Embarrassed myself - massive faux pas

I don’t think I can face going back to the park again Blush

My dog has a thing against black dogs. Spoken to a trainer when we’ve been to classes and apparently some dogs don’t like black dogs because they can’t make out their facial features as well to assess the dogs reactions.

Anyway we were in the park today and a woman with a black dog was coming towards us, I could see my dog was getting anxious so I put her on the lead to walk past.

As the woman walked past me she said is your dog not good with other dogs? I replied oh she just doesn’t like black dogs Blush she looked at me like I was a weirdo raising a racist dog, she walked quickly past so I didn’t have chance to explain either.

My dog gets anxious around other dogs, especially if they’re jumping round her, so why couldn’t I have just said that instead!?

Grin at the idea of a racist dog.

Mine hates black people with a passion. Actually anyone with a complexion much darker than a tan. I wonder if it's the same reason, aren't dogs supposed to be colourblind? Perhaps that's it, their facial features aren't as clear to her. But then she's fine with black dogs so who knows. They can be strange creatures sometimes. She also doesn't like pugs and has an unrivaled hatred of ironing boards or anything ironing board shaped. Who knows what goes on in their heads.

Wizzbangpop · 16/11/2019 22:27

I have a black dog and it is a thing. People's reaction when they realise what they've said Confused

If it makes any difference said dog doesn't seem to like dogs of a German origin ( dachshunds and German shepherds to be precise)

Don't worry! My dog is Viszla-ist.

ContessaLovesTheSunshine · 16/11/2019 22:34

I think my cats may have this. We once adopted a black male cat who was a right bruiser and beat up our other boy; therefore sadly we had to rehome him. Bizarrely, since then every cat that's tried to bully ours off their own territory seems to have been black Confused I don't think this has helped!!

We have recently adopted a black kitten in hopes of persuading ours to see past fur colour and cos she is adorable - they are wary but seem to be adapting as she is a bit of a klutz baby and clearly not in control of her own legs half the time Grin

SoggySockRage · 16/11/2019 22:44

One of mine is similar.

Sadly, his brother is the most sociable daft brush ever, and when out walking on their split lead, it is a battle of wills. Love vs hate.

Hate is fatter, and usually wins by throwing down the anchors.

Witchend · 16/11/2019 22:45

My granny's dog had a thing about Afghan Hounds. He was a right Scooby Doo most of the time with other dogs but he used to go for them.
We never worked out why.

SoggySockRage · 16/11/2019 22:45

Just reread that... the dogs are not called Love and Hate 😂

Eckhart · 16/11/2019 22:47

@nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut Ironing boards! Haha!

MarkingTimeIm59 · 16/11/2019 22:48

I’ve got two black dogs OP. I wouldn’t have taken offence.

EleanorReally · 16/11/2019 22:49

why on earth would that be embarrassing.
it is well known.

Cuddling57 · 16/11/2019 22:59

I have never heard of this! My dog loves everyone!
Could explain why some don't like him though. He is brown though. I think they are just jealous of his cuteness Wink

EatDiamondsForBreakfast · 16/11/2019 23:01

Haha Halloween Grin so funny !

Doingtheboxerbeat · 16/11/2019 23:02

I'm feeling really sad now, imagining a friendly, waggy dog getting nothing but grief for their efforts. I have always had a black lab on my lottery shopping list (lottery win is necessary as I can buy a big house with a giant garden and give up work and go travelling with him).

Notthecarwashagain · 16/11/2019 23:07

My dog isn't keen on anything black dogs either.
She usually barks at them, and one (rare) time she went past one without barking, a dog walking behind us did instead!

It's really common, and you haven't made a faux pas, imo.
It's not like you said something like "my dog doesn't like ugly dogs"
Don't worry!

CottonHeadedNinyMuggins · 16/11/2019 23:08

My poor old girl (sadly now passed) didn't like black dogs either.

She wasn't entirely keen on any dogs really - but that was cos she was a proper lady who thought she was human and adored humans but black dogs she was particularly against.

There was one exception to her 'i'm too good for you!' rule with all other dogs and that was Harvey (from the advert with the rabbit) who was also Sykes in Midsomer Murders. She went mental everytime he was on screen.

VividImagination · 16/11/2019 23:08

I have two black Labradors and lots of people have said that to me. Strangely, a lot of these dogs are then friendly towards my older dog and I get exclamations of surprise from their owners. I think he must give off friendly vibes.

RoseDog · 16/11/2019 23:08

My last dog didn't like black dogs and a trainer said the reason was she couldnt read their facial expression!

Our current dog hates staffies she herself is a bloody staffie Hmm

Megan2018 · 16/11/2019 23:08

My 2 white chickens regularly beat up my brown chickens, they are known as the KKK Blush it is most disconcerting.

Megan2018 · 16/11/2019 23:11

Sorry posted too soon-I think lots of animals are like this. I have a dark brown (almost black) horse that doesn’t like greys.
It would only be embarrassing if the owner was black and took it personally. Not a faux pas

Notthecarwashagain · 16/11/2019 23:11

Oh! I just remembered my carpet fitter telling me that his dog doesn't like black dogs-and his dog is black Grin

MargotLovedTom1 · 16/11/2019 23:13

Our old Goldie was the softest, most chilled out dog ever...with a huge fetish for male, black Labs. Any other breed of dog he'd meet he'd politely sniff and play with happily; however if he caught sight of a strapping black Lab then he'd get a lascivious glint in his eye and try to mount the poor bemused creature. I was constantly on Lab alert when out walking.

Yestermo · 16/11/2019 23:14

Dogs can be racist as a learnt behaviour. Our rescue dog was, it was really embarrassing with our neighbours as it was pretty obvious.

MarianaMoatedGrange · 16/11/2019 23:17

has an unrivaled hatred of ironing boards or anything ironing board shaped

I'm the same. Haven't ironed anything in decades Grin

Clymene · 16/11/2019 23:19

My dog doesn't like white dogs 🤷🏼‍♀️
