Who buys individual Christmas cards?

I thought most people bought Christmas cards in packs if they're bothering to do cards. Who buys individual ones from card shops? They're not all 'to a lovely sister this Christmas' etc. And they take up half the card shops' displays!

My brother did send a few individual ones to each of my family this year but he's a bit odd Grin

I still haven't heard of any one sending Happy Easter cards either but they still appear that time of year in the shops.

In our local shop, judging by what's on the cards when I went in, it's the cat and the dog for their owners. Hmm

ajandjjmum · 02/12/2019 18:57

Always have done this - I actually rather like it, and certainly never thought it weird.

Find it quite sad now not having to buy cards for 'Mum and Dad'.

I've always bought (and received) individual specific cards for dp and immediate family. Until I opened this thread, I assumed that everyone did the same.

We do for dh's parents. They expect it.

M0reGinPlease · 02/12/2019 19:06

My MIL.

We had ten years of 'for a lovely son and his partner at Christmas time' (the more specific the better as far as she's concerned), then three years of 'for a lovely son and daughter in law at Christmas time' and then lo and behold (Christ knows where she finds them) several years of 'for a lovely son, daughter in law and granddaughter...' 🤮

She also buys ones so think, with so many layers of paper inside that they're basically a book. And covered in fucking glitter.

I do. My mum and sister expect a family card. My mum in particular expects a lot of thought to be put into the card choice and the words inside.
I am also expected to demonstrate that I fully appreciate the words in the card she has chosen for me even when I actually give no shits about them.
I love her though so I do the pretence and choose the nice card.

AliceLittle · 02/12/2019 19:06

I do because I will only buy 1 for my mum.

M0reGinPlease · 02/12/2019 19:06

Thick, not think. Rage made me type too fast.

ReginaGeorgeous · 02/12/2019 19:16

I used to. My family always made a big thing of it when I was growing up, so it was the norm to me. I stopped doing it the first year I wasn't able to buy a 'Dad' card.
The only ones I send now are to my children.

mathanxiety · 02/12/2019 19:36

My mum has a Christmas birthday. It rolls around every year without fail, as does Christmas.

So I buy her card in August.

dementedpixie · 02/12/2019 19:37

I always plan to buy them early and then forget

viccat · 02/12/2019 19:56

I usually buy a couple of the nicer quality or independent designers cards, they just feel more special than something from a pack of 10. I don't mean the "to a sister" ones at all, to be clear, just individually sold cards. I only send about 10 in total these days anyway.

Writing Christmas cards was a big tradition in my childhood home, this was obviously in the time before social media when people appreciated a card from someone they hadn't heard from for months.

beckyvardy · 02/12/2019 20:20

I do my family loves cards.

kenandbarbie · 02/12/2019 20:30

I always wonder that. If I sent them to my immediate family it'd be um 25!!! Who has the time!

NatashaAlianovaRomanova · 02/12/2019 20:41

I do for the kids & my parents but everyone else gets big standard cards.

As someone with a December birthday my worst ever card said

For your birthday at Christmas time

& had some twee Christmas scene on it! My birthday is the same day every year - but my card in advance FFS!

NemophilistRebel · 02/12/2019 20:43

My husband Confused

First person I ever met who does

He buys special ones for his parents. Siblings and grandparents Envy

Bluerussian · 02/12/2019 20:44

Mine are mostly bought in packs but I do buy some individual cards for particular people.

Bluerussian · 02/12/2019 20:46

PS: I also sometimes receive individual cards.

Celebelly · 02/12/2019 20:48

To my granddaughter and her partner at Christmas

Ha, my gran got us this card too! Where do they find them?! It was oddly specific.

aibutohavethisusername · 02/12/2019 20:49

My OH’s Mum and my ex’s Mum.

I’ve got one for my OH this year as I’m putting concert tickets in it.

Bickles · 02/12/2019 20:51

I buy one for my Auntie and her partner- she buys “to a special niece” etc type cards for me.
Also my parents like a grandma and grandpa card.
That’s all.
I send fewer and fewer cards each year.

badguyduh · 02/12/2019 22:06

For your birthday at Christmas time

Oh no! I don't let Christmassy things start until DC's birthday (early December) is out of the way.

It sounds like quite a nice tradition in some families, I've just never seen it (although thinking about it, I did choose a really nice one for now-DH when we were just starting going out). It's probably one of those big issues like shoes on/shoes off inside where no-one can comprehend the other way of doing it Grin

I usually do, I think because my Mum always has. Cutting back this year, so just getting a Mum and Dad one, otherwise, just a general pack of cards for immediate family and a few 'oldies'.

Thatnovembernight · 02/12/2019 22:12

I usually buy one for my parents and I used to buy one for my grandparents when they were alive. Everyone else gets cards from a pack!

Trumpton · 02/12/2019 22:25

My MIL . It’s so important to her . I take her to the local Independent card shop and hand her over to the fab staff and she has a wonderful 30 mins agonising over special cards .
Our best one this year ( not Christmas ) was “ To my Great Grandson on his 9th Birthday “ she was thrilled with that.

Each year I buy her a special card and as she loves a verse write her a poem to go inside . If it makes me feel queasy then it’s a winner !

I will see if I can find a copy of this year’s .....
