Am I the only one not to get the hype over “The Crown”?

Started watching this week after multiple recommendations but it’s boring me rigid. Currently there’s an episode on in the background about who becomes the queens private secretary. I’m so bored I am MNing while it’s on! From what I’ve seen so far there’s so much focus on small details and it’s so drawn out. Are all 3 series so slow moving? If so I will give up now!

I'm enjoying it overall, but there is a lot of detail and quite a lot of meaningful staring and rumbling thunder in the distance. It also helps if you were around at the time so you have afighting chance of knowing who everyone is!

Meruem · 25/11/2019 21:15

Oh my gosh yes, the meaningful staring takes up a good quarter of each episode! It is interesting seeing the Queen torn between what she wants and what is “right” for her position but I just wish it moved along a little quicker.

I was extremely sceptical about it and then began to watch it during the Christmas holidays last year. I got hooked and watched seasons one and two in succession. I am saving series three until the Christmas holidays when I can watch at my leisure.
It does move quite slowly, but I like that - makes it seem more realistic imo.

I must admit it did have a slow start but its worth it. When you get going on the scandals it's brilliant

FaithInfinity · 26/11/2019 07:58

I enjoyed it because I am interested in modern history. The story line is historically accurate, the conversations were made up. I think it gets better as their lives change. I’ve watched all of series 3 now. Wondering who will play Maggie Thatcher and Diana!

HairyToity · 26/11/2019 08:04

I quite like it. I just watch it when I'm knackered, and want some escapism with no concentration required. It's the pure extravagance that I love. Blush

MaryBerrysChutney · 26/11/2019 08:07

This season has been dire. I am missing Claire and can't seem to warm to Olivia Coleman as the Queen.

NeverGotMyPuppy · 26/11/2019 08:07

I love it I'm afraid. Apart from the episode on Aberfan which was just so upsetting Sad

Limpshade · 26/11/2019 08:08

@FaithInfinity Margaret Thatcher will be played by my fave Gillian Anderson!

Diana an actress called Emma Corrin (no idea, sorry Emma Blush)

Limpshade · 26/11/2019 08:10

OP you will find that's the style pretty much all of the way through but yes, it deals with a few juicer moments as the series goes on. But I love the lavishness of the sets, scenery, costumes, etc. I would quite happily watch in on mute just for that!

Eminybob · 26/11/2019 09:25

I loved it from episode 1.
Series 3 wasn’t as good as the first 2 imo but I was still gutted when I realised I’d finished it. Eagerly anticipating series 4.

fussychica · 26/11/2019 09:47

Unfortunately this season the makers have decided to dispense with historical accuracy on a number of occasions rather than just fictionalising conversations. I think this is a real mistake and most people watching will assume it's what really happened rather than realising it's a fictionalised account.

I am a republican. I don’t like the royals, therefore would not waste my time watching this.

Toddlerteaplease · 26/11/2019 11:57

Watched it once but gave up when I watched the scene where Queen Mary is told of George VI's death. It was completely different to how it was documented in the diary of the lady in waiting who broke it too her. I'm a stickler for correct historical detail!

Damntheman · 26/11/2019 12:13

I enjoy it, but can understand why it isn't for everyone. The Aberfan episode absolutely broke me, but then I knew that it would and was kind of dreading it as soon as I realised which part of history they were portraying.

VanyaHargreeves · 26/11/2019 12:21

I enjoy the Crown, preferred the old cast though

I don't particularly enjoy "am I the only one who" threads

The answer is always and obviously of course not

GlitchStitch · 26/11/2019 12:45

I watched the first episode last week, just found it boring and felt no urge to watch the next one. Started Prison Break instead, now that has me hooked!

managedmis · 26/11/2019 13:15

Meh, you're not selling me on this. I'll stick to The Princess Switch

Rainbowtheunicorn · 26/11/2019 13:17

I love it.

DH hates it and finds it boring- same with Downton Abbey!

Tableclothing · 26/11/2019 13:20

I'm currently half way through season 3, and I think you'd probably get on well with the script writers; they don't seem to like the royals much either.

What a strange statement. This isn't a Royal fanfest, it's a historical drama depicting true events. Even if you're not interested in the history (strange to avoid any history that involves monarchy though... there's a lot of it!) it still works as entertainment.

I enjoy the Crown and I'm a republican, too.

TwattingDog · 26/11/2019 13:40

I'm enjoying it. DH is an historical drama fanatic, and he got me into this, and Victoria.

Aberfan - my god. I knew the story very well as I work in H&S, but dear god it was heart-rending. Just so terrible.

FaithInfinity · 26/11/2019 21:45

That episode sent shivers down my spine. Their worst fear realised, standing there watching, helpless.

PenelopeFlintstone · 26/11/2019 21:49

I’ve not watched any of The Crown yet but I’ll give it a go based on this thread.
Toddlerteaplease - could you elaborate please? What did the diary say? I’ll keep it in mind when I watch it. Thanks

IdentifyasTired · 26/11/2019 22:42

Series 1 and 2 I love love love. Pip Torrens as Tommy Lascelles is just brilliant.
Series 3 was less good. I miss the old cast, especially the Queen Mother. I didn’t get the series 3 casting for her at all.
