Embarrassed myself - massive faux pas

I don’t think I can face going back to the park again Blush

My dog has a thing against black dogs. Spoken to a trainer when we’ve been to classes and apparently some dogs don’t like black dogs because they can’t make out their facial features as well to assess the dogs reactions.

Anyway we were in the park today and a woman with a black dog was coming towards us, I could see my dog was getting anxious so I put her on the lead to walk past.

As the woman walked past me she said is your dog not good with other dogs? I replied oh she just doesn’t like black dogs Blush she looked at me like I was a weirdo raising a racist dog, she walked quickly past so I didn’t have chance to explain either.

My dog gets anxious around other dogs, especially if they’re jumping round her, so why couldn’t I have just said that instead!?

Hahaha - my collie doesn't like small white fluffy dogs or - quite specifically - miniature schnauzers. Normal old schnauzers are fine.

Also has recently decided that people carrying small children are distinctly worrying. Kids on the ground - fine. Being held? Not so much. Think it might be related to a very irritating and usually carried chihuahua.

Hmm. Interesting🧐

Zippetydoodahzippetyay · 16/11/2019 23:35

I believe it's a real thing. I once dog sat for a friends dog. If a black person or animal cane on Tv the dog would go beserk. Friends were absolutely not racist so it must have been a visual thing for the dog.

I recently came downstairs wearing a charcoal sheet mask on my face and my normally very affectionate and placid Labrador growled at me and wouldn't let me pat her without a lot of coaxing.

@LostInTheColonies Oh yeah, mine doesn't like a person carrying another person. People with kids/shoulder rides/piggy backs etc. I swear she looks at them and then panics... 'THAT HUMAN'S GOT TWO HEADS!!!'

Bahhhhhumbug · 16/11/2019 23:44

Grin @ Mariana it's one hell of a get out clause isn't it...'was going to tackle ironing mountain but dog wouldn't let me put ironing board up' Grin

BitOfFun · 16/11/2019 23:55

I remember once bumping not a young man in the park with a dog the same breed as mine, and they were really friendly together and playing. I said "Aw, isn't it funny the way they seem to recognise their own kind?"

"Oh yes," he replied fondly, "they're like little doggy racists!"

It still makes me laugh, the way he made it sound so positive Grin.

BitOfFun · 16/11/2019 23:57

*into, not 'not'!

QuestionableMouse · 17/11/2019 00:04

I used to ride a cob that hated grey ponies with a passion. Used to pin his ears at them and get all huffy. Really embarrassing when you met one.

Serin · 17/11/2019 00:42

Our dog hates people with learning disabilities. It's really embarrassing as we live close to a special school so meet lots of older kids with LD when we are out on walks.
Our friends DS also has LD and the dog just sits growling at him.
He also detests people in hats, even me if I put one on. Confused

Macca84 · 17/11/2019 00:46

Your dog is a RACIST. Try explaining (in dog terms) the benefits of integration and liberal policies Grin

managedmis · 17/11/2019 00:56

Howling at the poultry KKK facade

BitOfFun · 17/11/2019 01:06

@Serin, I can sort of understand that: my younger daughter has SLD; she can move unpredictably and doesn't use the same facial expressions as neurotypical people. All the dogs I've had since she was born would make themselves scarce if they felt a situation 'brewing'. I imagine that for dogs not used to the individual, they might be nervous because they can't necessarily 'read' more unusual human behaviour.

Rainyrain · 17/11/2019 01:16

My mostly black dog doesn’t like golden labs/ golden doodles/ anything golden. No golden dog has ever done anything to him but he’s always hated them.
Other dogs don’t seem to mind him though despite his blackness. I wonder if it’s because he’s really small and has tan eyebrows and muzzle so His facial expressions are a bit easier to read.

AmazingAardvark · 17/11/2019 01:46

@BitOfFun I’m glad you found it funny! I made the same joke to a fellow dog walker with the same breed as mine. The silence was deafening Blush.
My dog is an actual bigot (though better now) - she’s been known to bark at elderly people, disabled people, and women in burkas. But give her a gang of surly teenagers in hoodies and she’s in love Hmm

BitOfFun · 17/11/2019 01:49

I've had the most amazing chats with groups of surly teens in the park thanks to my over-enthusiastic small spaniel Grin. Honestly, they just melt. If I were a teacher or learning mentor, I'd insist on taking my dog to work.

bumpysleighridejack · 17/11/2019 01:54

I had the opposite- a black dog who hated white dogs Grin

1forAll74 · 17/11/2019 01:57

People are allowed in my local pub, with well behaved dogs, and quite a few come in from time to time. But when one particular man comes in with his lovely black dog, ( forgot the breed now ) any other dogs that are in at the same time, just bark and snarl at this black dog. and yet the black dog is the nicest and cutest dog ever.

HouseworkAvoider10 · 17/11/2019 02:05

You think that's bad?

The dog belonging to a relative of mine doesn't like black people and barks like mad, when he sees a black person.
there are not that many black people living in that town.
It is very embarrassing.
