With family shopping - lovely offer of new TV as they think I'm cruel to the kids not having one over Christmas .
Haven't had a new TV for 20 years let alone a smart on !
Any tips to best brand to have Netflix and Amazon prime on ? Tx

Samsung tv is 3 years old and no longer supports any of the 'iplayer' type options but BBC. No itv hub or 4od, for example.

We have a 10 year old Panasonic. Great quality. Not a smart TV but has plenty of HDMI ports for us to connect Xbox, fire stick, Now TV etc which basically turn it into a smart TV it's also much cheaper to upgrade the 'stick' or box attachment than it is to buy a whole new TV when it needs upgrading.

TheDogsMother · 03/12/2019 08:48

@WitsEnding When you say your Samsung doesn't support apps other than BBC how does this manifest itself ? Do the apps disappear? Can you only use iPlayer ? We have a Samsung over 4 years old and I regularly use 4OD and sometimes ITV hub. Nothing seems to have changed. I've seen it mentioned that older smart TVs will stop supporting certain apps and I wondered how this actually happened.

amusedbush · 03/12/2019 09:00

@LittleMissEngineer

I think you've just bought the same one as us Grin

We have this one and it's amazing, though it was £299 when we bought it so look for offers

WitsEnding · 03/12/2019 10:14

@TheDogsMother the apps have disappeared. The majority of apps in the apps section have also disappeared. Software is 'up to date'.

TheDogsMother · 03/12/2019 10:25

@WitsEnding Thank you for explaining. So the smart tv is going to get a bit less smart !

TranquilityofSolitude · 03/12/2019 10:29

Apparently the problem is that Samsung won't pay to renew access for older models, and not anything technical. We have an older Samsung and use an Amazon firestick for access to BBC iPlayer etc.

MotherAbigail · 03/12/2019 10:58

@ActualHornist I’m waiting to hear from the credit card company to see if they will do something. So frustrating that TVs are not expected to last anymore. We had a Samsung previously that we only replaced because it didn’t have USB ports, it was fine otherwise.

ActualHornist · 03/12/2019 13:20

I know tell me about it. I was so angry when I spoke to LG - so I can’t reasonably expect a £500 tv to last me more than a year?! Great.

MoltoAgitato · 03/12/2019 13:25

Don’t buy a smart tv for smart features. You’re going to keep a TV for about 5 or 10 years ideally. Use an Amazon fire stick or Apple TV (or PlayStation or anything else) to make it smart - those things cost a fraction of the price of a good tv and can be replaced when obsolete. The “smart” apps on our Samsung (8 years old or so) are completely useless now but it’s fine as a TV, and we use the Amazon box for smarts.

DGRossetti · 03/12/2019 13:29

little tip is to get a £2 USB multiway, plug that into your TV once and then plug devices into that. Saves wear and tear on the expensive bit. (Also works for laptops etc) ...

Gamble66 · 04/12/2019 18:53

Thanks everyone x

Why I wouldn't pay a penny extra for any "smart" features

www.theregister.co.uk/2019/12/10/bbc_iplayer_samsung_outage/

Owners of some Samsung smart TVs are finding themselves unable to watch BBC iPlayer on their gear after support for scores of models was suddenly dropped.

The Beeb on Friday quietly pulled the plug on iPlayer for 150-odd types of Samsung TVs manufactured between 2012 and 2018, saying only that the sets could no longer meet various unspecified "technical requirements."

(contd) ...

Dumb TV + cheap Smart plugin is the way forward.

I have a Sony Bravia which I like a lot.

ThinkIamflyingundertheradar · 10/12/2019 12:18

Two of our old Panasonics (about 3/4 years old) have stopped supporting Amazon Prime which is a nuisance as I watch a lot on Amazon. I have a Firestick which does the job but it’s yet one more appliance to dilute the WiFi signal. The newer , curved type Panasonic still supports it.

Oldraver · 10/12/2019 13:27

We are pleased with our Sony apart from the sound so had to get a sound bar

I've yet to tell DS or OH they can get an App to control the tv

Stabbitha · 10/12/2019 13:41

My tv stopped supporting certain apps.

I called the warranty line even though the tv was out of warranty and they sent me a update via usb for free.

Polaroid tv. Cheap.

DGRossetti · 10/12/2019 13:53

I called the warranty line even though the tv was out of warranty and they sent me a update via usb for free.

Which does prompt some fascinating - and completely unresolved - consumer protection issues.

www.theregister.co.uk/2019/11/26/bose_firmware_borks_headphones/

tells the sorry saga of people who bought working Bose headphones that are now decorative paperweights after an over-the-air update managed to break them.

AgeLikeWine · 10/12/2019 13:56

We are happy with our Panasonic 4K smart TV. We bought it 3 years ago in the Boxing Day sale at JL. They give a two year warranty which is a big bonus.

Stabbitha · 10/12/2019 19:43

Yes. It was an update gone wrong that broke it.

They had to send the update manually through the snail mail.

My point is though if I hadn't called I would have bought a new tv unnecessarily

Bit extreme when a £40 Firestick would have done the trick ?

Stabbitha · 11/12/2019 10:22

Not everyone likes Amazon. I don't want any sticks thanks. Plus, I like having one remote.
