Buying PlayStation for Christmas, anyone help me?

I don’t know much about them, dc have decided against Xbox which I agree as most of the games are higher age ratings. So looking at a PlayStation... is there only one ‘type’? I’m not sure what I’m looking for?

I’m hoping to try to get a Black Friday deal so want to work out what we need first? Are they digital or disk? I don’t want a just digital one?

Thanks so turn it on and is it quite obvious? First thing create my account, do they have to be with me to do theirs? Was hoping to get it set up without them with me but they will presumably have to chose some sort of username?

Another person planning on buying one for Christmas! Do we have to pay the subscription service if my DS wants to play minecraft online with his friends?

chomalungma · 26/11/2019 06:57

I think that if you want to play online with friends, then you need the online account which you pay for.

doritosdip · 26/11/2019 07:13

OP Make a parent account. Do all system updates using the parent account. Then put each game disc in and do the game updates for each game. This will save you a few hours on Xmas Day.

Each child can have their own account and pick their gamer tag (user name) You could save that but for Xmas day but it depends on their age, ability to wait and whether or not they know about getting a console. My son doesn't play his console on Xmas Eve evenings as he knows I have to update his new games for Xmas Day and he'd rather I do it beforehand so he can play sooner rather than later.

We have PS4 pro 1tb it's pretty good and you can even watch sky through it.

SexlessBoulderBelly · 26/11/2019 07:28

I got a perfectly good one sitting on our living room unit.

Free to a good home.

Disclaimer: it’s cursed or my DP is a knob . It’s been the burden of many fatalities in the last few weeks. DP innocently playing CoD, shooting and killing any man that gets in his way. While I’m showering and the puppy is being a unwatched puppy. I come out of the shower to find my day old brand new expensive boots with the zips chewed off. I am deflated.

But now, we’ve just spent £600+ on brand new carpet for the stairs and landing, how blissful, right?! Well again DP oh so innocently playing CoD, killing any man who gets in his way, while I’m in the bath and the puppy is being a unwatched puppy. I Come out of the bath to find our no more than a week old brand new blissfully soft carpet torn up and the puppy chewing away at the corner of it.

Don’t get a PlayStation... or a puppy. They are the doom of life.

With regards to your 4K question.... 4K refers to an enhanced picture quality (that is 4x the number of pixels) compared to standard HD. Its a bit more complex than that but it means a picture in 4k displays 4x the detail of HD. In other words a sharper picture.
Dont worry if your TV isnt 4k, a ps4 or ps4 pro will fine on it.

Jeep2314 · 26/11/2019 09:37

The best way to find out would be to pit the make and model into the Internet and search for it. All that info should be on the TV some where, more than likely on back.

I would add although having a 4k TV for a Ps4 pro is fantastic it's not necessary.

The difference between 4k and non 4k tv(1080p) is picture clarity. Simply put older tvs would be 1080p and a 4k has a picture quality 4 times great that that of 1080p tv's.

Having a ps4 pro has soo much more to offer than just picture quality.

Disco3000 · 26/11/2019 09:42

PS4 is amazing and will still be selling when the 5 comes out so buy new somewhere in the Black Friday deals.

Jeep2314 · 26/11/2019 09:44

I would suggest don't leave the children in charge of the puppy. You're asking for a trouble regardless wether or not you have a PlayStation.

I've got 6 dogs and all from pup. I've never had any thing torn up apart from their toys. It's all about what you do with them while they are active.

Wonderingwhyme · 26/11/2019 10:52

@Jeep2314 I don’t have a puppy! That wasn’t me that was SexlessBoulderBelly*. Sorry to hear about the carpets!

They do know it’s ‘possibly’ coming, I said only if I could get a decent deal in Black Friday.

Every single game has to be updated before you play it?! Wow. To be fair, to start with they will only have about 2/3 disks just down to the cost. Is it only once I have to do this? Not each time??

@Wonderingwhyme if u don't want brand new you can get a PS4 for £175 from CEX comes with 2 years warranty just in case you are thinking of upgrading to the ps5 next year.

gamerchick · 26/11/2019 11:29

Updates do happen but not every time and it tells you when there's one. It's just a click of the controller.

Honestly OP, you're making it sound harder than it is Grin

Jeep2314 · 26/11/2019 11:31

Sorry @Wonderingwhyme, I'm not sure how I managed to get it so wrong.

Still good advise for anyone 🤔😋👍

Wonderingwhyme · 26/11/2019 12:11

Yes good advice Grin

Yes @gamerchick I probably am! I hate technology, it stresses me out! Just trying to make sure iv asked all the stupid questions before it’s all sat in front of me! Grin

They can’t decide between them wether to go PlayStation or Xbox. Today youngest says Xbox as he wants forza something or other the car game and PlayStation don’t make it! I don’t dare care which they have!

BarbedBloom · 27/11/2019 20:50

Just jumping in to say you can order from CEX online, in case you didn't realise. I bought a 3ds xl on there yesterday and it arrived today.

BarbedBloom · 27/11/2019 20:51

If they can't decide, find out what their friends are on. My DH has a ps4 as no one he knows has an xbox

BarbedBloom · 27/11/2019 20:52

Oh and lastly, yes every single game may need an update. It may be worth setting it up xmas eve to download updates as the servers will be crazy on xmas day

Wonderingwhyme · 27/11/2019 20:54

They appear to have a mix. Youngest more Xbox, eldest isn’t sure as he doesn’t link other than playing fortnite which he does on the laptop. Iv asked him to ask his friends tomorrow. I see Tesco are meant to be doing a very good deal on Xbox for Black Friday if I can get to a store.

The Ps3 was released in 2006 and the last game for it was produced in 2018. The ps4 was released in 2013 so buy my calculations games will be produced for the Ps4 and Ps4 Pro well into 2025. So don't worry it's got plenty of life left in it.

This might be a bit misleading. The PS3 had a much longer pre-upgrade life because the PS4 didn't come out until 2016. So in fact, it's likely that the PS4 will continue to have games made for it for a couple of years after the PS5 launch, so more like until 2022. Still, plenty long enough.
