A Royal Referendum - How would you vote?

Nikhedonia · 19/11/2019 01:22

I know that this wouldn't be how it would work, but please humour me Smile

If there was a referendum where the options were to either keep the Royal Family or get rid (after the Queen dies) how would you vote?

(Ignoring the fact that this isn't how it would work and if Brexit has gone like this, doing a deal with the Royal Family could be just as painful)

I'm genuinely not sure how I'd vote.

Get rid! Completely outdated and drain on the public purse. Don’t relish a President Johnson though!

IdblowJonSnow · 19/11/2019 16:22

Until v recently keep. In light of recent events, looking at you 'prince' Andrew, I'd get rid. But post queen as it seems mean when she's been so respected/respectable for all these years.

noodlenosefraggle · 19/11/2019 16:22

tooextramature I'd like a fantasy constitutional reform too. Ceremonial elected head of State, elected upper house, proportional representation, Fewer MP's. I quite like the fixed term Parliaments Act. It's only the Brexit debacle that has caused problems with it. Prime Ministers used to get a massive advantage being able to call elections when it suited the parties in power. In more sensible times, there would be nothing wrong with the ftpa.

Get rid, it is outdated even in a modernised slim line version.

JeansNTees · 19/11/2019 16:25

Get rid. Long gone are the days that we think that God chose a ruling family and they can therefore rule over us, being a direct link to heaven. It's a disgrace.

Andahelterskelterroundmylittle · 19/11/2019 16:35

Ditch

Genderwitched · 19/11/2019 16:37

I love the Queen, but when she goes the rest of them can sling their hooks.

mindproject · 19/11/2019 16:45

Get rid immediately.

I cannot understand why so many are saying keep. Is it the strong links to paedophilia and child murder you enjoy (Epstein, Savile, Mohawk children) or is it the complete contempt they have for you?

Referendums seem to prove that the British people are incapable of making good decisions. So I don't think we should have one on this.

Bezalelle · 19/11/2019 16:55

Get rid.

But @yasle it's a principle. Are we to believe that some people are inherently born to rule? That implies we also believe others are born to serve. It also implies that rich = better when we see every day that that is, in fact, not the case.

Are you happy for your kids to learn that there's a pecking order in this country, and they're automatically near the bottom, no matter what kind of person they are?

I'm not. I can't believe the brass neck, especially of those who marry in. One day,
Camilla was a rich old serial philanderer, the next she's royalty and people curtsy - actually curtsy - in her presence.

It's the 21st century. Can we honestly not try harder than this to show our children that it's about merit and that spunking the money of Nazi sympathisers all over the country is not to be admired?

ForalltheSaints · 19/11/2019 18:29

I would keep the monarchy. One with fewer members and with no formal or unwritten power at all, merely ceremonial.

RedSheep73 · 19/11/2019 18:30

Get rid. Without a second thought.

Dowser · 19/11/2019 19:11

Time for them to be shown the door.

We will thank PA in years to come for shining a light on everything wrong with this archaic system and the one family benefiting from it.

When he describes a shooting weekend..as just an ordinary event , then it’s time to be given the royal order of the boot for being so out of touch with mere mortals like you or me here....who probably would never have the chance to engage in something like this...even if we wanted it to

Thank you PA ..the royal gravy train has just taken a detour into a siding..and you are the first to get off.you and your obnoxious family.

The palaces can be open as history museums...all year round..run by a skeleton staff.

What about all of thos grace and favour apartments..for the so called
‘ minor ‘ royals...
Then theres Balmoral Castle. Balmoral Castle, Aberdeenshire. ...
Sandringham House. Sandringham House, Norfolk. ...
Windsor Castle. Windsor Castle, Berkshire. ...
Osborne House. Osborne House, Isle of Wight. ...
Clarence House. Clarence House, London. ...
St James's Palace. St James's Palace, London. ...
Kensington Palace.
Holy food Edinburgh
Hills borough n ireland

This is just a small list ..there’s more.

They really are past their sell by date. Do they really bring lots of tourism in? Wouldn’t people from abroad still come to see the royal houses/ palaces. We could still have the pageantry associated with them.

How much does it cost The country to protect each and every one of them...and why.

Also scrap the honours lists as well

WellGoshDarnIt · 19/11/2019 19:23

Get rid. The tourism argument is pish anyway - the most visited tourist attraction in the world is the Palace of Versailles, and the lack of French royalty doesn't seem to have hindered that. People will come to gawp whether there's a RF or not.

lljkk · 19/11/2019 20:00

I would hope for Keep but doubt I'd vote. As a naturalised Brit citizen I've always felt I had no right to criticise or really comment on some institutions, eg. Monarchy.

Not that anyone asked... but I would like a House of Lords (they should keep the name for tradition's sake) that was formulated to reflect the raw voting %s. What Billy Bragg proposes, basically.

The Anti-Royalists need to start a discussion about what kind of role they want to replace the Monarch (elected President?)

*DS might get to be a Buckingham Palace guard in 2020 (!!)

WokingPizza · 19/11/2019 20:45

I come from a family where shooting is normal (not my choice) and quite a lot of rural people are quite bigoted (massive generalisation, but true in my experience).

That doesn't excuse him screwing people he hasn't even checked the age of.

Bananacentral · 19/11/2019 20:53

100% keep!!!...love the royal family

WokingPizza · 19/11/2019 21:09

@Bananacentral. Did you see the documentary?

lljkk · 19/11/2019 21:30

I have (not British) relatives who love the Royals, went to lots of 'Royal' linked places when they visited London. They might not have bothered with London/UK visit but for the Royals.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 19/11/2019 21:56

quite a lot of rural people are quite bigoted (massive generalisation, but true in my experience)
I'm not even sure what point you're trying to make in relation to the Royals, but do us all a favour and lay off the 'massive generalisations'.

dutchmaster · 19/11/2019 21:57

keep -streamlined.

ssd · 19/11/2019 21:58

Get fecking rid.

CantStandMeow · 19/11/2019 21:59

Nutellalovesme · 19/11/2019 22:00
