With family shopping - lovely offer of new TV as they think I'm cruel to the kids not having one over Christmas .
Haven't had a new TV for 20 years let alone a smart on !
Any tips to best brand to have Netflix and Amazon prime on ? Tx

We're delighted with our Samsung one. It was really reasonably priced too.

Celebelly · 02/12/2019 10:51

LG are generally a good bet too. You can register with Which for £1 for the first month and look at their Best Buys

skippy67 · 02/12/2019 11:18

We have an LG. It's fab.

ActualHornist · 02/12/2019 11:23

Do not get an LG.

We had ours for 14 months and the screen went blue. Common fault apparently - the LED/LCD (can’t remember which) blow and then have to be replaced.

Tv was out of warranty so they wouldn’t replace but they would repair for £350. Tv was £400 brand new.

Luckily I paid £25 for a report and Very refunded in full, so I ordered a Samsung. Like it a lot, it tends to drop WiFi every so often which is a pain in the arse, but otherwise I like it.

ActualHornist · 02/12/2019 11:24

(Sorry to those pp they have an LG! I’m sure yours will be fine...)

rslsys · 02/12/2019 11:27

Sony household here, but that's only because Blu-ray & Stereo are Sony and they can share handsets and control each other.
We opted for a Humax box & FireStick instead of a smart TV. Can get all Freeview stuff, Netflix, YouTube, Apple TV etc etc.

CottonSock · 02/12/2019 11:27

You can make it smart with an Amazon fire stick for £35. Panasonic, sony and similar are good brands.

hanahsaunt · 02/12/2019 11:29

We were originally pleased with our Samsung but they are a bit Apple-y in using their own systems and lack of inter-connectivity. We opted for Sony over the weekend for our replacement not least because we didn't want the odd Samsung smart tv thing but the more generic Freeview one.

DGRossetti · 02/12/2019 11:58

Personally I wouldn't pay a penny extra for any "smart" features. You have no idea how long they will be supported. I'd just want the best possible picture, and connectivity to plug in something like a Chromecast or Firestick and let them do all the smart bits for me.

I am well aware that (for now) it's probably impossible to buy a non "smart" TV. Still, we live in hope.

MotherAbigail · 02/12/2019 12:13

@ActualHornist our LG has done exactly the same! Clicked on this thread to look for recs as we need to buy new one for this reason. So annoyed!

ActualHornist · 02/12/2019 12:53

@motherabigail have you had any luck getting it replaced? Once we had the report it was really easy, shame the first three tv repairman I called never bothered coming back to me Hmm

There are only a few Smart TV models that are still supporting Amazon Prime App and or Netflix(probably due to the Amazon Fire Stick) Samsung stopped supporting AP a couple of years back on some models and Netflix is about to stop supporting Samsung App on a number of models too.

I have a Toshiba Smart TV and I like everything about it...BUT I use it with my PS4(or PS3) to stream the Apps for Netflix, Amazon Prime(no Amazon Prime on this make) and Now TV.

I could have bought a Fire Stick for Amazon Prime but weighed up that I wanted to use an Ethernet cable from modem/router to PS4 them HDMI lead from PS4 to TV. Amazon Fire Stick is wifi and if you have lots of people using the wifi it can drop the signal. So opted to use PS4 for streaming instead.

TV is a couple of years old and it works great with no issues at all.
I also wanted one with a compact stand rather than 2 sets of feet so it would still fit on my smaller TV cabinet.

Here's the model a similar but newer model

ActualHornist · 02/12/2019 14:43

I think you’ve got that the wrong way round @MsPepperPotts. Older smart tv’s will no longer support amazon prime and Netflix but newer and new are fine. I checked as I saw an article about it last week or so, our Samsung is fine just not earlier models.

Celebelly · 02/12/2019 14:46

It's also only older models of Samsung from the US and Canada that will no longer support Prime app. And yes you've got that that the wrong way round @MsPepperPotts

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 02/12/2019 15:08

We're really happy with our Samsung one. Picture is good, and apps easy to navigate/use. It's 2 years old and supports amazon prime.

gamerchick · 02/12/2019 15:11

When my last one went to be repaired I asked the blokes who collected it what was the brand they dont see much. One was a Toshiba. Don't get LG or Panasonic. They're the worst to be collected for repair.

AndWhatNext · 02/12/2019 15:16

I've a 12 year old Sony TV.

Firestick for Netflix, Prime and Apple TV+.
Plus the usual iPlayer, 5, 4 and ITV.

Not sure what the benefit of a smart TV is... Is it better and have more features for games consoles?

ActualHornist · 02/12/2019 15:18

Honestly if you’re happy with what you’ve got, then you don’t need anything. It’s just a selection on the telly that takes you into Netflix or whatever. Easier as well if you need to swap between HDMI ports.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 02/12/2019 15:21

Sony. The Sony chap in JL was very helpful. The Samsung QLED has very bright colours that we thought looked a bit artificial.

Fluffy40 · 02/12/2019 15:23

Happy with my panasonic, about 4 years old.

TheDogsMother · 02/12/2019 15:24

Happy with our Samsung.

MustardScreams · 02/12/2019 15:28

I despise my Samsung, it’s slow, ignores me, does it’s own thing when it feels like it. £650 and only a year old!

I’m going to get a Sony next.

TheFairyCaravan · 02/12/2019 15:33

We bought a new Toshiba yesterday so we can put the Sharp upstairs. The sound and picture is amazing and apparently it's Alexa compatible but we've not got that far yet.

We bought it in Tesco because I had loads of Clubcard points.

amusedbush · 02/12/2019 17:27

We've just bought a fucking ridiculously big, thanks DH Samsung QLED from John Lewis. It was a real extravagance but even I have to admit that the picture is great.

Dowser · 02/12/2019 18:06

We have many LG products in the past..all good
Our LG tv we have been pleased with
Our digihome..also good
