Hi all, I'm looking for a new board game for the family (kids are 5 and 7). I'd like something we can all play together. The kids like Guess Who, Carcassone (played without farm rule), Scotland Yard, Othello, Dobble, Monopoly (I cannot stand it though).

Looking for something to grow into a bit (no point buying a junior game that is boring in a year).

So what's your best games?

its an old one but Quiz Kids is always played in our house. in fact its always the quiz ones that are popular.

I played qwirkle with DH and DS (6) today, definitely one all ages can enjoy.

Oooh brilliant thanks all so much!

The reply's have reminded me we have Settlers and Rumikub! I used to play a lot of the latter with my Gran.

A few have suggested Game of Life, I have very fond memories of this game and recently found it while visiting my mum. It was so tedious! I was really disappointed. But maybe I should suck it up for the kids.

So many others I've not come across and will enjoy researching, great suggestions on Board Game Cafe, I'm in rural Scotland so will have to wait till we go to Edinburgh.

I love a quiz and someone suggested Quiz Kids but I couldn't find it.

Thanks again everyone.

Oh, we were in Edinburgh last weekend and found 2 board game cafes - Noughts and Coffees, which was a nice cafe but with fewer games (and you can't browse them, they give you a menu and then bring you whichever games you choose), and Games Hub which has more of a geeky vibe and a bit dingy but loads of games, which you can browse.

We spent a couple of hours in Games Hub, it was great!

I would not put myself through game of life for the children. (Board game snobGrin)
Better to introduce them to better games IMO.
If your youngest has the patience, Takenoko was a big hit with ours during primary school. Cute Panda!
Also Blokus.

Oh I definitely second Camel Cup too!

Another vote for rhino hero, as it’s so straightforward yet fun.

I think Azul might also work, or Quacks of Quedlinburg (one of my favourites). Or how about “don’t get got”, which can be played throughout the day, as it’s about trying to trick people into doing things.

Connect4 a simple favourite for years in our house.

shark chase (but this may be nostalgia)

Quacks of Quedlinberg is one of my favourites! I'd say it might be one to save until they're a bit older, though I haven't played it with kids.

We were eyeing up board games last week and so many were for age 6+ - we reckon DS will be old enough to get some good ones next Christmas, can't wait!

You might find a games festival easier to get to than a cafe & they usually have a lending library so you pay your ticket & then just a deposit as you borrow games all day.

Glasgow was last month, Tabletop Scotland is in Perth (August) but you’ll probably find one local to you.

We’ve come to the conclusion that age guides for games are based on if everyone playing was that age - with an adult there to facilitate games can be played much much younger. Ours regularly played 8+ games age 3 onwards & my 8 yr old plays 14+ games all the time. So you may have less time to wait than you think!

@Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons yes, we're taking that into account!
