I knew he'd been very poorly for some time. He did well to fight as long as he did.

Oh this is not a good day, Clive James, Johnathan Miller and Gary Rhodes. Fond memories of all of them, they all gave something to this world to be thankful for, Gary epitomised British Cuisine, Jonathan - Beyond the Fringe and Clive, thank you for giving us Margarita Pracatan!

Sad

Darling Clive James. Sad It's so sad; he was so funny, gentle, insightful, original... I'm going to reread all his writings. He was a one-off.

Headunderthecovers · 27/11/2019 17:13

Yes wonderfully clever and insightful writer.

ThisIsSunrise · 27/11/2019 17:15

He was such a great writer, and spoke so well about his impending death. I can't imagine having such clarity of thought and expression.

BillieEilish · 27/11/2019 17:16

OMG, so sad.

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 27/11/2019 17:21

Ah, that is sad. I’ve enjoyed his writing, and always found him so funny on telly.

RIP Mr James.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 27/11/2019 17:41

I am quite surprised to discover he was ‘only’ 80, he seemed to have been around forever. Big, big part of my childhood. Such a clever, witty and, it seemed, kind man. Whilst I joked about Margarita, I just went back to watch a clip of his show when she was on, and it was so lovely to watch his face and delighted little hand clap as she starts playing, quite moving.

Dowser · 27/11/2019 17:44

Didn’t see this thread so mnet hq please delete mine

LoseLooseLucy · 27/11/2019 17:45

Margarita Pracatan!
That's a blast from the past!

RIP Clive Sad

JumpyLiz · 27/11/2019 17:46

Such a shame.

He was on the telly a lot when I was a youngster and I horrified most of my friends by finding him quite sexy! Think it was that twinkle he had in his eye

BoreOfWhabylon · 27/11/2019 17:48

Oh, he was sexy all right!

Lovely, clever, funny man.

RIP Clive

LoseLooseLucy · 27/11/2019 17:50

Haha, he definitely had some sex appeal, the accent helped too 🤔

Rumboogie · 27/11/2019 17:57

That is terribly sad. I was not aware Gary Rhodes had also died (59!), but had heard the news about Johnathan Miller. To add also to those Sir Stephen Cleobury, Director of Music at King's Cambridge, and of the King's College Choir. So many icons.

DarlingNikita · 27/11/2019 18:00

it was so lovely to watch his face and delighted little hand clap as she starts playing, quite moving.

That was such an important quality in a lot of his telly stuff. I remember the one where he showed clips of frankly baffling Japanese TV shows; it could easily have just been 'laughing at funny foreigners' but he seemed to be enjoying it so much and laughing WITH the people in the clips, not AT them. He was so warm.

I hadn't heard about Jonathan Miller or Sir Stephen Cleobury. What a shit couple of days!

ColonelCathcart · 27/11/2019 18:03

Stephen Cleobury - no! Sad

ForalltheSaints · 27/11/2019 18:15

Sadly when I saw him live about 10 years ago it was not a well thought out show. RIP.

BillieEilish · 27/11/2019 18:40

'Deep on the ocean floor, the lava flows'

echt · 27/11/2019 18:57

This is sad. I'm old enough to have watched him as the presenter of Cinema, and followed his work since. While I couldn't alwyay agree with his views, he wrote divinely.

I wonder if he will be buried in Australia? I seem to remember him expressing a wish for this.

Poppet1974 · 27/11/2019 19:16

RIP Clive Star

UrsulaPandress · 27/11/2019 19:18

Loved listening to him.

Intelligence is always sexy.

PerkingFaintly · 27/11/2019 19:23

Just what I was thinking, Judashascomeintosomemoney, and Stephen Cleobury, as someone said.

Been a sad week.

Such wonderful work they'll all be remembered for. It'll be incredibly sad listening to the Nine Lessons and Carols this year.

Spotsbeforemyeyes · 27/11/2019 19:29

I met Clive James a couple of times, I once showed him how to set up the video recorder to record a programme whilst he and my then employer ( was a nanny) went out to dinner. Such a lovely man.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 27/11/2019 19:29

@echt I saw somewhere that he died on the 24th and that his funeral was a private affair today in Cambridge (I think at Pembroke). Guess his body/ashes could still go back to Australia though. Is his wife English or an Aussie do you know?

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 27/11/2019 19:49

It’s only coming back to the thread that has alerted me to Stephen Cleobury’s sad demise, Carols from Kings will be even more poignant this year. And yes, Clive James was sexy. I was a teenager when ‘....On TV’ was airing but that’s exactly what I (secretly) thought. I also thought I might be in a minority but maybe not! As pp said, intelligence is sexy. A fitting James quote:
‘Stop worrying -- nobody gets out of this world alive’
