A Royal Referendum - How would you vote?

Nikhedonia · 19/11/2019 01:22

I know that this wouldn't be how it would work, but please humour me Smile

If there was a referendum where the options were to either keep the Royal Family or get rid (after the Queen dies) how would you vote?

(Ignoring the fact that this isn't how it would work and if Brexit has gone like this, doing a deal with the Royal Family could be just as painful)

I'm genuinely not sure how I'd vote.

Keep.

You don't know what you’ve got til it’s gone.

TulipsTulipsTulips · 19/11/2019 22:05

Keep but reform massively

MollyWeasleysWizardsSleeve · 19/11/2019 22:08

Not sure.
Pros to keep: tradition, royal wedding fever (love or hate it), the chance of extra bank holidays now and again for jubilees and such [grins]. Also they do do a lot of valuable charity work.

Pros of get rid: One family shouldn't be elevated to such status, a lot of them are useless and the newer generation are awful.

Get rid. The idea that they promote stability is a toxic fiction.

auditoryhallucinations · 19/11/2019 22:08

Keep 100%.

floffel · 19/11/2019 22:09

GET RID!

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 19/11/2019 22:10

Keep

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 19/11/2019 22:11

Keep. But trimmed.

Cam77 · 19/11/2019 22:12

Get rid. Have an elected ceremonial head of state like Ireland.

HolyShmoly · 19/11/2019 22:13

Keep to an extent, but publicise the houses and grounds, etc. Make them make money rather than cost money.
Let's stop pretending they are anything other than a tourism thing.

fikel · 19/11/2019 22:14

Get rid

DareDevil223 · 19/11/2019 22:19

Get rid (and I'd do it tonight given the chance).

Nikhedonia · 19/11/2019 23:54

I think I've decided that I'd vote to get rid now.

People would visit the Palaces/Castles etc and there might even be an increase to tourism as they'd actually be able to visit them properly and all year round. Buckingham Palace could be a Royal Museum.

On another note, what would happen if you met a Royal and refused to bow/curtesy?

Once the Queen passes I think the the RF should be abolished.

minipie · 20/11/2019 00:03

Get rid. Cannot believe we still have them tbh.

Austriana · 20/11/2019 00:10

Get rid

Waterandlemonjuice · 20/11/2019 00:12

Get rid of them all and open up all the royal palaces to tourists with the proceeds going to charities

sue51 · 20/11/2019 00:18

Nikhedonia. In answer to your question. Nothing would happen.

Speakeasy22 · 20/11/2019 05:25

Get rid. Completely outdated and unhealthy concept that some people deserve privilege and respect without earning it.

avocadoincident · 20/11/2019 05:32

Off with their heads

CrumpetyTea · 20/11/2019 05:42

Rid
There was an analysis done years ago (I think part of a BBC programme) on the impact of the monarchy and it looked at some of the myths/views- one that I remember being discussed was the impact on tourism and it was impossible to prove that actually having royals made any difference - compared with somewhere like France for example.
I find the entire idea of someone being seen as superior to me/anyone purely because of their birth as morally repugnant. Prince Charles really believes he has the right to rule, to interfere in policies and override decisions purely on the basis of his birth - how can anyone stomach this?

Marcipex · 20/11/2019 05:53

Get rid.
But if I had to keep, then massively pared down. Only the direct line and not all the cousins etc.

Nikhedonia · 20/11/2019 09:56

@sue51 thank you Smile

This, in spades.

I find the entire idea of someone being seen as superior to me/anyone purely because of their birth as morally repugnant

Yep.

I recall a 'famous people' thread on here once where a poster met Prince Edward at some sort of function and he said "You can call me Sir". Said poster took off sharpish rather than kowtow to the useless twonk.

I have noticed, though, that PW is more of a handshake man than someone who expects to be bowed or curtseyed to, so perhaps there is progress on that front.
