Hi all, I'm looking for a new board game for the family (kids are 5 and 7). I'd like something we can all play together. The kids like Guess Who, Carcassone (played without farm rule), Scotland Yard, Othello, Dobble, Monopoly (I cannot stand it though).

Looking for something to grow into a bit (no point buying a junior game that is boring in a year).

So what's your best games?

Try monopoly empire - it’s quick and simplified and quite evil!
Labyrinth is a good game as well

Baboutheocelot · 07/12/2019 22:04

Rhino hero

I bought Labyrinth on a MN recommendation a few years back and we all still love it.

Tsuro
Dungeon mayhem - fast D&D inspired card game
King of the dice
Sleeping queens
Cluedo
Kingdomino
King of Tokyo

QueenOfTheSandals · 07/12/2019 22:36

Ooh great thanks! We have Labyrinth and think it's great (good recommendation). I had forgotten about Cluedo, I may mooch for that in a charity shop.

All the rest I haven't heard of so will go off for a bit of a google. I like discovering new games, thanks very much.

Happy to hear more recs...

Dixit is fab and the cards are beautiful. It sparks the imagination

eavers · 07/12/2019 22:41

'Eye Found It' is good

milienhaus · 07/12/2019 22:43

Settlers of Catan or Ticket to Ride - both classics suitable for children but designed for everyone!

thetreeisstressingmeout · 07/12/2019 22:43

Ingenious

TheBitterBoy · 07/12/2019 22:43

We all enjoy Quirkle, Blokus, Settlers of Catan, and when there's a few of us (at least 5) Telestrations is great fun

thetreeisstressingmeout · 07/12/2019 22:43

Scotland Yard

ChameleonCircuit · 07/12/2019 22:46

Not quite a board game, but Forest Dragon is good.

BelfastSmile · 07/12/2019 22:52

Ticket to Ride is great. We also like Rummikub, though that might depend a bit on your kids.

Do you have a board game cafe nearby? They're great for trying out games, and the staff are usually very knowledgeable and can offer advice.

Sforsh49 · 07/12/2019 22:53

Rummikub

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 07/12/2019 22:55

I forgot some!
Takenoko
Sushi go
Forbidden island (cooperative)
Karuba (might be a bit old but one of mine played it well at 6)

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 07/12/2019 22:56

& I want to second Qwirkle - outstanding game.

TypicalMeBreakMyTypicalRules · 07/12/2019 23:00

Second Settlers of Catan

PandaG · 07/12/2019 23:05

I personally think settlers and ticket to Ride would be a bit of a stretch for the 5 yo this year. Excellent games though. Agree Qwirkle is great for all ages.

Uno ? Skyjo - straightforward card game but enough to entertain adults too.

PandaG · 07/12/2019 23:07

Board game cafe a good shout to try out games...or if you happen to be near Sheffield would happily walk you through several suggested on this thread!

clearsommespace · 07/12/2019 23:12

Catan junior is brilliant for 6 + and before you know it they'll be Catan loving teens.

Moreanonymousme · 07/12/2019 23:13

Smuggle is a family favourite. My parents have had it for years, but nobody else has ever heard of it!

inwood · 07/12/2019 23:16

Game of life has been a huge hit with 8yo Dts.

jackstini · 07/12/2019 23:18

Another vote for game of life
Takes a while but it's been a go to game for my DC for years

QueenOfCatan · 07/12/2019 23:23

Carcassonne is my go to for family! My just turned 3yo loves an adapted version of Camel Cup. Quirkle is a good one for kids (DH and I hate it but DD loves it). Catan is great, can be adapted if needed. Rummikub is fun and good number practice. Not so much a board game but rorys story cubes are great fun for imaginative kids.
