Since when has a size 12 been XXL?

Saw a nice dress in H&M and they deem a size 12 to be an XXL. What type of message is this sending out to young girls. I don't normally worry as I know sizes come up different in lots of shops but surely this is crazy!

A size 12 in H&M is an M not XXL...

Angela9 · 24/11/2019 12:28

I think That's an error

ShanghaiDiva · 24/11/2019 12:31

US size 12 which would be a UK 16?
Still not XXL though.

Koloh · 24/11/2019 12:33

Lol, in the far off distant 90s I was a modern size 12 and an XXL in sample sizes. That was a shock to discover!

But I think in this case it's probably just a mistake.

GrumpyHoonMain · 24/11/2019 12:33

A size 16 (US size 12) is an XXL in some shops (including Mango / H&M). A UK size 12 is a medium.

which1 · 24/11/2019 12:37

How did you deduce that?
Normally they just put a number eg 8 or 14, or S or XL.
They don't normally put both.

Bluntness100 · 24/11/2019 12:38

Many places are doing this now, I recently bought a size twelve biker jacket, it was tiny, more like a ten, and it was labelled xxl also. I'm also bemused by it.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 24/11/2019 13:39

Good God. It’s small wonder we have a bloody epidemic of eating disorders.

BikeRunSki · 24/11/2019 13:41

Since cycling gear....

DirtyTicket · 24/11/2019 13:44

H&M sizing is utterly ridiculous anyway. I'm a size 8/10 and the last time I shopped in there, I took loads of sizes in with me, knowing how poor their sizing is.

One pair of size 8 shorts were huge on me, a size 12 pair of jeans wouldn't go over my knees. I gave up in the end.

BarbaraofSeville · 24/11/2019 14:17

Oh yes, cycling gear. Luckily I'm made of stern stuff so I wasn't emotionally scarred by the XL mountain bike shorts that were too small, I'm a size 14.

Sizing is too random to make any sense of, I have other cycling shorts from the same brand. The mediums fit me but a slightly different style in a large are too small. Both pairs were bigger than the XL pair that had to go back.

Boristhecats · 24/11/2019 15:34

I bought a size 12 top the other day. The other size on the label was XL. Imma size 12 for Christ sake. That is not huge. No idea when this kind of sizing came in. But it is awful and made me feel terrible. I know I’m a few sizes bigger than I should be. But I had no idea a 12 was an XL

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 24/11/2019 15:42

I was looking at a website for some workout leggings. Size 10-12 UK size was deemed to be large.

fallfallfall · 24/11/2019 15:50

Well if it’s made in China, Chinese people might very well think a size 12 is XXL.
Sizing is bonkers, never ever consistent even with the same brand, different styles different sizes.

SpaceCadet4000 · 24/11/2019 16:01

That can't be right... I'm in the US but H&M has XXL as a US 20 (UK 24) and it looks the same on the UK site. UK 12 is a medium from memory.

Have you got a link to the dress?

Branleuse · 24/11/2019 16:07

there is not much consistency to H&M sizing tbh, bt in general sizing has got worse since the influx of online shopping from asian countries.

tinyfierce · 24/11/2019 16:32

Oh give it a rest. Due to vanity sizing H&M is the last place on the high street that I can buy clothes that fit me.

Scotinthenorth · 24/11/2019 16:34

Probably from China. Size 12 is XXL there

astralweaks · 24/11/2019 16:47

Error.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 24/11/2019 16:51

I bought a walking dead T shirt online that is an xxl and I'm a 12 .

Sarcelle · 24/11/2019 16:52

I am a size 12/14. In H & M I fit in the 8s and 10s. Crazy sizing.

Apple for double post

ElspethFlashman · 24/11/2019 16:55

In Zara a 12 is a Large. I confirmed it with a SA as I was asking for a 14.

"Sorry, we only do XL in limited items"
"Wait, you mean a 12 is a Large?!"
"Yeah"

DontCallMeShitley · 24/11/2019 17:10

Sounds like the Chinese sizing.

If you buy a Chinese made size 10 you need arms with no flesh to get the sleeves on, and an XXL is still small.
