonBlender · 22/12/2019 00:25

All three here, chestnut too. Doing sausage and apricot this year I think.

CrowleysBentley · 22/12/2019 05:26

I make a chestnut sausage meat stuffing, from my nan's recipe. Not keen on bread stuffing.

pumpandthump · 22/12/2019 05:35

What's bread stuffing?

I've only had sausage meat or oat based.

JoyceJames · 22/12/2019 05:40

You really shouldn't put stuffing in the turkey cavity. It can be unsafe, as the bird will always cook before the stuffing.

I like both or either, but cooked separately.

Dozer · 22/12/2019 05:42

The best is mealie pudding - oatmeal, pepper and lard!

wibdib · 22/12/2019 06:05

Breadcrumbs, butter and thyme make the bestest stuffing ever. Maybe a little chopped parsley and/or finely chopped onion if cooking out of the bird (not in the cavity anymore, I know!) for a bit of extra moisture and flavour.

This was my mither’s recipe and we all loved it. My dad’s mum was firmly in the sausage meat stuffing camp so would bring a tray if it with her when she came to Christmas lunch - but mum’s stuffing always went first and everyone (apart from nan!) would be raving about it (big gathering; more than just immediate family) whereas very few people wanted sausage meat stuffing.

So bread stuffing was definitely the winner over sausage meat stuffing. However that very definitely doesn’t include Paxo as an equal edible bread stuffing alternative - that stuff is grim.
