The nasal flu vaccine - side effects?

olivertwistwantsmore · 18/12/2019 08:36

Has anyone's dc had the nasal spray vaccine? What side effects have your dc had?

Someone on another thread said that D&V was a side effect of the vaccine but I have searched online and can't see this anywhere.

DC and I due to have vaccine (them spray, me injection) this week and family are coming soon after.

Any advice would be fab. Thanks.

Just a bit of a snotty nose for the day.

Here’s a link to the patient info leaflet for the nasal flu spray for this flu season.

www.medicines.org.uk/emc/files/pil.3296.pdf

My DS has it and had a reduction in appetite for a day or so but was completely unbothered by it, just didn’t fancy eating much.

olivertwistwantsmore · 18/12/2019 09:48

Thanks, @QuestionableMushroom - that's v helpful!

I wish people wouldn't spout nonsense and spread lies about stuff like this - it could stop people taking up the vaccine.

No side effects at all from my children.

inwood · 18/12/2019 09:52

None at all

GaraMedouar · 18/12/2019 09:55

No major side effects - was the first year DD has had it - headache and snotty nose, but I had a bad cold anyway so it may well be that DD just caught my cold anyway and not from the nasal spray.

VenusClapTrap · 18/12/2019 09:55

Mine said it made them sneeze...

Seriously, give them the vaccine. I was hospitalised with a serious case of flu last week and neither of my dc caught it from me. I was very glad they’d had the vaccine. Next year I’ll be making damn sure I get it too.

DaffodilsAreMyFav · 18/12/2019 09:55

Zero side effects for my DD.

Lifeoverhaul · 18/12/2019 10:51

I'm a teacher and I get ill within a few days of my classes having the flu vaccine every year. Probably coincidence as there are more bugs around in the winter but it's EVERY year.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 18/12/2019 11:34

Eldest child - none at all. He's 9 and had actually forgotten he'd had it by the end of school
Youngest - very runny nose. Not sure if this is related though as he developed a full cold two days later, so probably just a coincidence.

YappityYapYap · 18/12/2019 11:40

None really, a snotty nose for a day. My DS gets croup every year with the flu without fail but this year he hasn't and it's the first time he's had the nasal spray as he's 3. Coincidence? I think it does work and well worth getting

Pinkflipflop85 · 18/12/2019 11:41

My son was fine.

2020BetterBeBetter · 18/12/2019 11:42

Last year DD1 had a bit of a temperature at bedtime but nothing a cuddle did sort out. This year no reaction for either DD1 or DD2.

CoraPirbright · 18/12/2019 12:01

Gah! I want my kids to have it but they are not eligible on the NHS (too old, no health issues). Their schools aren’t doing it & I would be delighted to pay for it but no pharmacy near us has any stock. They are too young for the pharmacist to jab so what the hell am I supposed to do?Confused

BercowsFestiveFlamingo · 18/12/2019 12:06

None for any of the 3 children anytime they've had it.

olivertwistwantsmore · 18/12/2019 13:25

Great - thanks all. @Lifeoverhaul - the nasal vaccine sheds virus for a couple of days so it could be that making you ill. Are you immunosuppressed?

For the first time this year mine had side effects: headache, lethargy, temperature and loss of appetite. Then went and had the bloomin flu a few weeks later!

rosewils · 18/12/2019 13:46

Coughing
Runny nose
Wheezing
Temperature of 39.8
Lethargic

Needless to say we didn't give it this year.

RCC18 · 18/12/2019 13:47

Mine had a slight cold and bad earache a couple of days later which lasted 2 hours. Not sure if its related or coincidence.

Evilmorty · 18/12/2019 13:52

Eldest no side effects at all. Middle one, I would never have it done again. Developed a mini flu with 38.9 temps which went on for a week, now won’t sleep on his own, wakes frequently, no one has slept in 3 weeks, it’s the busiest time of the year and we are all exhausted.

Bansku19 · 18/12/2019 13:56

Dc didn't get any side effects. I got very tired and the injection area was sore for several days and one lymph node on my armpit got sore. Dh had the same effects.

IggyAce · 18/12/2019 13:57

My ds who is asthmatic no longer receives the nasal vaccine (I take him to the gp for the jab), this is because it previously caused him to suffer difficulty breathing and ended up on steroids 10days after the vaccine 2 years running.
