What do you do on boxing day? Is it a special day?

Just wondering what people do on boxing day. I feel like everyone is so busy throughout the year we try to make the absolute most of Christmas.

So we do lots of fun Christmas things before Christmas and then try to make the time really special. So I like boxing day to feel like a special day in the same way Christmas day is. But my family seem to treat it like any other day, they often spend ages at the sales. So just wonder what other people do and how you think of it.

Leftover food, go to one of the local villages and perhaps go inside the local church sightseeing.

A walk on the beach and a buffet of pimped-up leftovers

More eating more drinking and more being merry. Most definitely NO shopping. Not my idea of festive fun!

We’ll probably head to the beach or the woods to run the kids out but lots of lovely family time planned.

I really love Boxing Day. Christmas Day is fun but we always host so it involves cooking and clearing up and just generally hosting.
Boxing Day involves comfy tracksuit bottoms, leftovers, Christmas tv, playing games and reading Xmas books.

We repeat Christmas Day, but someone else cooks.

For us it’s a special day, we will have steak with real chips and the accompaniments. There’s usually about 15-20 of us. We will normally have board games. I used to go out in the evening for drinks but nowadays it’s drinks at home as we have a toddler.

Football and a walk along the seafront, it's become a tradition.

I agree, I don't understand how people can face shopping. The previous day, for most people, involved lots of gifts of new stuff. The thought of going out to acquire more new stuff on boxing day is beyond me.

Each to their own though, I am sure there are things that I do that other people think is bonkers Xmas Smile

Cook a breakfast, say goodbye to guests and then sprawl on the couch with a book and lots of treats. Food will be leftover meats, cheeses, pickles and bread. Probably have a snooze on the sofa and watch whatever shit Is on tv.

We used to do a second Christmas day for the in laws, but it was just too hectic having two full on hosting days in a row. So that's put off until the 27th and we have a chilled day, let the kids play with their new toys as much as they want, a nice long walk and then back home for lovely food and some wine.

PJ day! I cook a big ham and we have lovely ham and coleslaw muffins and lots of cheese and crackers. We then lounge around on the sofa perusing the online sales and drinking Baileys. Boxing Day is my favourite!

I must be an oddity on MN because I really, really don't like spending the day in my nightwear. I have comfy, slobbing about clothes, but not pyjamas. I feel unmotivated and like the day hasn't begun if I don't get dressed.

VillageFete · 21/12/2019 09:04

Lazy morning, then for a nice walk - DD will ride her new bike through the village and DS will be all wrapped up in his pram.

Graze on chocolate, pastries, coffee, Bucks fizz. Watch The Snowman and Father Christmas AGAIN.

At 5pm meet the extended family at a Chinese restaurant for some cocktails and a banquet Xmas Smile

It's changed over the years. When the boys were younger we used to go to a big family get together where they could see their cousins.
Then it moved onto DH and the lads playing in a Scout football match while I had a couple of hours peace and quiet.
Ds1's 1st job was as a chef so he often worked and DS2 revised for GCSEs and A Levels.
This year is different again as DS2 is in Australia.
I'm hoping for a jigsaw as I find them the perfect way to unwind. My MiL usually gets one too and we do a swap once we've done our own.

Fishcakey · 21/12/2019 11:33

DS goes to his Dads so DH and I are slobbing and eating cheese. I used to host the wider family but nobody ever takes their turn so I stopped.
