What do you do on boxing day? Is it a special day?

Just wondering what people do on boxing day. I feel like everyone is so busy throughout the year we try to make the absolute most of Christmas.

So we do lots of fun Christmas things before Christmas and then try to make the time really special. So I like boxing day to feel like a special day in the same way Christmas day is. But my family seem to treat it like any other day, they often spend ages at the sales. So just wonder what other people do and how you think of it.

I agree with the sales it doesn't seem that special a day.

It’s usually my favourite day. We go out early for a long walk at an NT place and then have a cup of tea and cheese on toast at the outdoor cafe. Then back home for the DC to properly enjoy their new toys before Christmas sandwiches and a film.

This year we’re at my mum’s on Boxing Day, so we’ll probably do my Boxing Day the day after that.

I’m working Christmas Day so I am really looking forward to having Boxing Day off.
I am planning on not leaving the house, eating some lovely food and just enjoying being home with the dc.

Spend the morning on a steam train ride (mince pie special), then a couple of hours at the sales.

CherryPavlova · 20/12/2019 17:14

We walk the dog as a family then do lunch at our club. Then home to cook, as we do a drinks party in the evening.

SingingGoldfinch · 20/12/2019 17:18

We always have a morning walk followed by cold turkey and ham, bubble and squeak and pickles. It's one of my favourite meals of the year!

TimeforanotherChange · 20/12/2019 17:21

Absolutely nothing. I will have cooked for about 17 of us the day before, older DC used to visit their dad on Boxing Day; they don't bother now generally. I've still got about 10 folks staying (family) and I will cook a large ham and make turkey soup for lunch. Tea is cold ham/turkey salad and I will probably not get dressed all day but will lie on sofa eating chocolate and reading.

I feel no obligation to entertain anyone after cooking the day before Grin. DCs usually play board games/watch videos.

Work usually Xmas Sad

Bickles · 20/12/2019 17:32

Nothing. Find places for Christmas presents, stay in PJs, eat what we want, play with new things and watch films. It’s lovely.

Lovemusic33 · 20/12/2019 17:32

Sometimes we drive to the coast for a walk along the beach, this year we might be visiting family (I would rather go to the coast). I hate the idea of going to the sales, I don’t like the fact shops are open on Boxing Day as people should be spending time with their families. It think it should be a day for relaxing with family, going for a walk and eating left over turkey.

Parker231 · 20/12/2019 17:38

We’ve 16 staying for the week but on Boxing Day I’m doing nothing. Staying in my PJ’s all day. Everyone knows where the kitchen is so can feed themselves when they want.

BaubleTheLumpOfCoal · 20/12/2019 17:39

We're all at the pub this year I think (there's so many of us together on Boxing Day that we just wont fit into anyone's house!)

BestIsWest · 20/12/2019 17:44

Stay in pyjamas, eat leftovers and play with all our presents. Try out any new bath stuff. Read new books. Play board games. We may go for a walk. Favourite day of the year.

HoldMyLobster · 20/12/2019 17:45

It's not a public holiday here, so a lot of people go back to work.

I'm going to see the doctor on the 26th for my annual physical.

Bombaybunty · 20/12/2019 17:45

It's better than Christmas Day. We tend to do the family thing on Christmas Day, teetotal MIL, FIL who only talks about himself....... Both my parents have died.

On Boxing Day we always go to a friend's house where we start with a dog walk. Then we drink too much, eat left overs and play pissed Pictionary. Perfection!

My2ndfavouriteFword · 20/12/2019 17:54

I must admit I'm feeling a little jealous of all of the big family hang outs. Even doing nothing. I've just had a bit of a sad conversation with my mum about Christmas plans (another thread I know!)

Laze around, enjoy presents (I always start on one of my new books!), maybe go for a walk. If there’s lots of us we sometimes do a quiz.

WhoWants2Know · 20/12/2019 18:11

We make things out of all the cardboard boxes that presents have been posted in.

I8toys · 20/12/2019 18:38

Go on holiday. Last year was Athens, this year is Venice.

Bogiesaremyonlyfriend · 20/12/2019 18:44

Yes definately another Christmas day. Dds want to save some presents to open and I'll make a pie with leftovers. Some years we have seen family but this year they are all coming to us for Christmas day. Hoping for a chilled out day at home

Stockmarketup · 20/12/2019 18:46

I’ll be working Xmas Sad

IndieTara · 20/12/2019 18:49

DD spends Boxing Day with her dad so I get to collapse!

SpaceCadet4000 · 20/12/2019 18:50

I live in the US now where it isn't a thing. In an ideal world, DH would have had vacation days left to take it off and we'd have gone to the aquarium, zoo or cinema.

In reality, his vacation days are all gone and we're moving house on 30th so I'll be literally boxing all our possession up.

Strictly1972 · 20/12/2019 18:52

We visit my DF. Always had Boxing Day with him since my parents divorced when I was young & it’s just stuck. He invites extended family too so it’s nice.

AppleKatie · 20/12/2019 18:55

It’s a family day for us so big lunch (about 16 at the last count), presents exchanged with those we haven’t seen the day before, board games, perhaps a walk.
