What are you all using puff pastry for???

First world problem I know, but Ocado is sold out of every kind of puff pastry. I'm betting lots of you must have ransacked them of their stock and there isn't a national shortage.

What are you making with it????

I shall venture out to a proper shop tomorrow because I don't have the butter (or the will) to make my own pastry. I was planning to make my own sausage rolls but I'd like some inspiration for something more interesting if you'd be so kind as to indulge me.

At the risk of derailing the thread, please can I have the tuna and cheese pastie recipe @foamrolling? They sound delicious!

Patapouf · 09/12/2019 19:33

@Spitsandspots I think I could probably manage 260 over the course of the festive period 🐖

Rough puff is quicker and easier than puff if you're making your own; that's what I aways use for mince pies.

8paws8legs · 09/12/2019 19:51

I made the nutella Christmas tree the other day with puff pastry, it was actually really quick, also made jam tarts with lemon and lime marmalade with the left over pastry 👌 cheese and onion pie too or mince and onion - I prefer puff pastry though over short crust so any pastry dish I always use puff x

NemophilistRebel · 09/12/2019 19:54

I hadn’t thought of using Nutella. Sounds scrumptious

HollyBollyBooBoo · 09/12/2019 19:58

Ocado always run out of all butter puff pastry in December, why the heck they just don't buy more is beyond me!

Sorry I have contributed to the shortage and have 3 packs in the freezer ready for sausage rolls and mince pies next week!

Patapouf · 09/12/2019 20:01

Nutella sounds heavenly 🤤🤤🤤

I wish I had the freezer space to buy whatever stock I can find I store and freeze for future use.

At this rate I will have a puff pastry based meal a day for the rest of December!Grin

Today we made random things with pastry - sausage rolls, sausage rolls with pesto, a vartiety of cheeses with a variety of chutneys (double gloucester and spiced apple and pear chutney was a good combo)

Ocado had an offer on their puff so I stocked up!
Today I made cream horns but instead of jam I filled them with Nutella and cream. Heavenly!

MerryDeath · 09/12/2019 20:14

i bought two packs today and i have no fucking idea why? i was food shopping whilst hungry - big mistake.

i'll probably make a batch of sausage rolls and a batch of cheese straws to help with the catering for big xmas with the in-laws but i've only had that thought thanks to this thread.

Forgotmy · 09/12/2019 20:14

Younger folk with lots of energy and love of the Chrismas cheer might be in a position to do this. Happy Days for all of you.

I buy it in and enjoy just the same. I relax..... and the outcome is great for visitors. As if they would complain lol.

MerryDeath · 09/12/2019 20:16

also if desperate you can quite easily make a 'rough puff' (google) which i've always found very good! i freeze and grate the butter 👌

Weepingwillows12 · 09/12/2019 20:17

Steak and stilton pie using leftover slow cooked brisket from sunday roast.

dementedma · 09/12/2019 20:20

Pin wheels and mince pies.

foamrolling · 09/12/2019 20:20

Well I call it a recipe but it's so simple it barely earns that description:

Sheet of puff pastry cut into 6 kind-of-squares
Tin of tuna mixed with a handful or 2 of grated cheese
Brush some milk on the edge of the squares.
Plop the tuna mix in the middle of each square
Fold the square over to make a kind of triangle
Brush milk over the pasties
Pop in the oven on a baking tray lined with greaseproof paper on a high-ish heat - I usually do around 200 degrees - for about 15 minutes

Easy peasy. The kids love them in their lunch boxes.

Mince pie slice

Chicken and leek pie

Beef pie

Sausage rolls (the secret is some ketchup and finely diced smoked streaky bacon in with the sausage meat)

SoftBlocks · 09/12/2019 20:44

Mince pies and sausage rolls.

I'd either spread pesto over the whole sheet, roll it up, cut in slices, glaze and bake.
Or marmite (with a little added hot water to make it more spreadable) and grated cheese.
Mini mince puffs - cut into rounds, dollop of sweet mincemeat on one, top with another, glaze and bake.
Apple turnovers - cut into squares, big dollop of apples (I cook them in a bit of orange juice rather than water and sugar), glaze and bake.

AdaColeman · 09/12/2019 21:05

Vol au vents and anchovy twists.

I make rough puff for sausage rolls.

readit · 09/12/2019 21:09

Delia’s vegetarian sausage rolls

Brie and cranberry parcels

MsRinky · 09/12/2019 21:37

I bought three packs today, sorry. They are destined for Beef Wellington for Boxing Day, steak pie for New Year's Day and sausage rolls for whenever I fancy them.

Patapouf · 09/12/2019 22:08

I'm intrigued by marmite and cheese, do you think that would be okay for a baby under one? Or too salty??

Whatever is in my freezer is being cooked and eaten tomorrow to make way for the blocks of pastry I need to store.
