I knew he'd been very poorly for some time. He did well to fight as long as he did.

I loved his writing in The Observer when I was a kid - so rude, funny and insightful. It was about the only part of the newspaper I could read and I loved it. It was the first thing I turned to for years. RIP

Yes we had the Observer on a Sunday and his TV reviews were so funny. Think it was the “Dallas” era. His Sunday review was required reading.

sad to hear this news I love Clive James. Had quite a crush as a teenager (that never went away)

One of my favourite books is Unreliable Memoirs the thought of Flash of Lightening always makes me snort. Shall again listen to it (of course read by Clive himself) it’s hilarious and very touching at times

His reviews were always funny as was his Sunday tv show just remembering him saying Endurance with that glint in his eyes makes me smile

Very sad about Clive James😢Read his books as a teenager . In my Higher English exam I was delighted to see his text was used as the comprehension passage ... only exam I laughed in . He autographed the exam paper for my friend .

Really sad about this. Loved his books and poetry. Think I have everything he published.

stucknoue · 27/11/2019 21:54

Definitely a sad week, I've met 3/4 of them by chance over the years (a love of book festivals!) and my kids have sung with Stephen cleobury making 4/4.

@echt I saw somewhere that he died on the 24th and that his funeral was a private affair today in Cambridge (I think at Pembroke). Guess his body/ashes could still go back to Australia though. Is his wife English or an Aussie do you know?

His wife is English.

Ah, I think I’ll have to look out some of his work.

DarlingNikita · 28/11/2019 10:46

I've reserved the first lot of his memoirs at the library and am going to buy Clive James on TV (all his Observer columns together!). I'm going to read a Clive poem a day until I've (re)read them all too.

Partly as a goodbye thing but also it's a great motivator to read some truly superb writing.

Marcipex · 28/11/2019 10:57

RIP Clive.

I re-read "Unreliable Memoirs" today; the last paragraph (echoing The Great Gatsby now I think of it) speaks of the pull of the past.

Tip-top writing.
