Much depends on your budget and preferences, in a city like NY I’d rather spend money on doing stuff and food and drink than the hotel.

MissConductUS · 09/12/2019 19:25

When you're in NYC if you get a bit homesick we have a first class English pub you can pop into for a stout and a roast dinner:

Wow, thank you so much for all the reccomendations! They really are welcome Smile
Cost is a factor, but because its his 30th and we can only stay for four nights due to leaving the children with grandparents, I am going to be looking at somewhere relatively expensive.
Looks like I have many great options to consider, will report back when I have booked.

We stayed at The Muse. It’s a Kimpton hotel and has a boutique feel to it. It’s in a great location and it does free wine in the lobby at happy hour. Also did hot choc or hot cider in the afternoons.

mynameiscalypso · 09/12/2019 21:04

We generally stay at the Bryant Park Hotel which is very modern and has a great location. I've also stayed at The Giraffe and really liked it although that was only one night.

ThisLittlePiggyWentTo · 09/12/2019 21:07

Cost was a factor for us. We stayed at an affinia hotel - possibly dumont off the top of my head. Well placed and the views from the roof were great as near empire state and Chrysler. Amazing restaurant under it too. Huge rooms!

ElphiasDoge · 09/12/2019 21:11

Stayed at the Arlo Soho. Bit hipsterish, pick and mix in the lobby, bicycle included, free beer/wine/nibbles between 4 and 7 with no cellphone policy during this time to encourage interaction, rooftop bar. Not right in the middle of the major tourist things but lots of great places to eat in Soho and great for people watching. Did have a tourist tax but this was included with BA. Room quite compact and one of those dreaded glass walled bathrooms. Depends what you’re looking for!

I stayed there a couple of times when we were only going to shows - it is very nice.

We stayed at Sheraton Tribeca, loved it and were going back in April. We stayed club level, and have booked it again as it has free food and coffee included Grin

MozzchopsThirty · 09/12/2019 21:44

I'm watching with interest as I'm going back in February with OH for Valentine's Day
Currently booked the Dylan hotel but will have a look at some of these.

@HairyFloppins I took my dcs may half term. We had mice in our first room so were moved. It's VERY dated. I don't think it's been decorated since the 70s. If you've seen American Horror Story 'Hotel' I half expected to find bodies in the mattresses 🙈
Don't be swayed by the pool, there's so much to do in New York, we were never there. It's not up to much and my ds has a brief 10 mins one day and that was it

@MissConductUS thank you for the link. Me & OH are quite big drinkers and normally like to stop in pubs & bars. Would we be better staying in Brooklyn for this kind of trip? I know OH will moan if he can't have a drink & relax somewhere. I just don't remember ever seeing bars & pubs in manhattan

Milomonster · 09/12/2019 22:20

@ElphiasDoge did you like Arlo? I’m staying at the NoMad branch over Xmas.

ElphiasDoge · 09/12/2019 22:33

@Milomonster I was quite heavily pregnant so couldn’t really enjoy the free wine and they didn’t have non alcoholic options so that curbed my enjoyment a little! It was a bit wanky but I quite enjoyed that about it!! Definitely fun and novel but also nice! You’ll have a fab time!

uggmum · 10/12/2019 00:29

We stayed at The Westin near Grand Central. Great location. View of the Chrysler Building. Good service.

Milomonster · 10/12/2019 07:23

@ElphiasDoge thank you! I don’t drink alcohol and it’s crap there are no non-alcoholic options! Oh well, I’ll be paying $215 Urban Fee for the view then (hopefully I get an ESB view).

Mamabear88 · 10/12/2019 07:35

Sofitel. Great central location (right near Times Square), amazing breakfast, comfy beds and MASSIVE shower heads. Highly recommend!

ChasingRainbows19 · 10/12/2019 07:47

Stayed in the New Yorker twice mind you last tome was ten years ago. Good location but basic.

We stayed at 50 Bowery This year which is actually quite far south near Brooklyn and Manhattan bridge ( China town) but the view from the roof top bar back to manhattan is beautiful. Nice new ish hotel too and near to transport links subway etc. Though we walk a lot so we don't mind being further out and it was nice being near to Brooklyn for a change.

horrayforharoldlloyd · 10/12/2019 08:11

The Refinery. It is boutique and hipster - beautiful toiletries, rooftop bar and pool. The whole place smells divine.

ColaPip · 10/12/2019 08:21

Park Hyatt - Central Park. Fab location and just along the street from the Brooklyn Diner for the BEST breakfasts.

Milomonster · 10/12/2019 10:25

I’ve stayed in Bowery 50 too and liked it although not one I’d go back to. Really loved the location in the heart of Chinatown, close to Tribeca, Brooklyn, SoHo. You get a great feel for the contribution of immigrants to NY’s history.

Avoid The Mondrian in NoMad. Brown animal print plasticy carpets were most offputting.

AuntSpiker · 10/12/2019 10:33

We've also started at the Sofitel and would really recommend it. Very central and the staff were great. I rang them in advance and asked if we could have a room with a view (it was a surprise trip for DC) and they gave us a room which had a spectacular view of the Empire State and the Chrysler buildings.

Wendyasbury · 10/12/2019 11:27

Crown plaza times square was fab.

Steer well clear of the Edison and the Pennsylvania

ivykaty44 · 10/12/2019 12:31

Auntspiker has a great suggestion about contacting hotel and making requests, I asked for view as it was dds birthday. I also put a note on the dinner reservation and Dd was given a complementary glass of pink champagne- so worthwhile doing these things

DinaCaliente · 10/12/2019 12:46

@MozzchopsThirty

I stayed at the Dylan this year.
It's in a lovely location and is quite boutique-y. New York Library is at the end of the road one way and Grand Central the other.

The staff were amazing, they couldn't do enough for us and the steakbar next door was lovely.

My only issue was their use of single use plastics (every cup was wrapped in plastic, every straw etc), but I brought this up with the manager and he said they are looking to change what they do.

Also, someone mentioned the Library...that was right by and it looked lovely.

MissConductUS · 10/12/2019 13:39

@MozzchopsThirty I am not a drinker so not really an expert, but Brooklyn tends to be more residential so I think you'd have a better selection and more upscale choices staying in Manhattan.

ivykaty44 · 11/12/2019 05:51

The inside of the library is beautiful, worth a stroll inside if your passing
