A Royal Referendum - How would you vote?

Nikhedonia · 19/11/2019 01:22

I know that this wouldn't be how it would work, but please humour me Smile

If there was a referendum where the options were to either keep the Royal Family or get rid (after the Queen dies) how would you vote?

(Ignoring the fact that this isn't how it would work and if Brexit has gone like this, doing a deal with the Royal Family could be just as painful)

I'm genuinely not sure how I'd vote.

Definitely get rid, and the entire aristocracy too. Completely agree with @TooTrueToBeGood.
It’s an unfair system that pervades our society in a negative way.
We could have a figurehead president.

derxa · 19/11/2019 13:47

Keep I love the drama.

Everycloud12 · 19/11/2019 14:01

How many tourists actually get to even glimpse a royal? Open up more royal residences and the tourists will flock in.

I don't understand people who would be happy for a system to continue where some a born "better" than others. If we had no monarchy you can guarantee that we'd be sneering at less developed nations with monarchies and calling them backward and archaic.

That should’ve said money drain

IfWishesWereFishes · 19/11/2019 14:11

Get rid.

Not one of those fuckers is a better person than anyone I know. And we're meant to bow and scrape in front of them, consider them our betters, and pay for their existence?

It's a terrible basis on which to run a country.

AdaColeman · 19/11/2019 14:15

Get rid of all of them.

Exactly - it's a terrible basis on which to run anything, it's everything we're trying to change about society, surely? Misplaced un-earned status and deference.

safariboot · 19/11/2019 14:54

Keep, because I feel the alternative would be an elected President. Another politician, another election. A person who will in principle have a lot of power and may feel they're entitled to use it in a way the Queen has not. Possible wrangling over the British constitution, especially if we try to go to a codified constitution which could "lock in" mistakes and shortcomings.

I'd rather not have any of that.

Zenithbear · 19/11/2019 15:01

Get rid. Superior scroungers with useless lives thinking they are above us.

I'm on the fence at the moment. I'd like to see a massive constitutional overhaul that included the role of the monarchy - what exactly is the point in the Queen dutifully reading and signing every bit of legislation when she can affect them less than I can? I can at least vote - the Queen can't/doesn't. What is the point in having her deliver a queen's speech written for her by the current party of government?

However, I'll take the point about soft diplomacy - although I'm not sure Prince Philip is a great argument for that one! The monarch could carry on hosting state dinners and being charming to visiting heads of state etc. I'm all for slimming down the support for minor royals, though.

The constitutional reform would include sorting out things like MPs maternity leave, first past the post etc. Getting in a proper system for sacking MPs if they commit gross misconduct (to be defined in line with most workplace policies). Increasing MPs responsibilities eg if caught blatantly lying/ignoring spending rules/misusing public funds/accepting funding from corrupt regimes, they get sacked (cough, Boris). Cutting down on late night voting sessions and unnecessary pomp and circumstance (even if it does look cool). Abolishing or rewriting the Fixed Term Parliaments Act. There'll be plenty more I haven't thought of!

Whatsitlike · 19/11/2019 15:38

End of the Royals for me after the Queen dies, no more.

Slim down.

Fredy45 · 19/11/2019 16:14

Slim down. I like the pomp and history and have a lot of time for some and their charitable endeavours.

Like the queen and understand she has a wealth of experience no one else has when it comes to soft diplomacy, the constitution etc. Was reading something about how much her views are respected by her prime ministers because of this.

But no need for others. Anything other than direct heirs.

I thought the stamp collections were family collections because George V was a massive stamp geek? How could you remove those then?

noodlenosefraggle · 19/11/2019 16:16

Ditch after the Queen dies

yasle · 19/11/2019 16:17

I don’t understand why anyone gives a shit that a tiny tiny number of people are born “better” than the rest of us. It doesn’t impact us at all. I have been here decades and never glimpsed a royal, much less had to show my “worseness” by curtsying or something.

They are net positive financially for the UK.

FattyCutty · 19/11/2019 16:20

After Betty gets her gilded wings the others can all bugger off and we back all the land and properties that we pay for.

Two words outlining a fantastic reason to keep the Royal Family : President Trump!!
