The nasal flu vaccine - side effects?

olivertwistwantsmore · 18/12/2019 08:36

Has anyone's dc had the nasal spray vaccine? What side effects have your dc had?

Someone on another thread said that D&V was a side effect of the vaccine but I have searched online and can't see this anywhere.

DC and I due to have vaccine (them spray, me injection) this week and family are coming soon after.

Any advice would be fab. Thanks.

rosewils how do you know that was not just a cold rather than the vaccine.

Evilmorty · 18/12/2019 14:05

It may be coincidence but I was also given an AstraZeneca adverse reaction form so this suggests to me it’s having further phase 4/5 trial data collected. That and the fall out mean for my middle one I’d avoid it next time.

rosewils · 18/12/2019 14:14

@Selfsettling3 because he was fine before the vaccine, usually when he has a cold or virus it comes on gradually.

My GP and also the a&e paediatrician confirmed it was likely to be from the vaccine as they are all listed side effects.

I’m also a teacher and find I am ill straight after being with a class who has had the nose spray (not immunocompromised but pretty run down at this time of year). I recall the first year the spray was done there were s lot of children off with vomiting or temperatures and colds in the days after, but hard to know for sure if it was the spray or a bug going round.

Evilmorty · 18/12/2019 14:24

Also a cold is not the same as the flu, the temperature is the key difference. So the high temp is indicative of influenza, not just a cold.

It irritates my sons (mild) asthma for a few days every year.

PutYourBackIntoit · 18/12/2019 14:58

Same for my asthmatic son. I still get him to have it as I figure it's better that he has asthma triggered by a snotty nose, than asthma triggered by flu, but he has been very wheezy this time. Steroids and 3 days off school. My other 2 DC just get snotty nose.

olivertwistwantsmore · 18/12/2019 17:47

The NHS website says that the injection is preferable for dc with asthma.

Oliver Twist - I didn't know about the virus shedding. Interesting. I'm not immune suppresed I don't think but I'm always quite run down in autumn and winter. I wonder how I can stop myself getting ill when my class get nose spray next year.

Nonnymum · 19/12/2019 19:39

My GC have had it with no side effects at all.

Minai · 19/12/2019 19:41

My 2 year old had it yesterday. He’s said his nose feels a bit tickly a few times today but he’s been fine other than that.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 29/11/2020 02:18

Old thread but here in A&E - severe reaction, stomach upset, headache ad facial palsy. Just praying he gets full face function back. Putting him on steroids. We usually have the injection. I will never do the nasel one again. He’s 10.

Borderscotch · 29/11/2020 08:36

My youngest was ill two years in a row after having it, high temp, lethargic etc. We didn't give him it last year but have this year as thought it was necessary. He's been OK this year, under the weather for about a day but not ill.

blackcat86 · 29/11/2020 08:38

DD was a bit meh and tired for a couple of hours afterwards and then was fine.

Jessicabrassica · 29/11/2020 08:51

I actually forgot that mine had had it in school so no noticable effects here!
2-3 days after my flu vaccine last year I was ill for a week. First time I'd been ill in about 10 years. However it takes 14 days for the vaccine to be activated (which us why school nurses have their flu jabs 2 weeks before they deliver the nasal sprays) so it was entirely coincidental.

For teachers who get ill, might be worth talking to gp or school nursing service to see if you can be vaccinated early too.

Gancanny · 29/11/2020 09:31

@Toomuchtrouble4me I hope your DS is feeling better soon, thankfully reactions such as that are very rare.

One of my DC had an adverse reaction to a vaccine and now has any vaccines needed at paediatric outpatients so we're in a hospital setting if it happens again. So far it has not happened again and we've been able to get everything needed including the flu spray.

None of my DC have had a reaction to the spray.

Crunchymum · 29/11/2020 09:42

Almost 6yo went to bed a wee bit earlier on Friday (had nasal spray Friday in school) and fell straight to sleep she usually takes a while to nod off

8yo no effects at all.

MrsJonesAndMe · 29/11/2020 15:31

DS has had his for about 6 years now and always gets snotty afterwards, but then they often are at this time of year anyway. I got a very sore arm after mine - I've since read to have it done in your dominant arm and use it as muscle movement helps stop the stiffness, rather than the other and keeping it still.

So sorry to hear this, @Toomuchtrouble4me . Hope your ds recovers very soon.
PaperMonster · 29/11/2020 16:59

@Toomuchtrouble4me fingers crossed your son makes a full recovery xxx

TalesTheCat · 29/11/2020 18:26

My son has had it the past few years (SEN) and he's never had any side affects from it, but I'm sure, as with everything there will be a small percentage that will have a bad reaction.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 07/01/2021 15:47

His face recovered almost completely within 3 weeks - he has a slightly wonky smile now but I think so slight that only a mother would notice!
It was really bad, it got worse before it got better.
We had a follow up appointment mid December and I’m fairly certain that that’s where we picked up the Covid!
All good now.
No more nasel vaccines here!
