Why did you miss your flight?

Sitting at the British Embassy having missed my flight (due to no fault of my own Hmm ) .. wondering if anyone else has had any awful 'missing their flight experiences' to make me feel any better Blush Also how long did it take you to get your emergency documents? Would like to know how long i could possibly have to be waiting to get another flight home. And also whether you had to pay for your new flight home if you missed your scheduled one due to losing your passport? Please be honest too hehe, thanks.

Do you have travel insurance as most of the policies have cover for additional expenses due to list travel documents.

FlibbertyGiblets · 28/11/2019 08:51

Oh gosh you poor thing, how did it happen?

Never missed a flight; we did once get timings a bit wrong and had to do that mad run across the airport hall with baby in arms and luggage which was heart poundingly awful.

Touchofclass · 28/11/2019 08:52

Because my dafty dp wouldn't get rid of the alcohol in our cabin cases ! Security was going mad , 3 times he got us to go through and in the end we had to throw it all away to then him arse around in duty free for more (it was all presents !) I walked off to find the gate which had shut ! We had to buy new tickets and get a hotel for the night ... And the new tickets let us put our bags under the plane so we didn't need to throw it all away in the end !

Let's just say when we were sitting in the airport wondering what to do next and he came back with burger king , the last thing on my mind was food and he was told what an idiot he was , I was fuming !!!

We still laugh about it now , but I didn't find it funny at the time !!!

Hope you get home safe and with little stress.

DH made it to the airport by a whisker and stopped to charge his phone before going through security. BIG MISTAKE. The flight was delayed but they still wouldn't let him through.

He had to pay for a hotel and a new flight.

unknownn · 28/11/2019 09:02

@lonecatwithkitten no :( my brother said he had done it for me, hes now trying to find the confirmation and hes saying it must have glitched. Which basically means that he never did it and he's making excuses Sad

@FlibbertyGiblets I hate that rush!! Some one very crafty and clever (i have no idea when) has swapped my passport over with a fake dupe. I have no idea when this took place or how cause i have had it close to my chest the whole time. It has been reported and everything but yeah. A load of crap!! So out of order :( My first trip away alone too. All gone awful.

@Touchofclass I'd have been fuming too. Lol!

Looks like i'll probably have to book a hotel near by too. It would work out cheaper paying for a hotel to get a cheaper flight tomorrow.

  1. I got on the wrong train somewhere in Germany AND it broke down, and my phone died and I had hardly any money. That was an adventure. Can’t remember how I talked my way into a room at a hotel or onto a flight the next day but got home eventually.
  2. I was the first person at the gate, started reading a book, looked up to see everyone queuing, must have got very absorbed in the story because next time I looked up it was all empty again.
FlibbertyGiblets · 28/11/2019 09:12

Oh no, I'm so sorry!

Lonecatwithkitten · 28/11/2019 09:32

@unknownn I'm sorry your brother messed that up. My Dad always says 'experience is expensive - but just makes sure you learn from it'.
Number 1 lesson - book own travel insurance, as brother is useless.
Did you speak to your airline before you missed the flight to see if they could transfer you to another flight?

ELM8 · 28/11/2019 09:32

Not sure if this is still the case, but no1 lounge a couple of years ago had screens up with flight times, but no announcements (well aware it's the passengers responsibility to get to the gate on time, but announcements are a useful back up)..

Anyway, a mixture of meeting my best friend there who I hadn't seen in a while so lots to catch up on, and the free flowing drinks meant our attention was not on the screens, or the time Blush

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 28/11/2019 09:39

DH was once travelling with his then boss. Separated in the Connecting airport as they had 90 mins. DH got to connecting gate. No boss. They boarded the plane. No boss. Airline did a call... No boss. They off loaded his bag, DH makes it to home country and has to report he has lost the boss to their driver...

Boss appears at work the next day after a long train journey from Amsterdam to Germany, admitting he had heard the final call but thought it strange there was another passenger with his name!

WhatHaveIFound · 28/11/2019 09:42

Where are you? DH managed to get emergency travel documents in 4 hours in Paris when he had his passport stolen. Luckily he managed to get his original flight.

I've only ever missed a flight due to a connecting one being late but have been pretty close on a few due to traffic/slow security/distance between gates on short connections.

crustycrab · 28/11/2019 09:46

Hold on. Someone has managed to steal your passport from your chest, duplicate it and put it back, whilst you were travelling and you didn't notice? Hmm

SapphosRock · 28/11/2019 09:46

Yes. Left my passport in the hotel safe.

It was BA and no drama they booked me + partner on the next flight and we didn't have to pay any extra.

I really hope you are similarly lucky!

GooseFeather · 28/11/2019 09:47

I was sitting at the gate listening to a particular good audiobook and didn't notice all the people boarding around me. There were no boarding calls or 'Passenger Feather, you are last remaining passenger type announcements. I was there 2 hours early as well, so utterly stupid. Extra flight and a night in a hotel, missing son's nativity play etc. I felt very stupid.

I now don't go to the gate until shortly before boarding so I am more likely to pay attention instead of being distracted by books, even if I am at the airport 2 hours early.

GooseFeather · 28/11/2019 09:48

Not counting all the engineering or weather related inability to make a connection incidents.

Happyspud · 28/11/2019 09:49

Missed my flight because some terrorists flew a bunch of planes into the World Trade Centre and Heathrow stopped checking bags through to destination and added impossible security so I got stuck in transit for many hours trying to get onwards.

TheCanterburyWhales · 28/11/2019 09:49

Eh?
What has your brother done/not done?
You've been caught travelling on a fake passport?
You've had your real one stolen?

Shmithecat2 · 28/11/2019 09:51

I missed a flight once - went online to check in, the booking reference wasn't recognised, I did a quick search - turns out the flight was the day before GrinBlush.

Hasn't happened again...

spacepyramid · 28/11/2019 09:53

Airports now seem to be moving towards no announcements, the last 8 times I've flown (4 different airports) there have been no announcements and signs up saying this is a 'no announcement' airport and look at the screens for your flights.

TaxFool · 28/11/2019 09:54

I'm also puzzled about your passport. Are you saying that someone has swapped your genuine passport with a fake that contains your photo and info!?

Keiki · 28/11/2019 09:56

Remembered the flight time wrong. Took a taxi to the airport in hope of getting there in time. Missed flight. Had to book horrendously expensive new flight the next morning and as a result spent the night at the airport rather than a hotel. Idiot.

tatasa · 28/11/2019 09:56

Taxi turned up late.

unknownn · 28/11/2019 09:58

oh my goodness these make me feel a little better lol.

and for those asking, all i can remember is having it close to my chest, i mean clearly there must have been some moment where it wasn't, the only time i can remember taking it off was when having to take my coat off at security. Whether it was replaced then maybe i have no idea. Im hoping they can get camera footage or something.
