What do you do on boxing day? Is it a special day?

Just wondering what people do on boxing day. I feel like everyone is so busy throughout the year we try to make the absolute most of Christmas.

So we do lots of fun Christmas things before Christmas and then try to make the time really special. So I like boxing day to feel like a special day in the same way Christmas day is. But my family seem to treat it like any other day, they often spend ages at the sales. So just wonder what other people do and how you think of it.

We generally have extra people at our house and cook a nice meal so it’s an extension of Christmas really.

Just read my op back. I can only apologise for the number of times if used so! I'm irritating myself!

We visit the family members we didn't see on Christmas Day.

ExpletiveFairylighted · 20/12/2019 16:35

When I was single going to the football with friends was my top choice too.

AuntieMarys · 20/12/2019 16:35

We have a 7 mile walk planned. Then back for a veggie thai curry.

Cloudyyy · 20/12/2019 16:42

We usually go to the beach for a walk with the extended family. Blows the cobwebs away!

Bluntness100 · 20/12/2019 16:46

There is a big group of us for crimbo and everyone staying till the 27th. Boxing Day will be lots of games, lots of booze, sweet treats like home made fudge and honey comb and, baked Camembert for lunch and turkey curry for dinner. Basically just eating, drinking, and having fun.

It’s my dad’s birthday so we try to make it a special day. Everyone comes to my house again and we have a lovely buffet with leftovers, smoked salmon, potato salad and a cheese board. Then we play family board games

Not much through the day then walk to town for Panto in the evening :)

elQuintoConyo · 20/12/2019 16:47

We have a big lunch with friends, their house or ours, to celebrate St Stephens. It's really lovely and we live in the same town, so just a 20 minute walk. Our children are all friends, even though different ages. It's actually really relaxing.

We stay away from the sales as I don't think retail workers should have to go back to work so soon after xmas just so people spend more. Some poor sod wants to be with their DC not serving coffee.

Ginfordinner · 20/12/2019 16:48

This year will be the four to five hour drive home from visiting family.

haggisaggis · 20/12/2019 16:48

I prefer Boxing Day to Christmas Day - all the cooking is done and the fridge is full. Time to check over presents properly, go for a walk with the dog, have a glass of wine with lunch... I love it because it's such a chilled day.

beela · 20/12/2019 16:51

Pyjama day! We all stay in our pjs all day and play with Christmas presents and don't try to do any jobs or anything.

If we do get a bit of cabin fever and need to go out (ds is 9 now but he's still like a small puppy who needs exercising regularly) we just put our coats on over pjs and go for a walk. The dc love it almost as much as Christmas day Smile

My2ndfavouriteFword · 20/12/2019 16:51

I think a walk is nice. We sometimes do that. I agree it's great because the fridge is full!

I refuse to leave the house on Boxing Day. DH goes to the sales with his brother. I like to lie in, read and watch tv.

Twospaniels · 20/12/2019 16:53

When I was a child it was like another Christmas day, as my paternal grandparents came on christmas day and maternal grandad came on boxing day.

Nowadays we’re usually busy with hobbies on boxing day.

fussychica · 20/12/2019 16:55

We are doing Christmas Day on Boxing Day this year as our son's partner is unable to come to us on Christmas Day. She can't stay long, unfortunately, as she is on shift again on 28th, she's a nurse.

SoftBlocks · 20/12/2019 16:57

Eat, watch telly, go for a walk, read and feel slightly anticlimactic.

pumpkinpie01 · 20/12/2019 16:58

We see the family we didn't see on Christmas Day - big buffet at mine , it's nosier and messier than Christmas Day .

Mrsjayy · 20/12/2019 17:00

We catch up on our Tv and splodge I think eldest Dd is comi g for dinner she is working Christmas day.

ShinyRuby · 20/12/2019 17:01

We always used to have a big meal with dh's extended family with games, drinks etc. I used to love it as my family weren't that way inclined. One by one people lost interest & preferred going to the sales instead, I held off for years but now it just doesn't seem like such a special day anymore.
I'll probably go to the sales (still shocked at how busy it is) & do a tea for anyone who wants to drop by later.

DownToTheSeaAgain · 20/12/2019 17:01

We all do exactly what we (individually) want. It's glorious.

EmmiJay · 20/12/2019 17:01

Westfield and lunch.
