What do you spend your Christmas bonus on?

Have just been informed by my boss that I will be receiving a £1000 bonus after tax for Christmas. This is a LOT to me as we never usually get bonuses. Sitting here thinking and I have NO idea what to do with it.

Help!!

I'm a special needs teaching assistant no bonus here. When I worked at Waitrose and I got myself a laptop with the one I got from there.

FruityWidow · 14/12/2019 00:22

£50 John Lewis voucher. I'm looking at a cast iron casserole dish.

JudyDenchsBloomers · 14/12/2019 08:32

DH buys a watch with his, I buy jewellery with mine.

A bonus, in our house at least, is to treat yourself and just yourself. Enjoy OP and merry Christmas Smile

ChristmasTree999 · 14/12/2019 08:45

I’d buy the fancy awning we want for our camper van and pay for a couple of weekends away in it

WalkAwaySugarbear · 14/12/2019 08:48

I'm so boring, it just goes into savings. If there's something we need we buy it.

fastliving · 14/12/2019 13:39

I'll hopefully get a couple hundred £ (boss feeling guilty as lots of my team are leaving because she works us too hard!).
I'll put it in savings towards home improvements.

Handbagsatnoon · 14/12/2019 13:41

The company I work for give us our Christmas bonus in January Hmm and I usually put it towards a holiday.

Stompythedinosaur · 14/12/2019 15:28

I'm another NHS worker with no bonus, but dp's bonus normally goes towards a holiday.

burnoutbabe · 14/12/2019 15:33

Straight into pension do I get the gross amount and save ni.
They should offer you that option, saves them ni too.

BlouseAndSkirt · 14/12/2019 15:54

Straight into pension would really make the money work hard for you!

OP - if £1000 is a lot of money for you (it is a lot of money full stop) then maybe your first thought shouldn't be how to spend it - unless you are thinking 'new boiler / expensive stuff that you need to spend on but can't afford.

I would give myself a £50 treat and save the rest, or put it in my pension, or buy Premium Bonds and hope for a big won (or any win!).

When you desperately need £1000 is the time to spend it.

Not when you can't think of anything to buy.

Inliverpool1 · 14/12/2019 16:26

I’m self employed so I allow myself £1000 at Christmas as a bonus, this year it’s gone on blinds and carpets. Rock n roll

Purpletigers · 14/12/2019 16:33

No such thing as a bonus in my job . In your situation I would save it until you see something you’d like / need it .

bagelbaby · 14/12/2019 16:37

No bonus here either. Private sector n'all

HerRoyalNotness · 14/12/2019 16:40

We use it to pay bff or kids activities throughout the year. Salary covers bills and food, bonus is used for extras 😬

PurpleFrames · 14/12/2019 16:45

My "bonus" is £10, I will spend it on half of my bus pass to get to my work.

notthenormal · 14/12/2019 17:48

The bonus at my work is profit related so not guaranteed from year to year. Last year was a good year so my family got better Christmas presents and I bought a laptop and driving lessons.
My family know this year there is no bonus so don't expect the same value of gifts as last year

Therealjudgejudy · 14/12/2019 18:10

My bonus is my Spending money for my Christmas trip to New York. However, all my Bill's are paid and I've money in savings so I figured I'd treat myself,
Get yourself something nice OP.

TheBigFatMermaid · 14/12/2019 18:32

My DP gets £350! I actually spend the Christmas bonus on Christmas!

I have done nothing so far, as we're struggling with money. I am disabled and so frustrated that I cannot work 48 hours a week in a care home, like I used to. Pissed off with being skint!

Still, DPs Christmas bonus will mean my two teen DC get things they want/need for Christmas. We also buy for his family, SO brothers, SIL, PIL, nephew, nephews three DC and DP... .. but my DC get far more from them than we give!

I have pretty much done adult DD, SIL and DGC!

whattodo2019 · 14/12/2019 18:35

When I worked in the city and received bonuses I would give about 1/3 to charity by offering to pay for someone's Christmas shop
Or taking a homeless person shopping for essentials and a few treats
