Why did people prefer Boris?

I have been racking my brain on this and I can see that BOTH Corbyn and Boris have negative points of course. And I know that brexit played a key part in this election.

But I’ve heard that many in the ex Labour heartlands had Labour running through their blood but They didn’t want to vote for Corbyn and had to vote for someone.

What was it about Boris Johnson and his bandits that offered that alternative? It’s not as if Boris is exactly more trustworthy or moral than Corbyn is it?

Why didn’t they vote for LD for example? Or even Brexit party or Greens?

I don’t really understand it

IamCatBed

And quite frankly even if it wasn't you'd seriously vote for another party based on the shoes a female candidate was wearing?

I think PufftheMagicDragArtist is pulling your leg. Their later post - Well, no - it wasn't the only reason but it added to the sole-searching - was the punchline.

You have to admit, it is funny. Grin

StarbucksSmarterSister · 14/12/2019 23:14

I think it was his slogan "get Brexit done" that pretty much won it for him

People do love a meaningless slogan.

And yes he's clever and manipulative and everything he does is calculated to benefit Boris, no one else.

ListeningQuietly · 14/12/2019 23:16

Boris had a very simple clear message that even the simplest people could understand.
Jeremy had a complicated convoluted message that even his ministers could not explain.

Boris was talking bollocks
and Jeremy's message was two faced

so the public held their noses
and jumped into the cess pit of Brexit

I've no loyalty to any party and have voted labour in the past but this time I voted conservative.
Labour handed this election over to the tories by leaving behind their traditional working class roots and going too far left for most people.
Labour supporters didn't help by sneering at anyone who didn't agree with them and in the end the public had their say in the ballot box. I do genuinely feel sorry for the decent labour MPs who have paid the price for Corbyn's ideology but then again they knew how the public felt about him and he wasn't very popular and didn't get rid of him when they had the chance.
I hope that they can win voters back in future but it's going to take a long time to rebuild the Labour Party, that's if it's even possible after this election. You can see the split in the party by the reactions over the past few days. First thing they need to do is get rid of momentum.
People didn't prefer Boris, he was the best option out of a bad bunch.

BoneyBackJefferson · 14/12/2019 23:26

Queenest
Easy if what you want is actually available.

Its easy if there is no-one there that you support.

The amount of people that come out with the bollocks that they HAD to vote for something that they didn't like is huge.

Yet you still have people against NOTA or spoiling the ballot.

Just because all of those standing are shit doesn't mean that you have to vote for the one that is "least" shit, cos its still shit.

BMW6 · 14/12/2019 23:26

I think they both talked Bollocks - but one much much more than the other!

Tigerty · 14/12/2019 23:40

In the past I believed Gordon Brown with his spending to help the U.K. That didn’t work. So Corbyn’s magic money forest did not ring true. I took it with a pinch of salt. We would all have had to pay for it regardless of what he claimed.

My main driver was self ID. Both Swinson & Corbyn came out for self ID without acknowledging the safeguarding risks to women from predatory men. Women would have had it much harder under both of these parties. I felt we would be ignored. No chance I was going to vote for either of them despite this being my voting pattern.

This thought even outshone the perfectly good labour MP we had.

Let’s face it Brexit has been awful so far. I still don’t know if Corbyn was remain or leave. I think it’s leave but only after another renegotiation but I’m unsure. Boris Johnson on the other hand was very clear in his message.

MarySidney · 14/12/2019 23:43

Wikipedia adds that Mr. Thatcher was...

Mr Roberts, surely - if we're talking about Margaret Thatcher's father.

lljkk · 14/12/2019 23:47

yeah, good point, Roberts indeed! But it was the page about her dad I think.

JoyceJames · 14/12/2019 23:50

Because they believe everything they read in the papers?

Tigerty · 14/12/2019 23:50

On my local sites one of the criticism towards my labour MP was that they voted however Corbyn wanted them to despite the constituency voting to leave in the referendum. So there was an underlying feeling that Corbyn, and therefore labour, was not paying attention to the people.

So I’m my area it was more anti Corbyn than pro Boris.

WatchingTheMoon · 15/12/2019 00:03

The economy is still not great and people want stability. Labour's manifesto was way too radical to provide that, however much I may agree with it.

The hectoring tone of the current Labour party is also a big factor, as others have said. I've always supported them (even been a member) but I can't stomach many of them these days.

Many normal working people see both parties as the same, out of touch elites.

WatchingTheMoon · 15/12/2019 00:03

And Brexi5, obv

CactusAndCacti · 15/12/2019 00:04

So I’m my area it was more anti Corbyn than pro Boris.

Same for all the areas I have an 'interest' with (previous constituency and x2 at work) Mine was a lone bit of red.

WatchingTheMoon · 15/12/2019 00:05

"Because they believe everything they read in the papers?"

This is why people don't vote Labour.

Because their supporters think ordinary people are thick.

Louise831 · 15/12/2019 00:15

Traditionally, I have always voted labour. This time I felt I couldn't vote labour, here's why......they didn't rule out another referendum, you can't vote again because you don't like the outcome the first time. I think this issue alone and suggesting that leave voters 'didn't understand what they were voting for.' Lost the Labour Party a lot of support and this was reflected in Thursday's voting. I also seriously disagree with some of the things Corbyn has said publicly, regarding foreign policy, military of defence, shoot to kill and 'reforming terrorists'. He scares the shit out of me to be honest. I also don't agree with giving everyone free broadband or winter fuel allowances. People earning £60K plus don't need it. Its a waste of money, it could be put towards mental health, homelessness and the NHS. I also got fed up of the left wing scaremongering. Despite this, I couldn't quite bring myself to vote conservative. So I didn't vote at all.

AlunWynsKnee · 15/12/2019 00:19

@WotchaTalkinBoutWillis Cameron won a majority in 2015. He didn't expect to. He made pledges he thought he could drop as a coalition agreement.

gluteustothemaximus · 15/12/2019 00:23

Nothing to do with corbyn. They want Brexit done. To get brexit done they need a majority government. Boris deal is oven ready. Brexit will now go through.

That is literally it.

AlunWynsKnee · 15/12/2019 00:24

People I know were sharing the terrorism links, piss takes about Dianne Abbott and free broadband. One of them is a die hard Tory. I suspect the other two who were vocal were floating voters.

SilverySurfer · 15/12/2019 02:03

Why do you think that people voted for Boris? I'm a Conservative voter and Boris did not enter in my thoughts when voting, nor did I vote for him in the leadership contest. I voted for them because I agree with their policies and because the alternatives were risible.

I didn't want Corbyn to fuck up the economy for years to come, nor Momentum turning us into a communist state. The LibDims are a one policy joke and I voted out so no chance I would vote for them plus their ex-leader appeared to have difficulty recognizing that a woman was a human female. The Greens have bonkers policies and they don't have a hope in hell of getting more than one MP into Westminster (their leader).

Cookit · 15/12/2019 06:34

The fact that politically he seems transported in from the 70s. That he’s friends with and an apologist for terrorists. The fact that he turns a blind eye to antisemitism in his party and doesn’t see it when presented with it (didn’t think the mural was antisemetic until pointed out to him). All of that?

I don’t like Boris either but he is marginally preferably. I don’t understand your “why don’t they vote Lib Dem or Green or Brexit party?” comment. These are wasted votes and also they would potentially let in Corbyn. If you’re picking your poison (Corbyn/ Johnson) why just pick a random 3rd party and take an even bigger gamble.
Finally, Brexit party? Seriously? Like Nigel Farage is a better prospect?!

Cookit · 15/12/2019 06:38

Nothing to do with corbyn. They want Brexit done.

This is not true. It’s obviously true for some people but there are poll after poll and anecdote from canvasser after anecdote that people were afraid of Corbyn and mentioning him at the doorstep.

I am not a diehard Brexiter. I voted Remain. I don’t vote Labour but they could have had my vote if they’d had a decent leadership that I wasn’t afraid would plunge the country into chaos. For me it absolutely was Corbyn (and Momentum and McDonnell and Abbott etc). I can think of a few labour MPs I would have had as party leader that I would have lent my vote for.

WobblyAllOver · 15/12/2019 06:49

Lots of threads on roughly the same subject and lots of posts from Labour supporters stating how stupid conservatives are.

If Labour and their supporters continue to call everyone else stupid they won't get anywhere at all. How is a party going to learn and move forward when they refuse to listen to voters?

I didn't vote for Boris. I voted for their policies.

Labours policies on nationalisation, free broadband, private schooling etc were awful to me. No way would I vote for them,

Mominatrix · 15/12/2019 06:53

@IamCarBed, sorry to say it but YOU were played. The Photo of Diane Abbot was NOT photoshopped. You just bought the Fake News (oh the irony) because it fit your world view.

HenSolo · 15/12/2019 07:10

The fact people believe Johnson despite the fact he is a proven liar and coward is mind boggling.

Here I go being another arrogant lecturing leftie I guess (by having an opinion and being pissed off at the way this country is)
