Why did people prefer Boris?

I have been racking my brain on this and I can see that BOTH Corbyn and Boris have negative points of course. And I know that brexit played a key part in this election.

But I’ve heard that many in the ex Labour heartlands had Labour running through their blood but They didn’t want to vote for Corbyn and had to vote for someone.

What was it about Boris Johnson and his bandits that offered that alternative? It’s not as if Boris is exactly more trustworthy or moral than Corbyn is it?

Why didn’t they vote for LD for example? Or even Brexit party or Greens?

I don’t really understand it

Haha if you say so. All these holier than thou posters don't like it when the silent (ish) majority speak as they think the bubble that is Mumsnet or their friendship circle is indicative of society. Well it's not so dry your eyes.

mummyrocks1 · 14/12/2019 22:36

That's what irritates me- those who voted Tory because they are scared of paying more. I would have been worse off under a labour government but I think when you have a certain level of wealth (we are not in the over £80,000 bracket) you should pay more. To me this is the problem, people want the services, good schools, NHS, bus service, pension, roads maintained etc but they don't want to pay for it. Or they don't care because they have private health care etc. They will be the first to moan when they can't get a doctors appointment or bin collection goes to monthly, pot holes in roads, local library shut.

I can accept other reasons for voting Tory, even though I don't agree with it but I can't accept that one reason when there is such a gap in wealth. Someone needs to pay for the services we take for granted otherwise we won't have them anymore.

No pain here, it’s a source of humour to me that so many people have been sucked in by Boris, the man of the people, will watch all the despair and cries of ‘but he promised’ over the next 5 years, it will provide entertainment

Milk two sugars - very true he's very sharp indeed and very clever.

@Saddler

Enjoy living in a bum wipe of a country. Karma is coming.

Bit of a contradiction there then, sounds like you're smarting a bit at the result to come out with a corker like that...

Because he's a jolly man, with funny hair, and that's enough for some people. 😑

user764329056 · 14/12/2019 22:42

No ‘smarting’ here, I didn’t vote Labour, the Bo boy did good at convincing so many people that he cares, future actions will prove otherwise

lljkk · 14/12/2019 22:43

Doesn't Thatcher count as middle class? Her dad owned 2 grocery shops, he was Alderman & Mayor.

Wikipedia adds that Mr. Thatcher was... "president of the Chamber of Trade, President of Rotary, a director of the Grantham Building Society and of the Trustee Savings Bank, chairman of the local National Savings Movement, a governor of the local boys' and girls' grammar schools and chairman of the Workers' Educational Association. "

KenDodd · 14/12/2019 22:44

Well if it's true - I heard Tommy Robinson has just joined the Tory party so Johnson appeals to a certain type of person.

Saddler · 14/12/2019 22:44

@thebluestocking I'll be brand new don't worry yourself about me 🇬🇧

Totally agree.

We're well insulated from the Tories. Mortgage paid off, good pensions and we are both looking retire in the next 5 years. We've also got a food/supplies stockpile for Brexit so we'll be fine. I have tried to warn/advise but nobody wants to listen. Their choice of course.

TheBlueStocking · 14/12/2019 22:50

@Saddler

I wouldn't waste a second of my time worrying about someone like you.

generalexpert · 14/12/2019 22:52

Seems to be the summary of this and so many other threads:

-if you voted to leave, you didn't understand.
-if you vote Tory you don't care.
-anything proposed by the Labour Party is looking after those less fortune and supported by intelligent people.

If only things were as easily explained. People come to a decision to vote and most voted for either Tory or labour both of which had a dramatically different approach.

This time around the electorate didn't want Corbyns offer. Doesn't mean that those who didn't vote for Corbyn didn't understand what he was offering or didn't care - they just thought it was best done in another way.

Dallasdays · 14/12/2019 22:53

@IAmCatBed - you say in your post above you would happily pay more tax. Why don't you do this of your own accord if this is true?

user764329056 · 14/12/2019 22:53

Yes IAmCatBed, we reap as we sow and if The Great Tommy Robinson has joined the party this will provide even more entertainment, never mind, it’s only 5 years, how much damage can an elitist misogynistic egotistical narcissistic really cause?

Singlenotsingle · 14/12/2019 22:56

Terrified silly at the thought of JC and his Marxists being in charge.

Freaked out at all the bribes being offered by Labour, including compensation for the WASPI women, (of whom I'm one).

Billions of pounds worth of money to be pumped into the system, a lot of it borrowed. Completely unrealistic and treating us as though we were stupid.

Diane Abbott lined up to be Home Secretary when really she didn't seem to have a clue.

The idea that the unions would essentially be running the country.

The fact that Boris was being set up. He got a deal with the EU, but afterwards was criticized for not being successful, when actually it was Parliament which sabotaged him.

John Bercow who treated him appallingly.
Many more reasons.....

Saddler · 14/12/2019 22:58

@thebluestocking aww don't be like that. Have a good Christmas and happy new year

CactusAndCacti · 14/12/2019 22:58

I have a sneaky suspicion that behind the bumbling buffoon exterior that people on here criticise so much is a very very clever man.

Don't know if that makes it better or worse though!

Boris is very clever, but you know one can use their intelligence for good or evil.

He gets away with stuff like a little naughty toddler.

BoneyBackJefferson · 14/12/2019 23:02

666onmyhead

And yet maybe if people did only vote for what they wanted instead of the "best fit" we would be in a much batter position.

Queenest · 14/12/2019 23:05

Easy if what you want is actually available.

Stravapalava · 14/12/2019 23:09

I think it was his slogan "get Brexit done" that pretty much won it for him. Even if you're not a leaver, you're sick of hearing about Brexit.

He's definitely not a buffoon, he's a very clever and calculating, manipulative man.

GorkyMcPorky · 14/12/2019 23:09

Can't bear the man, but I imagine some think he's hilarious. Or for the same reason that Trump proved so popular: he didn't fit the political mould? (Boris does fit the establishment mould; I just think some would be too blind to see that.)
